Treo 650 still going strong…
James posted the following in response to today’s question about upgrading and I felt it deserved a place on the front page-
My Treo 650 has been my exclusive mobile for almost exactly four years now, and, given that I’m unemployed at the moment, will probably stay with me for another six months. Cosmetically, it’s looking a little rough, but it works as good as new – very stable, even with some beefy third-party apps. I probably would have upgraded sooner, but there were a few reasons I didn’t:
1. Palm wasn’t putting out any devices that were significantly more compelling.
2. I wasn’t ready to drop all my investment into the Palm platform.
3. My wife, being fickle and having reception issues, ended up using all our upgrades over the past couple years moving up from a throw-away phone to a feature phone until finally insisting on getting a smartphone – a BB Curve.
I have found that I’m missing very little by not upgrading. I had a Windows Mobile phone provided by work and found that to be simply awful. The PIM apps are a pain to use, the browser is every bit as primitive as Blazer, and why is it that pre-installed Office document creation and management STILL doesn’t stack up to what was shipped on every Palm smartphone?
Having played IT manager for my wife’s Curve, I’m absolutely astounded by the popularity of BB devices and why RIM spent the last few years pounding Palm. I’m taking the Bold and Storm out of the equation because they’re so new and don’t represent the devices behind RIM’s success. BB’s interface is ugly and incomprehensible, and third-party development is the biggest joke in the smartphone world. BB’s success begins and ends with push e-mail. Take that away and all you have are doorstops and paperweights.
My Treo’s original battery still can handle two days of average use without a charge, the choice and capability of third-party applications are second only to the iPhone’s, and the PIM apps are comprehensive, flexible, easy to use and unmatched in the industry. I only get green-eyed over Wi-Fi and 3G. I really hope that the Pre stacks up, but I’ll get an iPhone 3G before I’d ever think of going to Sprint.
QOTW: Twits?
Here’s a question for the weekend. Do you use Twitter and if so, what do you think of it? Also, do you access it on your mobile device?
I am in two minds about it. On the one hand it is good to see what friends are up to, but on the other I can’t understand why people would care what I am doing. If you do want to know what I am doing my user name is ‘stmcgill’, but don’t expect anything remotely exciting to pop up on your Twitter alerts:)

The iPhone by da Vinci
Kevin Tong has produced a brilliant representation of the iPhone as is Leonardo da Vinci had invented it. Even better, you can now by a T-shirt with the design on. The limited edition posted has already sold out.
“Artist Kevin Tong captures the invention of daVinci, the imagination of H.G. Wells, and the brilliance of Jonathan Ive in this Exploded Phone drawing.
The 100-percent cotton American Apparel T-shirts (style 2001) are printed with soft-hand plastisol ink.”
Nokia E71 Part 2: Software and OS
May at Palm Discovery has continued her intensive look at the Nokia E71. It is a useful article to read if you want to understand more about this phone. On a side note, it will soon be available in red and black (the black one looks stunning).
“Before I continue, I just want to say that for those of us who are familiar with the Palm OS and Windows Mobile platform, the Nokia E71 runs on a totally different operating system, called Symbian OS version 3. As someone who has no previous knowledge or experience with the Symbian platform, needless to say, (and very similar to my experience with the N810’s Maemo platform), it took me a while to understand and get used to it. But, much like anyone who had to use something different, it was quite an experience, which turned out quite pleasant, thankfully.
Again, please note that these are my personal opinions and observations of the Symbian OS and the Nokia E71 smartphone. You may disagree with some of my opinions.
At first glance, based on the screenshots, it may be somewhat misleading to “assume” that the Symbian operating system is very much like the Palm OS or Windows Mobile, since it seems that the programs are aligned and laid out in a grid like pattern, somewhat similar to what you’d see in Palm or Windows Mobile. As you can see, the Symbian OS is almost a cross between Palm OS and Windows Mobile with a grid-like layout of programs and folders represented by icons plus the access of the selection/softkeys/left and right action keys. But that’s where the similarities end and the differences…”

QOTD: When is it not with you?
When is your mobile device not with you? Mine is usually with me all of the time, except when in the shower- that’s quite sad isn’t it?

The smartphone shelf life
I have often wondered how long smartphone owners keep their devices in comparison to normal mobile phone owners. I know many, many people who have owned a standard mobile phone for years and who are happy to carry around a battered and beaten device that barely works anymore.
I know few people who regularly keep their smartphones for more than a year. Some people I know change their phones every few months out of a need to try something new. I am obviously one of these people and have, on countless occasions, purchased a new smartphone and then quickly realised that it is not as good as my previous one.
What is it about smartphones that makes people want to change so often? Do they become so useful that we cannot live without them, and consequently we want an even better one? Why does it not matter that the next device only has a few improvements over the last one? Most importantly- why do some of us not understand that we will never, ever buy the perfect smartphone?
It will be interesting to see what some of you think who have a history of changing smartphones regularly (Gavin?:)) and if you have realised that it is ultimately a waste of money.
I am using a BlackBerry Curve 8310 and it does everything I want, but the Curve 8900 is nicer looking, has a better screen and a few other small enhancements. Will I upgrade? Probably…
i-mate Still Kicking
According to msmobiles, i-mate will be announcing “its brand new product – one which sees them break new grounds with a revolutionary mobile device that’s like nothing else.” at the Mobile World Congress.
It’s a big claim and will need some impressive backing up, but we may well be surprised. Make sure you keep up with the new coming from MWC- there should be some big announcement from another WM manufacturer (the big one:))
Fieldrunners 1.2 Released
Fieldrunners 1.2 has been released and includes the following changes. Surely one of the best iPhone games yet?
Flame tower. The flame tower is capable of incinerating multiple fieldrunners in a single fiery swoop.
Sell without penalty. A tower that is both purchased and sold while the game is paused will not incur a score or price penalty.
Faster load times. The time required to start a new game or resume a previously saved game has been significantally reduced.
Updated game icon. The game icon has been changed to reflect the color palette of the new map.
Improved lightning visuals. The lightning bolt discharged by the tesla tower now emits light and animates more realistically.
New map in v1.2: Drylands. With multiple paths snaking thru the dried-out canyon riverbed, it gives the fieldrunners ample chance to escape.
New Fieldrunner in v1.2: the P-47 Thunderbolt. These blazing fast planes tear through the sky over the fields at an incredible speed.
Autosave. The autosave feature saves your progress every round to protect you against crashes or freezes.
Telus Mike BlackBerry 8350i Launched
The BlackBerry Curve 8350i has been launched on Telus. This is a powerhouse of a smartphone in a small package and will no doubt succeed very easily.
Push-To-Talk, 3G Data, WiFi, and GPS are all included in a design so typically Curve that I for one would live in Canada just to get it:)

Nokia SMS Cleaner: solve the “Curse of Silence”
The “Curse of Silence” security threat was a big deal for Nokia users not so long ago, but you can now solve it for free by downloading the SMS Cleaner from Nokia.
“This application can clean a Nokia S60 3rd Edition (Initial or Feature Pack 1) based device, which may have received a so called “Curse of Silence” SMS message, and thereby restricted from receiving any new SMS messages.
After you have installed the application, it will ask for execution permission. During execution, application attempts to clean received Curse of Silence-messages from your phone. After execution the application will be deinstalled and phone will be restarted.”

Another Palm Pre Video
MobileDivide has published a new Palm Pre demonstration video, and we now know that the spacebar will work as the defacto camera button- sounds basic, but basic is good because that means quick. Let’s not forget the one-handed slide to unlock feature as well. The more we hear, the better it is sounding…
