HTML, CSS, JS. Mobile gaming?
Software

How will the Palm Pre allow serious gaming development if HTML,CSS and JS are the main tools open to developers? Normally this would not have been an issue, but in the iPhone era this could be a low point rather than a high point?

I am just thinking out load, and am overall very impressed with what I have seen, but need more information before I get too excited.

The Palm Pre: Palm IS Back!

The Palm Pre has a 3.1 inch 320x480 pixel screen, 3MP camera (LED flash), USB 2.0, 8GB storage, Wi-Fi., GPS, stereo Bluetooth, vertical slider, accelerometer, TI's latest processor (laptop performance capability?), vertical slider (hooray!) and webOS. webOS is described as beomg compliant with html, css, ajax etc. to allow almost anyone to develop for it- now that is impressive!

All gestures can be done one-handed by swipes and appears similar, yet different to the iPhone style of navigation.

The interface is completely new, but Palm has cleverly kept some of the design traits of Palm OS such as the launcher interface. The management of icons and applications is 'awesome' and Palm has done well to bring something new to the touch screen interface party.

No mention of 3G yet though? More later...

OK, it has 3G and an amazing charging pod for wireless charging- not something you see every day! Sprint has exclusivity in the US at launch, and boy didn't Dan Hesse (Sprint CEO) go on and on and on about it...

Thought: the Pre does look somewhat like the lovechild from an old XDA and an HTC Touch. It's not ugly, but the two parts could be more original.

The Pre will be available in the first half of 2009 or to quote "as soon as possible".

More coming...

No mention of compatibility with Palm OS yet. Colligan claims "hundreds of thousands of developers on this paltform" very quickly. All applications are Javascript, CSS or HTML.

Apparently Palm has a "human centered design philosophy." Good lord...

And that's the end of the presentation.

Some details are still sketchy such as availability worldwide, although this is expected, but I must say that this OS would appear to be enough to keep Palm in the game. Love or hate Palm, this is different and on the face of it looks like a match for the iPhone and Android. GREAT NEWS!

The BIG Day for Palm

It’s the big day today for any one with a passing interest in the history of Palm. Those of you who still use Palm OS devices, seemingly still a very large number, will also be hoping for big things from Palm today and with a bit of luck and a fair wind, the excitement levels we saw when the T3 and Treo 650 were announced will once again make us ‘want’ a product from Palm.

After years of incremental development within the Windows Mobile, Symbian and BlackBerry industries, only the iPhone has landed with a bang and made the world stop for a brief second and look. Palm could well do a similar thing today, but we have to be realistic and not expect such a revolutionary change as we saw with the iPhone. Palm does not need to change the smartphone world to seriously boost sales and to once again become a credible player in the smartphone world- Palm has a loyal enough following, and enough sentiment flowing around, to win over many people with an operating system that looks ‘2009’ and hardware which can compete with the rest of the pack. Palm is Palm and that will be enough for many people.

Palm simply has to deliver today. The Treo 680 was a disappointment, the Centro was a disappointment and all of the Palm Windows Mobile devices have shown nothing that the competition has not been doing before. Recent history has brought a series of device with either a lack of innovation or poor build quality, and in some cases both.

In the current economic climate Palm has to do some special today. We all know that and this article is nothing new, but fingers crossed we are all excited and more optimistic about Palm’s future after the announcement…
