Sprint Treo Pro Available

You can now order the Treo Pro direct from Sprint. treo central has added some details about the pricing- “Although not exactly confirmed, it looks as if the Treo Pro has 96MB RM and 512MB ROM. If true, Palm has doubled the available storage memory for programs, with a total of about 336MB.”

One word of advice before you buy a Treo Pro. Don’t buy a Treo Pro- it is dreadful!

The President wins his first fight: keeps BlackBerry

obamaMaybe now the Presidential BlackBerry story can be laid to rest, as it has been confirmed that President Obama will get to keep his beloved emailer. More at The New York Times. phoneArena is reporting that he will also be using a Selectra Edge when he needs to do Presidentuial stuff. He has had to change his email address though (potus@whitehouse.gov sounds too obvious, but why not give it a try?:)), but at least now we can all move on and he can do what he needs to…

It’s not all good news for RIM though. From Yahoo! Two top executives at Research in Motion, the Canadian maker of hugely popular Blackberry smartphones, face record fines for their roles in a stock option accounting controversy, local media reported Thursday.

RIM co-chief executive officers Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis are said to be in negotiations with the Ontario Securities Commission for wrongly backdating stock options for themselves and staff as far back as 1996, said the daily Globe and Mail.

They face penalties of up to 100 million dollars (79.2 million US). Neither party was immediately available for comment. As well, Balsilie would be forced to relinquish his board seat for a period of time, said the newspaper.

Neither RIM, nor the commission would comment to AFP.

In 2007, a probe by RIM’s board found that the company had backdated more than 40 percent of stock options granted to its employees since 1996, including 12 of 16 option grants made to Balsillie and Lazaridis for two million shares.

The two men repaid 1.6-million dollars US each to the company, the estimated value of their benefit, plus millions more to cover the company’s costs to investigate the matter and settle an investor class-action lawsuit…”

Apple rules out “iPhone nano,” not keen on Mac netbook  has been posted at Apple Insider. “Cook also destroyed the speculation around an “iPhone nano,” saying, “You know us, we’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are. That’s not why we’re here. We’ll let somebody do that, our goal is not to be the unit share leader in the phone industry. It is to build the best phone.”

The Top 5 iPhone Games

iPhone gaming has been the topic of many a conversation over the past few months and the variety of titles hitting iTunes every single day is somewhat bewildering. It is difficult to decide which ones are worth risking a couple of dollars for and which ones are complete puppies, so here is my quick run down of the best of the best-

simcity

5th place- SimCity

For ambition alone, SimCity deserves a place in anyone’s list. It is a monumental effort at bringing a complex game to the small screen and on the whole works very well.

The menu options are difficult to understand at first and feel slightly unnatural when you play the game initially. To be fair, it is not easy to bring a title like this to the iPhone, but the developer has done well. If you are prepared to take some time to understand the way it works, this could be the game with more longevity than any other on this platform.

ferrari

4th place- Ferrari GT Evolution

Racing games are hugely popular amongst developers and we now have a fair selection to choose from. Ferrari GT Evolution is, in my opinion, the best so far and does offer the player a fair amount of challenge and long term competition to keep them coming back for more.

The first play is ‘difficult’ and it can feel as though the game is programmed badly, but time tells and you will gradually find yourself improving which provides incentive to try again. You will be invited back to new challenges by a sweet email system and away you go onto the next, slightly more difficult, challenge.

Graphically it is superb and is one that will stay on my iPhone for a LONG time to come.

2079

3rd place- 2079

This is a remake of a classic game, and is one that appears to fit the iPhone platform and control mechanisms like a glove. Graphically it is quite basic, but it simply does not matter. The game play is hugely addictive and very intense! In fact, it can be too intense and is certainly not a game you pick up and play to relax- the adrenalin will start to pump within a minute of starting a game as you are quickly surrounded by alien ships trying to destroy you.

An incredibly simply basis for a game which has been implemented almost perfectly.

ishoot

2nd place- iShoot

Lots has been written about iShoot recently because the developer gave up his job due to its enormous and immediate success. All of that success is deserved because the game takes a classic title and builds on it to include explosions, impressive backgrounds and a real sense of where you are. It sounds like a childish description, but you will never play this game for less than 10 minutes. Watching a missile jump into the air and then eventually hit an enemy tank is just great fun!

Atomic Cannon was almost perfect on the iPhone- this one is even better.

wordpop

1st place- WordPop!

You probably guessed I was going to choose WordPop! as my favourite title on the iPhone. Despite all of the graphical brilliance and large development scales of some of the iPhone titles, WordPop! still wins out for sheer addictiveness and the simplistic way it drags you in and won’t let you go.

There are educational aspects to it to, and my son has learnt some new words by playing it. Words that ‘sound right’ can often be accepted and he will then look in the dictionary to see what they mean and I do the same sometimes.

