<X-WYSIWYGv1.0>Mobile start up AppLoop has closed down, citing both financial and legal reasons for its demise a short five months after its launch in June last year, reports TechCrunch. The San Francisco, California-based company’s main product was a self-service location-based advertising network that could serve up geo-aware ads to consumers from businesses. It also came up with a separate product in October, an App Generator that could convert any online publication with an RSS feed into an iPhone application. Co-founder Eric Kerr didn’t go into any specific detail with TechCrunch over what exactly went wrong, nor did they offer any explanation on their blog which now comes up blank, so its hard to call why the start-up foundered so soon after its launch. Is this a bad sign for mobile advertising, one of the few bright spots... More at mocoNews.
<X-WYSIWYGv1.0>
Tam Hanna from Tamoggemon Software has sent in his thoughts about the mobile industry in 2008.

1/ What was your favourite smartphone of 2008 and why?

Definitely the XPERIA X1. Even though its screen is not as big as it should be and the Keyvboard could be better, it yet is the best converged device on the market IMHO.

Although – I have to be honest that I was tempted to say MSI Wind U100 here. For me, the netbook is the biggest innovation in the PC space since the Osborne portable…

2/ What was your favourite mobile software title of the year?

When looking at Palm OS, I have to declare a tie between Resco Suite and my upcoming tIRC. Resco Suite because of the insane amount of things it can do…and tIRC because it keeps me connected to my friends.

For Symbian, its definitely Resco News.

3/ What device are you currently using and why?

Treo 680 even though it is falling apart. Love the device…even though it is already insanely instable due to the thousands of software tests I did. Will update to an XPERIA as soon as my carrier manages to provide one, though.

Furthermore, I tote around an N96 on Hutchison’s ultra-fast 3G network for news and Internet stuff…and sometimes an MSI Wind U100 and an Olympus e520.

4/ Was 2008 a good year for the mobile industry in your opinion?

Difficult to say. The Palm OS economy definitely suffered heavily…and the US recession threatens ad revenue for analysts. I expect to see a bit of a purge in the next few months….very big and very small agencies will be the ones who survive and thrive IMHO…

5/ What are you hoping for from the mobile world in 2009, and what development are you most looking forward to?

I personally think that 2009 will be an extremely interesting year. Almost every major player is currently undergoing a transformation of one sort or the other – there will be a lot of interesting things to see in the near future IMHO.

Forgive me the shameless plug: I have created an article series on this topic. A truly converged device that did everything and did it well has been something of a holy grail over these past years. A PDA, phone, & media device has been the ultimate to aim for. I've tried many ways of aiming at it but have always missed the mark. There's always something that feels compromised - whether it's screen size or portability or the limitations of a particular OS. Whichever way I tried to solve the conundrum failed. I finally figured out that I wanted a decent PDA and a go-anywhere-easily mobile phone - and not one device managed to do both.

So, the dream of convergence is over - and I for one don't mind in the least. This Christmas saw the arrival into my life of an iPod Touch 2G and it's advent has been nothing short of delightful. At last I've got a fully-fledged PDA back in my life without any bulk to speak of. It sits nicely alongside the Nokia 6120 Classic, my slim & efficient mobile phone. The Nokia is a smart-enough phone for my needs that is small enough to go anywhere unnoticed, even when I choose to take the iPod along too. And the latter is hardly a brick.

But what's really allowed me to set aside the fussing and fretting of trying to find some way of converging is the marvel that is the iPod Touch. With more and more apps appearing for it, its facility as a PDA just grows & grows, not to mention its abilities as a gaming and media device. Reading on it is a delight; writing on it is a breeze; racing on it is a blast.

So why not just get an iPhone? I'd be lying if I didn't say price has been the dominant negative reason - but two weeks in I really don't care about getting an iPhone - for me, the combo is king. And long may it reign.

The dream of convergence had turned into a nightmare. I'm so glad I've woken up. Richard.
The files themselves are considerably bigger than the average previous iTunes download and the quality is quite nice. Most importantly, however, there is now a “create MP3 version” selection when you right click on the song.

iTunes Plus is now standard and free for most music."

