"In a world of watered-down, politically correct, pasteurised and homogenised, lifeless and flavourless news and comment, PDA247 is a relief, and for this reason I make a point of checking back every day." Howard Tomlinson CEO- Astraware

QOTD: How many accessories?
How many accessories have you got for your current device and which ones do you always buy when purchasing a new model? For me screen protectors and car chargers are a must as soon as I have a new device.

Palm emulation video

A couple of days ago we asked if you would consider leaving Palm OS for an emulator on another smartphone and we received some interesting answers-

"I would switch & use an emulator if the experience was fairly seamless. That's basically what happened with OS 5 on the Palm anyway."

"Yeah, it's the first time I think a move wouldn't hurt too much... But, my TH55 is still workin as I wish and I can still wait a year or two to see if Palm releases some new devices...

If I needed GPS and phone functionality, the i780 would certainly look more attractive than a Treo to me."

"Styletap for the iPhone would make me toss my personal palm OS devices and not look back."

If you are still undecided, take a look at this video demonstating StyleTap on a Samsung i780 (click the image to view the video). It has a quicker frame rate than it should, but I am still tinkering with the software. See what you think and have your say through the comments link.

More treo 800w, treo 680 "lives" and those DataViz chancers

More treo 800w, treo 680 "lives" and those DataViz chancers is another off the wall look at the Palm world from Murray at Palm-Mac- "Check out some more 800w shots originally, I think, on that BGR site and then hoot with laughter at the wacky japes those winmob pranksters play. You might well find it semi-funny although personally I could see the "joke" coming before it had even started which sort of spoiled it a bit for me anyway (no offence Charles)..or perhaps that is just my maternal protectiveness for the 800w kicking in again? I don't understand all the negative stuff around the possible 800w form factor...fact is the treo form factor just works so why tinker with it? As long as it is thinner that will do me.

No-one seems to mind how big a device is these days, length and width wise yet the moment something comes out that is not 6mm or less thick it gets hoots of derision. It can be a width fatty like the Moto Q9 or a tall boy like the Samsung i780 and nobody says nowt because they are thin. Odd that. Personally I would rather have a device that is say, 110x60x17 than something that is 116x62x12 as for me, it will sit better in the hand.

I headed on over to PDAMill, like a rubber necker at a crash site, to pick off some palm game freebies now that they have made them all available for nowt. See, there is something good about all that "palm is dead" stuff....lots of lurvely free games for me hearties...ooohhhh arrrrrrrrr Capt'n."

Nokia E90 vs Toshiba Portege G910 - Review

Nokia E90 vs Toshiba Portege G910 - Review is a good comparitive review at AAS- "It's tempting, very tempting to say that the Toshiba Portege G910 is a match for the Nokia E90, the raw specs certainly give it a run for its money. The stylus-based touchscreen and qwerty operation reminded me a lot of the old Psion 5 palmtops and fans of these will welcome the G910 with open arms. But ultimately the G910 doesn't quite live up to expectations - yet. The shackles of Windows Mobile, along with the inevitable glitches in the early Toshiba firmware, two(!) poorly implemented browsers and poor multimedia performance all give the E90 the prize - yet again.

However, in fairness the E90 has had over a year of firmware upgrades in order to mature - the G910 is just starting out. With proper support from Toshiba - perhaps a WinMob 6.1 upgrade in a few months time - it's distinctly possible (camera capabilities aside) that the G910 will close the gap."

Jabra BT3030

The Jabra BT3030 is such a cool accessory- expect a review (from Gavin) soon- "Bluetooth just got cool thanks to the BT3030. Not only does it look good, it sounds great. Finally a product that lets you listen to music from your mobile - without damaging your style!

BT3030 plays music from any enabled device such as mobile phone and Mp3 player. Play, pause, skip - remote control your music without touching your mobile.* Yep, that’s right - no wires!

No need for phone envy - keep it in your pocket! When a call comes in, your tune pauses and the call connects. A microphone in the dog tag picks your voice up, loud and clear. No hands, no missed calls.

The dog tag design keeps the wearing style simple. But if it doesn’t fit your wardrobe, use the optional clip. Your belt, your bag, your pants - you choose the look, you choose the style."

Spb Software Showcases Spb Online Shell at CeBIT Australia

Spb Online Shell is a convergence of online and media tools, targeted to helping mobile network operators expand their online services portfolios and meet high-end customization needs.