It’s already great and priced very cheaply, and with more development expected in the future this could once again be as big a classic on the iPhone as it is on Palm OS and Windows Mobile.

Windows Mobile 6.5 coming soon?

65DigiTimes is reporting the possibility of Microsoft offering Windows Mobile 6.5 to developers in mid-2009. If the screenshots are anything to go by, competition in the smartphone market is going to reach boiling point. The iPhone is the iPhone, Palm is bringing us webOS, Android could be stunning when it comes out on new devices soon, Symbian is improving slowly but surely (needs to be more innovative though) and even BlackBerry is making moves towards the consumer population.

“Microsoft is expected to start delivering its Windows Mobile 6.5 OS (operating system) to handset makers in mid-2009 following the expected debut of the new mobile OS in the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, according to sources at Taiwan handset makers.

Although a number of Windows Mobile 6.5-based mobile devices are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2009, most makers are likely to launch their Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets in the fourth quarter for the year-end shopping season, the sources projected.”

Qualcomm Acquires Handheld Graphics and Multimedia Assets from AMD

The news that Qualcomm has purchased the handheld assets from AMD is hardly surprising considering HTC’s recent move away to new chips- “SAN DIEGO AND SUNNYVALE, Calif – January 20, 2009 – Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM) and AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced that Qualcomm has acquired certain graphics and multimedia technology assets, intellectual property and resources that were formerly the basis of AMD’s handheld business. The acquisition enhances Qualcomm’s multimedia capabilities, allowing Qualcomm to strengthen its leadership position in delivering more advanced products that redefine next-generation mobile user experiences.

“This acquisition of assets from AMD’s handheld business brings us strong multimedia technologies, including graphics cores that we have been licensing for several years,” said Steve Mollenkopf, executive vice president of Qualcomm and president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies. “Bringing this technology in-house creates even greater synergy as we seamlessly integrate the best-in-class multimedia performance AMD offers into our system-on-chip (SoC) products.”

“With the sale of these handheld technology assets and resources to Qualcomm, we are better able to focus on our core business and leverage our unique position as a leader in both x86 computing and high-end graphics,” said Robert J. Rivet, chief operations and administrative officer, chief financial officer of AMD. “We believe the talented AMD Handheld employees will be a great asset to Qualcomm.”

Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm has extended offers of employment to various design and development teams from AMD’s handheld business. The teams are developing technologies to enhance mobile devices in areas including 2D and 3D graphics, audio/video, display, and architecture.

The two companies signed and closed a binding agreement on January 19, 2009, having already received required regulatory approvals. Cash consideration from Qualcomm to AMD, as part of the transaction, is $65 million, subject to adjustments for employee-related expenses and a holdback for certain customary indemnification obligations. Both AMD and Qualcomm are committed to a seamless transfer of business assets, as well as a smooth transition for employees…”

The First Preview release of Pimlical for the Windows Desktop is now available for download

A preview release of Pimlical is now available to download (thanks to Tom for the link)- Forthcoming Pimlical for Windows (Palm OS® Edition) is intended to be the most advanced calendar application available for the platform and brings a wealth of functionality not present in most desktop calendar programs. Pimlical uses the same databases as the built-in applications and is therefore guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your existing desktop and conduit software and is compatible with all versions of the Palm OS from 3.5 to 5.9+.

“To use this release you must install Palm’s V-6.2 windows desktop software. You can download it from: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/windesk62.html (if that fails, try this link instead).

Pimlical will not work with the older V-4.x Palm Desktop. Palm’s desktop will also not work well on 64-bit Vista due to USB driver issues with hotsync, although apparently the Blue-Tooth drivers can be made to work. The V-6.2 desktop *WILL* work with older legacy devices even though Palm claims they won’t! Part of Pimlical’s install ensures that hotsync works just fine with those devices, so this will be useful for people with older devices concerned about upgrading to Vista because of problems running the older desktop software.

After you get the Palm desktop installed, you can download Pimlical by going to one of the payment pages below (you do not have to purchase Pimlical to download it, but the extra discount on the preview pricing will only be in effect through the end of 2008). Note that until you run the Pimlical install, you won’t see any data from Legacy Palm devices in the Palm Desktop.  Two pages from the manual that cover installation can be downloaded from here. Note that if you have Vista and UAC enabled, there’s an extra manual step that you will have to perform during the install process.

Also, for a short period (only guaranteed through January, 2009), Pimlical is just $19.95 (click here to purchase) rather than the usual $29.95, and those with the $5 discount coupons can purchase it for just $14.95 by going to this web page. On February 1, it is expected that it will go up to the preview price of $24.95. You can also download Pimlical from either of these two pages.

There is a Yahoo Group that you will find useful to join as general questions about the product, etc. will only be answered on that forum: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Pimlical/.”
