Palm Pre questions answered by Matt Crowley from Palm
Matt Crowley from Palm is answering questions this week on his Facebook page about the Palm Pre. I have no idea why Palm has chosen Facebook as the avenue for this, but it is working well. Here’s a sample of what to expect over the next week-
“Okay, let me get into some of these questions and comments. Some I can answer, some I can’t. Some you won’t like, some you will. I will do my best here. But whatever the case I do appreciate your input and it does matter.
microSD:
‘Design’ was the highest goal on the Palm Pre project. The phone has to look and function great in the hand and up against the face on a call. The decision to include or not include expandable storage is an easy one when design is the highest priority. The physical size of the device would have been compromised if we added another physical component to Pre. Just a millimeter can seriously impact the curvature of the design in a way that minimizes the design intent. We wanted to maintain a slick curved slider design without building out too much thickness. When you look at the two parts of the product and see how thin they really are, you may be amazed that we were able to fit everything in. And yes, all the stuff does fit.
The other advantage of embedded memory is that you have a large amount of storage out of the box for media and files. Including 8GBs of storage on the phone is a large amount of storage for many people, but not all. Yes, not all. We know that not everyone will be happy, but that is one of many decisions that needs to be made and the product goals help define these decisions.
The last point I will make on storage is to think about how you currently use remote storage. For example, I have my Google Calendar for family events and I have my corporate EAS Outlook calendar. These calendars are pulled down from remote storage (Internet) to my device. If my device is new, all I need to do is log into my account(s) and the content gets pulled to my device over the air. This is true for Contacts as well. We call this “Synergy”. This is something that is just straight out cool. Contacts are now pulled down from the web to my device. So if you update your Facebook contact information, and I am friends with you, your contact information will be updated on my Palm Pre address book. Think about that for a second. I no longer need to cable my device to my computer to make an update to my contacts. I get the updates over the air. Now my contact information is more up to date and if my device is replaced or new, I just enter my account information and I get it over the air to the device. This puts a whole new thought on external storage. The Internet is a BIG microSD card.
One Handed Operation:
We made sure that we designed the device and the user interface around one handed operation. A good example of this is the Back gesture. The Back gesture is a flick from right to left on either side of the Center button. You can be right handed or left handed (like me) to navigate back…”

Mobile World Congress: we will be there!
The Mobile World Congress will be happening between 16th-19th February and we have managed to secure two experts who will be feeding PDA-247 with news, photos and videos of the announcements and news releases.
Expect daily run downs of everything important that occurs and a few exclusives, which for obvious reasons we are not allowed to post at this time. It is incredibly frustrating having information that other sites do not and not be able to say a word!

Palm v Apple. Fight!
engadget has posted a brief round-up of the spat between Palm and Apple and it remains to be seen if this will have any traction. On the one hand, Apple may have a good case, but would it dare attack Palm and be seen as stomping on such an obvious competitor.
A Palm spokesperson has responded to the veiled threat from Apple with the following- “Palm has a long history of innovation that is reflected in our products and robust patent portfolio, and we have long been recognized for our fundamental patents in the mobile space. If faced with legal action, we are confident that we have the tools necessary to defend ourselves.” Thanks to Philippa.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic shipments reach 1 million milestone as Nokia marks successful UK sales start
Espoo – Nokia announced today that it has shipped the millionth Nokia 5800 XpressMusic device, a milestone that coincides with the successful sales start of the device in the UK. The latest in Nokia’s XpressMusic range, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is the company’s first mass market touch screen device.
Following its introduction in October 2008, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has seen successful sales starts in a number of markets, including Hong Kong and Moscow where the device sold out within hours of the sales start. Earlier today at the official sales start of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in the UK, more than 150 customers queued outside the Nokia Flagship Store on London’s Regent Street to be among the first to own the device.
“The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been received very positively and this milestone is just further proof that people all over the world want a device that is not only a great music experience, but also makes the most of touch screen technology,” said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia.
The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a complete music experience and features a number of music and entertainment essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks, support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry’s most powerful sound.
For the best screen resolution available on a mobile phone, the 3.2″ widescreen display brings photos, video clips and web content to life in vibrant color and true clarity. With a 16 by 9 aspect ratio and 30 frames-per-second playback and recording, the device is ideal for VGA quality video recording and playback. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook.

Nokia 5800 Hits the UK today / Nokia E75 Photos
The Nokia 5800 should hit UK stores today. Apparently it has already sold 500,000 units in limited markets in just 30 days, so there would appear to be an appetite for this particular phone. AAS are covering the launch today, and have nice photos up of people queuing in the rain…
Some high quality photos of the Nokia E75 have also surfaced, and it looks a bit like a Windows Mobile Standard device from HTC. This phone would be ideal for those who like the classic Nokia candybar form factor, but who need to send emails often.

