The Palm Pre has a 3.1 inch 320x480 pixel screen, 3MP camera (LED flash), USB 2.0, 8GB storage, Wi-Fi., GPS, stereo Bluetooth, vertical slider, accelerometer, TI's latest processor (laptop performance capability?), vertical slider (hooray!) and webOS. webOS is described as beomg compliant with html, css, ajax etc. to allow almost anyone to develop for it- now that is impressive!
All gestures can be done one-handed by swipes and appears similar, yet different to the iPhone style of navigation.
The interface is completely new, but Palm has cleverly kept some of the design traits of Palm OS such as the launcher interface. The management of icons and applications is 'awesome' and Palm has done well to bring something new to the touch screen interface party.
No mention of 3G yet though? More later...
OK, it has 3G and an amazing charging pod for wireless charging- not something you see every day! Sprint has exclusivity in the US at launch, and boy didn't Dan Hesse (Sprint CEO) go on and on and on about it...
Thought: the Pre does look somewhat like the lovechild from an old XDA and an HTC Touch. It's not ugly, but the two parts could be more original.
The Pre will be available in the first half of 2009 or to quote "as soon as possible".
More coming...
No mention of compatibility with Palm OS yet. Colligan claims "hundreds of thousands of developers on this paltform" very quickly. All applications are Javascript, CSS or HTML.
Apparently Palm has a "human centered design philosophy." Good lord...
And that's the end of the presentation.
Some details are still sketchy such as availability worldwide, although this is expected, but I must say that this OS would appear to be enough to keep Palm in the game. Love or hate Palm, this is different and on the face of it looks like a match for the iPhone and Android. GREAT NEWS!