Now, you can choose from millions of iTunes Plus songs from all four major music labels and thousands of independents. With iTunes Plus, you get high-quality, 256-Kbps AAC encoding. All free of burn limits and digital rights management (DRM). So iTunes Plus music will play on iPod, Apple TV, all Mac and Windows computers, and many other digital music players. It’s also easy to upgrade your iTunes library to iTunes Plus. You don’t have to buy the song or album again. Just pay the 30¢ per song upgrade price. (Music video upgrades are 60¢ and entire albums can be upgraded for 30 percent of the album price.)

Hi there

I'm trying to set my Centro up as a backup for my iPhone. I have a PAYG O2 SIM but for the life of me can't get it to connect to the internet.

The SIM has applied some default settings in the Preferences/Network but this doesn't work, and I've tried a number of settings from around the internet, including those usually working ones found at www.filesavas.com

I'm beginning to tear what little hair I have left out, so would be grateful if anyone can shed any light on this for me.

With the default settings - or any other ones I've tried for that matter, what happens is (for example) I'll go to Blazer and as it tries to connect it says "Connecting to O2 Mobile Web GPRS" very briefly then says "Canceling"

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi guys! I have a really big problem. Im using a Loox T830 with a custom wm 6.1 rom. Last friday suddenly my pda"s speaker stopped working, but not fully. There were no system sounds, no new text message sound, I didn"t hear the music playing, etc. The only sound from the pda was the incoming call (ringtone) sound, but I didn"t hear the one who called me talking to me. And he didn"t hear me neither. But I heared everything with the headphones plugged in (didn"t try phone call), so I tought the problem will be the speaker. Anyway, I did a hard reset. After that I heard everything from the pda"s speaker normally, till today. Now the situation is the same, except one thing... The hard reset not fixed the problem again I can hear the ringtone, but nothing else, only with the headphones. I did 3 hard resets, but still not working I don"t know what to do, I think it"s not the speaker"s fault. And something interesting: I"ve installed a tv tuner card on my computer 2 weeks ago. Something is wrong with it"s software, cuz every time I start it, I have to re set the sound settins. And as far as I can rember, my T830 was being synced last time I changed my tv card"s settings. This happend today too, the pda was being synced, and I wanted to watch tv, so I changed the tv card"s settings. And I think there were no sounds on my device after that. Is this important? I mean maybe this is the problem? But why hard reset not working? Im lost without my pda working 100%. I flashed back the original wm5 rom, but still no sounds :redanger: If anyone have any idea, please help me! Thanks in advance!

WindowsMobile
<X-WYSIWYGv1.0>
Conduits Technologies, Inc., announced today the release of Pocket Player 4.0, an alternative media player for Windows Mobile 6 Pocket PC and Smartphone. Pocket Player aims to satisfy consumers who demand more from a dynamic media player on a mobile device, and recently won Best Audio at the 2008 Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Awards for its Pocket PC and Smartphone editions.

Pocket Player 4.0 introduces AAC and M4A playback and podcast subscriptions, as well as enhanced MP3 support and other improvements. Pocket Player 4.0 is fully compatible with all Windows Mobile 6.1, Windows Mobile 6, and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices.

AAC/M4A PLAYBACK

Pocket Player now fully supports AAC/M4A audio playback. AAC is a standardized audio format that allows for lower bitrates and smaller files, and is often "enclosed" in M4A files or stored in raw (ADTS) format. Users can listen to AAC content from various locations, whether the content is stored locally on the device (M4A or AAC/ADTS file), streamed over Universal Plug-and- Play (with the Pocket Player UPnP plugin), or available from a web feed or download link. Pocket Player 4.0 also reads all metadata from the AAC/M4A track, such as album artwork, and will add them to the Pocket Player media browser.

