QOTD: Retro PDAs?

QOTDHave you purchased an older PDA just to try it again and what were your experiences like with it? I have done this a few times and almost always been disappointed by how little I could do with it. It seemed a good idea at the time…

I bought a Palm E2 last year purely so that I had some hardware to run my old palm apps on. If I’m honest I’ve not really used it much, but I hate the idea of not being able to run one or two “just in case”. From time to time I fire up my Revo Plus, and I still love it but the lack of connectivity is always a disappointment.

I purchased a Zaurus some time back, and, other than a quick look, I haven’t used it – the lack of connectivity is the problem.

I have been tempted, last year bought an old Palm Zire but it was a waste of money. Technology moves so fast nowadays.

In the heady days when there was a new Palm or Sony device every 3 months, I would sell my current Palm to buy the next one.

Then I would wait a couple of years and buy it back again used off of eBay.

I have an Newton OMP and an Newton MP2100. Neither of these are again good because the connection software doesn’t work.

I have an original Palm Pilot, a Palm III and a Palm Vx – all for sentimental reasons.

When my company forced me on to a BlackBerry, I kept a Treo 680 for all my Palm apps (and all those ebooks I still haven’t read).

My wife says that I will have to pry her Zire 72 out of her cold hands, although she is running Tom Tom on a TX I gave her for Christmas.

A friend found me a Psion Series 5mx on eBay, as I’d been saying how I wanted to get my hands on one. I was feeling all nostalgic for Epoc 32.

Got a good deal on a complete, fully boxed kit too…

Bought a Psion 7 that had very little use. Had it upgraded to a Netbook. I can now use a GPRS PCMCIA card and a number of wifi cards. Fantastic keyboard and actually very useable screen. The Psion PIM works well in this larger form factor. Difficult to go back to the 5MX after using the Psion 7/Netbook. Best retro device I have bought.

I own a T2,a TX, and an IPAQ 2495. I use the IPAQ daily even though I have a smartphone. I purchased the T2 for next to nothing and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly it switched applications. Wouldn’t mind getting my hands on a T3, and a couple of Sony products. I think for work I prefer OS4 for it’s stability.