New HTC Touch Cruise with Footprints Announed
HTC has announced a new Touch Cruise device with a special feature called Footprints- “The best part about HTC Footprints is that you can use them to find your way back to the hidden little café you visited last year, or the elm tree under which your loved one popped the big question. And if you want, you can simply flip through your collection and laugh about the times that helped create who you are today. HTC Footprints is like a journal of your life’s highlights, making them always within your reach.”
The overall specification is good with 512MB ROM, 256MB RAM, HSDPA and a 3.2MP camera being amoung the highlights. Sadly the screen is QVGA, but this should help with battery life.

QOTD: Handsfree Car Kits?
What do you think of in car handsfree phone kits? Some cars offer bluetooth connectivity with your phone to take calls. I’ve never used one and would be curious to know if they actually work or whether road noise drowns it out and gets in the way.
Laptops and smartphones
Is it just me or should smartphones be more capable of emulating the desktop/laptop environment than they are? You can pay £200 more for a smartphone than a well specified PC, yet it would still be capable of a lot less.
This thought came to me as I was trying to add news to PDA-247 and the hassle involved was a nightmare! With the old site, it would take about 10 minutes to add a simple article with an image, but with the new version things are slightly quicker. It is far from ideal though and I still need two browsers open to grab the image and URL and to then post it. It is fiddly in the extreme, and that is not simply because of the smaller keyboard and small screen.
A smartphone should be able to recognise images on screen and should be able to let you copy whatever you like to your internal memory, the browsing experience should act in a similar way to desktop browsing so that people who need to clip web content can do so with ease. I understand that this is not a mainstream activity, but I do not understand why mobile web browsers are still so cut down when compared to their desktop counterparts.
Things are starting to change in the mobile web browsing world, but only at a pace that is dictated by what the vast majority of users want. I can understand this because power browsing on a mobile is still somewhat of a novelty and I suspect that the vast majority of people are more than happy with the basic browsing experience currently offered.
From what we have seen of webOS so far, it does look like the same old limitations will apply, but just maybe there will be enough developer interest for browsing add-ons to be applied and for a real browsing experience to finally reach the smartphone.

BlackBerry Storm Update Spotted… yet again! Portrait keyboard included.
There’s yet another BlackBerry Storm update swimming around (v4.7.0.90). It is not official yet and details are at CrackBerry. We have to ask just how many updates does this phone need to become stable? There is the addition of a portrait keyboard in this OS though which is pleasing.
The phone itself is now quite good, but if I owned one I would be less than happy at what has been a dismal release period…

The Credit Crunch and Apple and Nokia
Apple is proving somewhat resistant to the credit crunch at this time, but that is probably a wrong assessment. It is indeed doing very well, but I suspect it could be doing a whole lot better without the global financial issues.
“Apple’s Tim Cook and Peter Oppenheimer acknowledged Wednesday that these are uncertain times to be in the retail consumer electronics business. But put aside any doubts about Apple’s ability to sustain the first wave of recession. Posting record revenue and profit during its fiscal first quarter, the company shattered analyst predictions on the strength of solid Mac sales and stronger-than-expected iPod sales.
Can it last? Tough to say, given that few can predict how quickly or strongly the economy might rebound in 2009. But Apple actually improved its financial standing during what many considered to be one of the worst holiday shopping periods in generations. And that’s likely to impress upon investors that Apple can hold its own even if the economy gets worse; they sent Apple’s stock up 9 percent in after-hours trading following the results.”
Nokia, on the other hand, is not fairly overly well as the following indicates-
- Nokia net sales of EUR 12.7 billion, down 19% year on year and up 3% sequentially (down 18% and up 1% at constant currency).
- Devices & Services net sales of EUR 8.1 billion, down 27% year on year and down 5% sequentially (down 25% and 8% at constant currency).
- Services and software net sales of EUR 158 million, up 37% sequentially.
- Estimated industry mobile device volumes of 305 million units, down 9% year on year and down 2% sequentially.
- Nokia mobile device volumes of 113.1 million units, down 15% year on year and down 4% sequentially.
- Nokia estimated mobile device market share of 37% in Q4 2008, down from 40% in Q4 2007 and down from 38% in Q3 2008. The full year 2008 estimated market share was 39%.
- Nokia mobile device ASP of EUR 71, down from EUR 72 in Q3 2008.
- Devices & Services gross margin of 33.8%, down from 36.5% in Q3 2008.
- NAVTEQ net sales of EUR 205 million, up 31% sequentially from EUR 156 million, and non-IFRS operating margin of 25.7% (18.5% in Q3 2008)
- Nokia Siemens Networks net sales of EUR 4.3 billion, down 5% year on year and up 24% sequentially (down 4% and up 23% at constant currency).
- Nokia Siemens Networks achieved substantially all of the EUR 2.0 billion of targeted annual cost synergies by the end of 2008.
- Operating cash flow was negative EUR 0.3 billion, including the one-time EUR 1.7 billion lump-sum cash payment made to Qualcomm as part of the previously announced license agreement. Excluding the Qualcomm payment, operating cash flow was EUR 1.4 billion.
- Total cash and other liquid assets of EUR 6.8 billion at the end of Q4 2008.