Pocket Player 4.0 supports all versions of AAC playback, including the common AAC-LC format, as well as HE-AAC v1 and HE-AAC v2 (also known as aacPlus and aacPlus v2). The latter is common with web radio streams, which offer high-quality audio at a low-bandwidth rate. While standard MP3 streams usually require 128 Kbps for high-quality playback of CD-quality audio, HE-AAC v2 streams only require 24 Kbps to achieve similiar quality. The media browser features a "Web Guide" screen that loads a directory of Internet radio stations, including those streaming AAC content.

PODCASTS: DOWNLOAD NOW!

When it was released in September 2006, Pocket Player 3.0 (and subsequent versions) featured integrated support for podcasts. Pocket Player will auto-detect any podcasts on the device and categorize them under the media browser's "Podcasts" screen. Using that interface, the user can add podcast feeds and stream a podcast episode directly to their device. However, streaming occurs in "real time," and requires an active Internet connection for the duration of the podcast. Previously, this requirement imposed a limitation to users wanting to listen to podcasts on-the-go, without an Internet connection.

Pocket Player 4.0 now introduces podcast subscriptions with automatic background downloading. By subscribing to a feed, Pocket Player will regularly check the feed for new podcast episodes, and seamlessly download them in the background of Pocket Player, or any other running program. As cellular data rates and plans may entail usage fees, and podcast episode files can be large (one-hour podcasts can run up to 60MB) by default, Pocket Player 4.0 will only download podcasts when connected to AC power and a desktop PC, where ActiveSync (or Windows Mobile Device Center on Windows Vista) can provide bridged networking.

The introduction of M4A support extends to podcasts as well. Many podcasts are delivered in M4A format (due to the bandwidth savings versus MP3, and the popularity of podcasts delivered via Apple iTunes), and Pocket Player 4.0 now supports those feeds. The "Web Guide" in the media browser also features a podcast directory, where popular podcasts can be subscribed to based on their topic.

ENHANCED MP3 SUPPORT

Pocket Player 4.0 now uses the MP3 DirectShow decoder provided by Microsoft on all Windows Mobile devices. This results in less CPU consumption and increased battery life over previous versions. In the process of switching to the new decoder, several potential playback problems with MP3 were found and fixed.
In addition to these features, all known bugs in previous versions of Pocket Player have been fixed. These fixes include myriad stability concerns, streaming issues, and several audio problems when using the crossfade feature in Pocket Player. Finally, AVRCP support on HTC devices has been updated and fixed.

AVAILABILITY

Pocket Player 4.0 for Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone is available as a free trial from http://www.conduits.com/products/player/ where the user can download and evaluate both products unabridged for 30 days. Thanks to Gavin.

<X-WYSIWYGv1.0>
KeepSync is a new service currently only available in beta for Windows Mobile and GPhone devices which competes well with MobileMe and Exchange. Expected for iPhone and Mac OSX soon.

"If you've ever wondered how to move files from device to device, or forgotten files at the office/house, or been pestered by a spouse about copying or converting photo files onto their laptop, then KeepSync is meant for you! Put simply, KeepSync means your data and your life are now in sync!

Simply install KeepSync on all the devices you wish to "keep in sync" and it will continually and automatically scan the folders you have chosen to monitor, looking for new or changed files. Such files are then automatically copied to the appropriate recipient devices and tagged with the senders information to make finding the file that much easier. KeepSync keeps track of which files have been copied and which ones are yet to copy, even when recipient devices are off-line, and copies them once the other device(s) is back on-line.

KeepSync is smart enough to ignore temporary and system files, and other data that you don't want copied. For example it won't copy all your existing files by default, this avoids your huge music collection from being beamed all around your network (of course we do have an option to allow for the syncing of existing files!). As you'll read below it is also highly customizable to meet exactly your use case."

This follows on from the news, in early November, that staff had been put on notice and a temporary transition period was being funded by Sony Ericsson. With that period over, with no alternative investor available and given the current economic climate the board had no choice but to shutter the company.

Approximately 200 people were still working for UIQ when the announcement was made.

