Gartner Reveals Eight Mobile Technologies to Watch in 2009 and 2010

Gartner, Inc. has identified eight mobile technologies that will evolve significantly through 2010, impacting short-term mobile strategies and policies.

“All mobile strategies embed assumptions about technology evolution so it’s important to identify the technologies that will evolve quickly in the life span of each strategy,” said Nick Jones, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “The eight mobile technologies that we have pinpointed as ones to watch in 2009 and 2010 will have broad effects and, as such, are likely to pose issues to be addressed by short-term strategies and policies.”

A new iPhone on the way? Grasping at straws…

There has been talk of a new iPhone coming because of this- “Found in a property list inside the update image (USBDeviceConfiguration.plist), the suspected new iPhone is designated “iPhone2,1″ while the current iPhone is “iPhone1,2.”

That is a line from the new iPhone 2x update and because of this some think that this signals a possible new iPhone coming. It could also be a type or 2,1 designating the 2.2.1 update…

LeapFrog is launching a baby smartphone for young children which includes some educational aspects such as date learning, keypad phonics and some games. Your child can even send pretend text messages to a a puppy character on the device itself. At first I was quite uneasy at the thought of this, but when reading the detail, it seems like a harmless bit of fun. Available soon for under £20. More at Pocket-Lint.

New arrivals in the world’s most successful mobile phone range

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the Nokia 6700 classic, the Nokia 6303 classic and the Nokia 2700 classic, three devices that build on the formula that made Nokia the world leader in mobile phones. The new trio combines the functionality and user experience required in today’s hectic times, with premium designs and materials that make them the most beautiful, well built and competitively priced offerings available.

Leading the new collection is the Nokia 6700 classic, which continues the legacy of one of the company’s most successful products, the Nokia 6300. “The Nokia 6300 raised the bar in terms of design and premium materials when it arrived in 2006 and topped all sales records for a mid-range mobile phone. The Nokia 6700 moves that bar even higher with a beautiful, slim design and perfectly balanced practicality,” said Soren Petersen, Senior Vice President, Nokia. “Our new arrival shares the same ‘DNA’ as its predecessor and we believe that it will be one of our best selling devices in 2009,” continued Petersen.

The Nokia 6700 combines smooth surfaces, rich materials and precisely crafted parts with a full metal keymat which completes the premium finish. Improving on all areas of its forerunner, the Nokia 6700 comes with a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia Maps, and high speed data access meaning sharing images or video is faster and easier than ever. At an estimated retail price of EUR 235, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6700 addresses the original Nokia 6300 customer need and aspiration level perfectly.

At an estimated retail price of EUR 135, before taxes and subsidies, the Nokia 6303 classic is ideal for people that see the current value proposition of the Nokia 6300. The 3.2 megapixel camera comes to life on the large 2.2 inch screen, and with pre-loaded Nokia Maps, the Nokia 6303 combines a long list of features with excellent battery performance. Added to everything else, people can plug any music accessory into the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and have a fully fledged mobile music player able to carry thousands of their favorite tracks.

Rounding off the new arrivals is the Nokia 2700 classic which, at and estimated price of EUR 65 before taxes and subsidies, is one of Nokia’s most affordable, full featured handsets. Offering up to 2GB of storage via the memory card slot, the phone also has an integrated digital music player and a 2.0 megapixel camera, making it equally competent for imaging and music. “These features mean people can save, access and share files in hundreds of formats via Nokia’s online service, Share on Ovi, or a number of other websites. The rich features and simple interface mean that in many cases, the Nokia 2700 classic will provide its owner’s first Internet experience,” concluded Petersen. All three devices are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009.

Opera Mini out of beta for Android

Opera Mini has reached the final release of v4.2 with full support for Android. “Available starting Wednesday in the Android Market, Opera Mini 4.2 for Google Android now lets you upload and download files, save pages, and zoom in and out in response to a double tap.

You’ll also be able to enter URLs directly into the address bar–instead of having to go through the phone’s native input system–and, as with Opera Mini on other mobile platforms, launching a video from a Web page links up to your media player. Video playback had not been supported in Opera Mini 4.2 beta.” More at CNET.

Nokia N79 Review (first impressions)

The Nokia N79 is one of the latest in a long line of Nokia smartphones that offers smartphone functionality in a consumer centric candy bar design. It has all of the features smartphones users want and hides them all well in a design which suits a coffee bar better than an office.

791

In the box

Nokia N79 – White, Battery (BL-6F), 3 x Nokia Xpress-on Smart Covers, Data Cable (CA-101), 4GB microSDHC Memory Card (MU-41), Stereo Headset (HS-45), Audio Adapter (AD-54), Mains Charger (AC-5), Getting Started Guide, User Manuals, Software CD.

The above list looks quite comprehensive, but the omission of a TV-out cable is disappointing. TV-out is supported so it would make sense to include a cable, but I suspect Nokia is considering the N79 to be a budget model and thus needs to omit some extras.

The memory card is not too bad at 4GB, but they are so cheap these days that 8GB would have made more sense. Again I suspect this is to differentiate it from other models.

As per usual the headphones are not the best, but the inclusion of a remote attachment (and 3.5mm jack) does mean that you can use any headphones you like.

