QOTD: One device for everything?

Today’s question comes from Rui. The other day I was reading your post and you were saying 98% of us must be using a converged device. That’s ok. But then I’m constantly reading about “converged users” talking about a 2nd device they have, iPod, cameras, a PSP, a 2nd phone, etc.. So, my question is: who really does use only one device for everything? Meaning… a smartphone and an iPod are two devices; having a 5mp smartphone, but also having a dedicated camera, that’s two devices, having a PSP for gaming it’s another device. So, who in all honesty uses just one device for everything? I believe we say that but in fact we have a lot more devices than the ordinary people out there. Am I wrong?

I think you know what I mean… we can never be satisfied with a single device for everything.

I certainly don’t use one device for everything. I always carry my canon point and click camera in my bag now in case I want a decent photo. I still use my iPhone camera, but only for the occasional twitpic. Having said that, one thing I love with my iPhone is having a large music library everywhere I go. It’s not my full collection but it’s enough.

I definitely don’t use one device from everything. My 30GB iPod has most of my music I like to have on hand. It sounds good and works well both on foot and in the car. I’ve just gone back to my Touch which works well enough for PIM and phone. I am looking to buy a new digital camera soon, one which is pocketable and takes good pictures on the go. It’s going to be a Sony of some sort because I’ve always got good results from Sony cameras. My laptop doesn’t always come with me… but a lot! It does a lot of things quite well. My car drives me places. My fridge keeps food from going off quickly and it keeps my drinks nice and cool. My washing machine washes our clothes… I’ll stop there! Right tool for the job, and sometimes the job is small and one tool will do a lot. Other times one requires it to do a better job, and as such buys the best tool for the job. It all depends on its importance methinks!

So… the “converged” it’s just a technical term, since in fact in practical terms (generally speaking) people continue to use a dedicated device for each activity, right?
    Isn’t this odd?

Converged is possible for mostly anything (SE-Walkman phones have outstanding audio quality, better than the ipods, that is) except for photography, where no device will be able to replace a camera in the near future.

I’m not converged because smartphone contracts are much too expensive for me! So I’m always carrying with me:
    - SE phone (phone, music, mobile internet)
    - Clié (PDA)
And the following devices when needed:
    - Minolta camera
    - and my newly acquired baby, the Acer Aspire One!

On the other hand, the AAO is my one and only PC that I own now. It is good for everything and when needed I’ll just purchase an external screen to link to it! –> It’s not just a companion, because it does all it needs to do!

I had it all figured out with everything nicely converged on my HTC Diamond…then got an iPod Touch and now use the Touch for pretty much everything except calls and texts.

I’m in transition, so my iPhone/T5 combo really doesn’t count, but I do use a 7.1MP digital camera–I want higher quality pictures. It remains to be seen if I can use just one but first I must wean myself completely from the T5 (if it’s possible :) ).