MoreMobile
<X-WYSIWYGv1.0>
Product Name: Advent 4212
Price: £199
Supplied by: PC World
Reviewer: Shaun McGill

The Advent 4212 is one of a long line of Netbooks (sorry Psion!) which PC World is selling in the UK. PC World is still at this time using the generic term of Netbook to describe these items even though Psion is making claims against this, and so I will have to as well. If anyone can think of a better way to describe a Netbook, please add it to the comments link below…

The main reason I am looking at the Advent 4212 is because it was previously on sale for only £199 (price is currently £229, but it is worth haggling) and includes a full version of Windows XP. For a market which is rich in newcomers, the inclusion of Windows makes much more sense than following the Linux route in my opinion. Of course Linux is much more efficient, cheaper and still very easy to use, but you can’t get away from the fact that most people on this earth do not care what a computer is running; they just know what they know and want a familiar interface to use out of the box.

In the box

Anyway, the Advent comes in a professional looking box with a charger and internet cable included and that’s about it. There are no extras in the box, but I guess this leaves room to sell one of the slip cases, which are very highly priced, and other extras the user may require.

In use

The keyboard is thankfully large enough to cope with the largest of fingers and with enough travel to allow for quick typing over long periods of time. The symbols and punctuation are all placed as they should be and at no point did I have any learning curve to climb finding where the keys were that I required.
The screen is on the edge of being too small, but at 8.9” is fine for viewing complex web pages if the full screen option is used. It is clear indoors, but not the best in bright sunlight which is a shame for such a portable unit. To clarify, the screen and keyboard combination are well matched and create a practical solution for anyone wanting to undertake web surfing and word processing on the move. Considering the size of the unit, the various components are slotted in with care and every part of the housing is used to good effect.

I was surprised at how quick the system was considering the relatively low amounts of RAM and processor speed. It could be argued that all Windows machines are quick when you first power them on and that they tend to slow up over time- I do expect this to be a problem over time, but with standard use you should not feel that you are using a budget laptop every day.

The lack of a disc bay will be problematic to some, and this is a shame considering the 80GB of included memory. It would be nice to install extra software the traditional way through CD, but a separate hard drive or CD drive will be needed to do so. This should not be seen as a drawback though because the Advent keeps it size primarily through the lack of a drive bay. One point to remember is that a separate CD drive is only £15 from some stores and a DVDRW drive can be had for only £40 so the compromise is worth having in this instance.

Connectivity is adequate with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on board and I had no issues at all connecting to my home network for internet connection, and the same is true with my BlackBerry Bold for surfing when no Wi-Fi is available. Both of these activities do affect battery life which is not the best anyway, and is possibly the Achilles heel of the Advent.

Even though the battery was brand new, surfing the web with Wi-Fi enabled would drain the battery within an hour which was very disappointing indeed. Things have improved a little bit, but this is still a problem area for the 4212. I would guess that most people who want a device like this will be happy to have it plugged in to a hotel room socket or even at home, but for people who want to work on trains and in other remote places it could be an issue.

Specification

Intel Atom N270Processor - Energy efficient (1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 512MB cache)
Windows(R) XP Home
Memory & storage - 1GB Memory & 80GB HDD Portable
8.9" Widescreen Display & 1.2KG
Extras - Bluetooth connectivity & webcam
Stylish Black & Silver Design
Wireless Enabled
Built in speakers
178 mm Depth

Conclusion

The Advent 4212 is an all rounder that accomplishes everything it needs to with ease. It is quick, stable and capable of 95% of what a standard laptop could do on the road. For £200 it is a genuine bargain and is built sturdily enough to takes the knocks of mobile life. If the battery was stronger I would struggle to find any faults with it, but alas this one area drags down the entire experience somewhat. You can purchase extended batteries from £50 and there is even an external battery available for £80 which is rated at a huge 13200mAh.
On a value for money basis alone the Advent 4212 scores very highly and I would go as far as to say this is the best Netbook I have used to date. With some carefully purchased accessories it could easily replace a much more expensive laptop for a total outlay of under £300.

Build Quality- 8
Ease of use- 8
Battery- 6
Screen clarity- 8
Value for money- 9
Total score- 88%
