‘Other’ vendors surge on smartphones, niches
FOR YEARS, THE TOP FIVE HANDSET VENDORS in the world took an ever-increasing slice of global market share. But something happened on their way to global hegemony.
Between 2007 and 2008, that trend reversed itself and the “other” category — all vendors outside the top five — began to grow again.
Between 2005 and 2007, the “other” group of vendors saw their aggregate global market share shrink from 24% to 16.2%, as the top five vendors grew their share to account for nearly 84% of global shipments, according to data from Strategy Analytics.
But between 2007 and 2008, the “others” rebounded by slightly more than 2%, according to the market analysis firm. IDC data differed slightly, showing only a 1% rebound, but even that is significant… More at RCR Wireless.

Rejected! 10 iPhone Apps That Didn’t Make Apple’s App Store
Rejected! 10 iPhone Apps That Didn’t Make Apple’s App Store is a new article at Yahoo! and gives an indication of what Apple is thinking when rejecting potential applications.
“Apple has irked more than a few iPhone app developers by rejecting their creations for inclusion in the App Store, sometimes for reasons that seem to have little sense. The company won’t reveal much about its mysterious and often seemingly-arbitrary process (representatives didn’t respond to multiple requests to comment on this story), but we had no problem tracking down developers whose apps had been snubbed.
So cue the 2 Live Crew, smart-phone fanatics: We’re delving into 11 iPhone apps banned in the U.S.A. and beyond.
1. Obama Trampoline
Swamiware’s Obama Trampoline game, rejected by Apple this month, lets you place one of 18 politicians onto a giant trampoline, then use his or her body to pop balloons floating across the screen. Barack Obama, John McCain, and other politicians from both parties were among the character choices.
“It’s cartoony,” says Swamiware President and CEO Patrick Alphonso, hoping to deflate any implications of disrespect. “It’s a game.”
Apple, of course, didn’t see the fun, and the game didn’t get in. Swamiware is now working on retooling Trampoline for another try, but the guesswork is leaving its team less than elated…”

QOTD: Do You Donate?
Have you ever donated to websites that you visit every day? It’s an interesting question for website owners as the economic issues start to take effect and different ways need to be found to keep up with the costs of bandwidth etc. I am often asked how much money PDA-247 makes, and of course that is not something that is normally discussed, but last year the total profit was just over $450. Things should improve slightly as the new platform brings in new visitors, but it is a lot of time for little payback. Don’t get me wrong- I choose to run the site and and am not having a moan, but it would be useful to know if you see the websites you visit as completely free resources and ones that should only be paid for only by advertising and commision from sales.

The smartphone Candy Store
The following comment was made by vboelema last week in response to all of the new phones announced at Mobile World Congress ’09- “I mentioned it in another post, but I just have to say it again – I’m about as giddy as a kid in a candy shop! Just look at all the choices, this could keep me busy for weeks on end trying to decide my next purchase. I really like the Nokia E55, with it’s fairly decent screen, flat, S60, a great battery life and all for a fair price!”
He has a point, and it would appear that all of the mobile manufacturers are now aiming smart rather than standard in their new development choices. The likes of Nokia and HTC live by innovation and will always come up with something new every other month, but the developments we have seen have not exactly been earth shattering. The big change we are seeing, however, is in the pricing of some of these new devices. Nokia is pushing the boundaries of smartphone pricing further than we have seen in the past, and it is likely that HTC and the others will start to catch up soon. As smartphones become the standard for mobile communications going forward, the pricing will have to fall in line to make them readily available to the masses.
The candy shop is filling up quickly with sweet looking smartphones to tempt those of us who want huge amounts of flexibility from our devices, but surely the devices we see as smartphones now will at some stage become no more than humble mobile phones in the grand scheme of mobile telecoms.
For the term ‘smartphone’ to continue, we should expect innovation to speed up, but knowing what form that innovation will take is a difficult task. At any point in time it is impossible to know what new features will come next, but the standards which have historically driven smartphone innovation have all been done to death already; cameras, GPS and gaming are already implemented with a quality level that standalone systems just about compete with so maybe we can only expect variations on a theme for a while to come.
Mobile TV is one area that has not been implemented well so far so we should expect some movements in that area, but what else can we expect going forward? Cloud type services will increase and so will the various methods we can use to interact with others wirelessly, but that is all software based. The upside is that we may be entering a period where the manufacturers spend time looking at quality rather than cheap innovations, but somehow I highly doubt it…
What new features do you think will be the next big things in the mobile world?
BlackBerry Internet Service 2.6 Details Arrive
RIM has put up a page detailing the features of BlackBerry Internet Service 2.6.
Display of password characters
BlackBerry smartphone users have the option to display password characters when configuring email addresses with the BlackBerry Internet Service. This feature makes it easier for BlackBerry smartphone users to integrate third-party email addresses, especially when using a BlackBerry smartphone with the SureType® input method. For more information, see KB17411.
Improved descriptive support and error messages
BlackBerry smartphone users that have integrated a third-party email account using Post Office Protocol (POP) receive a personal indentification number (PIN) message that includes instructions on how to leave email messages on the messaging server for successful delivery to the BlackBerry smartphone. For more information, see KB17404.
Option to change signatures from the BlackBerry smartphone
BlackBerry smartphone users that use Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) automatic login can change the signatures for email messages using the BlackBerry smartphone. For more information, see KB17414.
Improved language support
Dutch is now an available language for the BlackBerry Internet Service 2.6. For a list of all supported languages, see KB12859.
Gmail integration using IMAP

Elimination of sent email messages appearing as received email messages in the message list on the BlackBerry smartphone
One-way synchronization of read status, sent items, and deleted items
To use these improvements, BlackBerry smartphone users must remove and reintegrate their Gmail webmail accounts. For more information, see KB17407.

Danglet: Leash your iPhone
Danglet is an innovate new leash for the iPhone and iPod Touch which attaches itself using the dock connector port. Not convinced personally, but anything that is ‘i’ related tends to have a market at the moment.
Welcome to the first and only wrist and neck strap adapter for Apple’s iPod and iPhone. Danglet simply plugs into the dock connector port on the bottom of your iPod or iPhone, securely snapping into place, and provides a sturdy stainless steel loop through which any string or hook mounted wrist or neck strap can be attached. We provide basic wrist and neck straps with your Danglet. But, you can go ahead and use any strap you may already own or choose to buy. Danglet fits them all.
Danglet clips into the iPod or iPhone dock connector with two sturdy stainless steel hooking clips, one on each side. The internal stainless steel frame of the Danglet extends upward to provide an all-metal mounting hole for a clip, hook, or string mount strap. To mount a strap, just clip the Danglet into the bottom of the iPhone or iPod, then clip the strap of your choice into the Danglet’s mounting hole. To remove the Danglet, just firmly squeeze the side buttons to release the steel clips, then pull the Danglet from the dock connector port. Simple and easy.

TealOS Demo Video
If you dismissed the new TealOS product from TealPoint, I suggest you take a look at the video below. It is almost worth picking up an old Treo or Centro just to try it out- superb!
Turning Mobile Design on its Head: The Conduit
The Conduit is a mobile design by Tirshatha Hunter which has been made for a Korean company, SKY/Pantech and takes a radically different approach to anything we have seen before. It is amazing, but most likely a ‘long’ way from ever seeing the light of day.
It is in essence 3 seperate devices which grow to become a mini computer. Such a great idea in principle.
