"In a world of watered-down, politically correct, pasteurised and homogenised, lifeless and flavourless news and comment, PDA247 is a relief, and for this reason I make a point of checking back every day." Howard Tomlinson CEO- Astraware

Weekend Round-up: Storm, iPhone Apps etc. etc.

There is a rumour ciculating that a BlackBerry Storm update (OS 4.7.0.75) is on the cards, and that Vodafone has no intentions of promoting it direct to business (BES accounts) before 2009. It now looks as though Verizon is already offering the update.

There are now over 10,000 apps in the iTunes Application Store, of which 2319 are games- this is an impressive acheivement in such a short period of time. 148apps.com has created a tribute page which details every single application via micro icons- impressive stuff!

The news that Linux has been run on an iPhone could signal the way for Android to become available on the 'i' platform according to Gizmodo. This would be a move sure to annoy Apple, but you can't stop clever people doing this kind of stuff.

Stu Pann from Intel has claimed that Netbooks are only fine for an hour- “It turns out the bulk of the netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook,” Pann said. “We view the netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market,” he added. “If you’ve ever used a netbook and used a 10-inch screen size–it’s fine for an hour. It’s not something you’re going to use day in and day out.” Well, many of us will disagree on that point- as the Netbooks get better, the keyboards and screens become smarter and the success is evidence enough of the fact they can be used for long periods of time.

Garnet VM Beta 3 is now available for Nokia Internet Tablets and includes mainly bug fixes with some additions to the third party compatibility list.

In a week when the Treo 680 was end of lined and the business press went to town on Palm, Elevation Partners made an announcement that it "is very pleased with the progress Ed Colligan, Jon Rubinstein and the entire Palm team are making. The Company’s product pipeline, including a next generation operating system due out soon and a new device targeted for the first half of 2009, excite us enormously. Elevation supports Palm in taking the difficult but necessary steps required to migrate from legacy products. We have a very long-term investment horizon and have no plans to exit our investment in Palm.” In the UK, Football managers tend to get backing from the bosses just before they lose their jobs but this is good news in Palm's case and will hopefully give enough time to build that new OS.

All About Symbian are now on part 3 of their Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review. This is the phone that finally brings touchscreen capability to Symbian S60, and could herald the way for many to follow.

CNBC is reporting in a possible Windows Mobile powered Zune, which seems like a logical step considering the success of the iPhone. Obviously the OS would need a lot of changes, but the idea seems like one MS really should consider.

PDA247 reviewed the HTC Touch HD and LG Cookie this week, and next week you can look forward to two more reviews that are not smartphone based (for once).