Sydney, May 21st, 2008 - Today at CeBIT Australia, Spb Software House, a leading mobile applications vendor, showcased Spb Online Shell - a practical on-device access point to online multimedia content and services. Spb Online Shell will help mobile network operators deliver improved content experiences to subscribers.

Spb Online Shell is an elegant content discovery solution that makes it possible to bring online radio, TV, video-on-demand, weather, gaming, music, and shopping directly to subscribers using Windows Mobile handsets. Set to reinvigorate user enthusiasm for mobile entertainment and data, Spb Online Shell is an easy to use and engaging single entry portal for online services and payments. It is designed to strictly adhere to, and enhance, a carrier's unique identity and brand.

Sebastian-J Schmidt, CEO, Spb Software, said: "The demand for mobile services is strong throughout the world. In Australia, we're now actively seeking partnerships with innovative mobile carriers, and believe that Spb Online Shell will resonate well here, since Australia is an early adopter of 3G and streaming content for mobile devices."

Spb Online Shell uses the engine of Spb Mobile Shell, an application that has been recognized by dozens of respected mobility experts around the world as the user interface improver, which reignites interest in Windows Mobile and changes the device experience completely.

"Not all services are created equal and success is not just about functionality. It ultimately is about the end user experience," said Vassili Philippov, COO, Spb Software. "We have seen a few million iPhones generate more web traffic than all the other web-enabled smartphones put together, so Spb understands that in any delivery, the 'how' is just as important as the 'what'.

To meet the growing demand for online mobile services and to adequately service its partners, Spb plans to set up a separate business entity.

AT&T's Laptop Mobile Broadband Subscribers Get Free Wi-Fi
Hardware AT&T extended free access to its Wi-Fi Home package of U.S. hotspots to monthly, unmetered subscribers to its LaptopConnect mobile broadband service with Windows installed. These customers, who pay $60 per month with a two-year commitment for up to 5 GB of combined upstream and downstream data each month, will receive no-cost access to about 17,000 domestic hotspots, comprising mostly McDonald's stores (9,500) and Starbucks outlets (7,000). A few airports run by AT&T are also included, as well as Barnes & Noble stores.

Previously, AT&T had extended free Wi-Fi to its DSL customers with 1.5 Mbps or faster connections, all its fiber-optic U-Verse subscribers, and business remote access users. AT&T has a higher tier of Wi-Fi, Premier, which includes another 53,000 international hotspots, full US airport roaming, and some hotels excluded from the Basic package. The Wi-Fi Home service is available only to AT&T customers; Premier is $20 per month for everyone else. The business case for AT&T is clear: moving data from its expensive 3G network, limited by both the constraints of its spectrum licenses and its cellular tower backhaul, to its much-cheaper-to-operate aggregated hotspot network provides faster and more consistent connections in many cases, especially indoors, while improving 3G service for everyone outside. This is especially true for customers who may routinely get 3G speeds while traveling, but have patchier or no 3G coverage where their office or home is located. AT&T is expanding its 3G mobile broadband network from 270 to all 350 of the top metropolitan markets in the US this year, as well as increasing upload speeds. This still leaves out quite a large area of the country, although only a percentage of the population. (AT&T operates Starbucks itself through a managed services provider, Wayport, that has a separate contract with McDonald's; Wayport resells McDonald's access to AT&T.) This announcement doesn't address smartphones. AT&T keeps accidentally slipping the kimono on its iPhone plans. More at Yahoo.

I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away
I'm a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away has been added to eReader. FANTASTIC BOOK! "After living in Britain for two decades, Bill Bryson recently moved back to the United States with his English wife and four children (he had read somewhere that nearly 3 million Americans believed they had been abducted by aliens--as he later put it, "it was clear my people needed me"). They were greeted by a new and improved America that boasts microwave pancakes, twenty-four-hour dental-floss hotlines, and the staunch conviction that ice is not a luxury item. Delivering the brilliant comic musings that are a Bryson hallmark, I'm a Stranger Here Myself recounts his sometimes disconcerting reunion with the land of his birth. The result is a book filled with hysterical scenes of one man's attempt to reacquaint himself with his own country, but it is also an extended if at times bemused love letter to the homeland he has returned to after twenty years away."