One interesting aspect of the N79 is the Xpress-on smart covers which bring back those heady days when everyone had to have a trendy cover on their mobile phone. Those days disappeared for a reason and it is a brave move by Nokia to bring this idea back. It may well work and we could start to see many phones using snap-on covers in the future (hope not!) if it’s plan works. The Xpress-on covers are unusual in that they have contacts embedded in them that automatically change the colour of your phones theme to match the colour of the cover that is attached. I will leave it up to you to decide if this is a good idea or not- you can guess where miserable old me stands on that one…

First Impressions

The N79 is a classy looking phone with ultra flush keys dominating the front below a perfectly proportioned screen. Without doubt the keys look great on this phone, but they are some of the worst I have used on any device. The centre navigation button is almost impossible to press accurately and I constantly found myself choosing the wrong menu options because it would slip up or down. The outer ring can be used in the classic up, down, left, right mode, but this is not easy because the keys are tightly spaced. At least Nokia has added a scrolling touch facility to this outer ring, which sadly is just as bad as the classic set up. I found it to be very inconsistent and as such neither method worked well for me.

The number keys and volume keys are also too flush to be of great use and this made the practical aspects of entering data on the N79 much slower than it need be.

The screen works well indoors and in sunlight, but OLED is in fashion for Nokia at this time and it is not present. Yet again, the screen technology feels like a compromise to fit it in the ‘budget’ category.

It’s going well so far! I have to say that the build quality is excellent though and this is a take everywhere phone which will easily survive trips in a handbag or briefcase. The snap-on covers are advantageous here because if you do scratch one, you can just replace it. The microSD slot and microUSB jack are positioned together under a flap on the slide and these work well; it’s nice to see them both easily accessible and well protected.

I will go into detail on each function of the N79 (camera, call quality etc.) in the next part, but it would be fair to say that my first impressions of the N79 are rather mixed…

SafeWallet Pro for S60 v1.1

SafeWallet Pro for S60 v1.1 has been released with some very useful changes-

S60 Client: Search your wallet! This is, without a doubt, the most popular feature request we had for the S60 client since the first version of SafeWallet Pro for S60 was released! We’ve received lots of requests from users asking to have a quick and easy-to-use feature to search for cards within their wallet on the S60 client too. The ability to easily search for cards is already available on the PC companion version and therefore the requests were referring to have this new addition with the S60 client.

S60 Client: Touch support One of the main additional improvements that we’ve been working on with this new update is optimizing and improving touch support navigation with SafeWallet as part of the welcome for new S60 devices with touch screens, such as the new Nokia 5800. We still have a few touch-related improvements planned on the pipe with upcoming builds of SafeWallet, but this version is already nicely optimized for use with new Nokia touch devices and users with such new devices can easily use SafeWallet on their device. More cool tricks are planned these days and we will introduce them shortly too now.

S60 Client: Symbian Signed This new version of SafeWallet is the first SafeWallet version with Symbian Signed certificate. From users’ point of view the main different is that now you won’t be asked if you trust the installation when installing SafeWallet since it is already signed and certified smile.gif from our side – this is main an official process that we wanted to complete to provide better assurance about the quality of the application both to our users and vendors and we are happy to have the Symbian Signed certification included!

PC Companion: Card Printing One of the nice new features available on the PC companion is the ability to easily print individual cards with your printer. Users that would like to copy a specific card details to a paper will now find the new printing option that will nicely output your card content using any configured printer.

PC Companion: More Wallet Import/Export options A lot of improvements and optimization was implemented with SafeWallet Import and Export utilities. With this new version users will find import options from new applications (including: DataVault, eWallet, FledxWallet, Handy Safe, Handy Safe Pro, MiniSafe and SplahID). In addition, several importing problems reported with wallets including special characters such as German Emulates or Hebrew/Arabic characters are now fixed. Ability to import SafeWallet exported XML files is now also available.

Apple’s newly awarded multi-touch patent might make Palm uneasy

Apple’s newly awarded multi-touch patent might make Palm uneasy is the latest in a number of articles discussing how the Apple patent may affect Palm.

o you remember the day the iPhone was unveiled during Steve Jobs’ famous keynote at MacWorld 2007? You might recall him wowing the world with multi-touch features and following it up by saying Apple is going to patent all of it. Two very short years later, Apple got its wish from the US Patent Office by being granted the patent for Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for determining commands by applying heuristics. The award for the patent couldn’t have come at a better time as Tim Cook has thrown down the gauntlet and announced that Apple will take on all challengers. Of course, it was no secret that the Palm Pre is the number one target since the upcoming device is to feature multi-touch support. Palm didn’t shy away from Apple’s hubris as it stated, “If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.” Of course, such an utterance is much easier to spill when certain patents haven’t yet been granted. It looks like it could be a slightly different ball game now…

Hackers steal details of 4.5 million in attack on Monster jobs site

The Times has published an extremely worrying article about a breach at monster.co.uk. The article is subject to a legal complaint at this time.  It’s not PDA releated, but worth noting.

The personal details of millions of job seekers have been stolen in the largest data theft in Britain, The Times has learnt.

Hackers gained access to confidential details provided by 4.5 million people to Monster.co.uk, the online recruitment site.

Names, passwords, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, birth dates, sex and ethnicity data as well as other “demographic information”, were all stolen, the company admitted yesterday.

It is the most extensive breach of confidential data since HM Revenue and Customs lost the details of 25 million child benefit recipients in 2007.

The victims are mainly professional staff who are seeking work in the economic downturn. Registrations at the site, which allows employers to browse thousands of CVs online, have soared as redundancies have risen.
