Vodafone UK Customers to Tweet via SMS
Vodafone is now allowing its UK customers to tweet via SMS. The service is free at the moment, but it looks as though it will be a bundle option in the future. Press release below-
Vodafone UK has signed an agreement with Twitter allowing customers to send updates to and receive SMS notifications from the ever popular messaging network used to share and discover what’s happening – right now. Only Vodafone customers are able to use this service in the UK today.
As of today, Vodafone customers will be able to receive text messages from people they choose to follow via SMS on Twitter and send text messages to a short code (86444) for their “tweets”, @replies, or to follow someone on the go.
The SMS updates posted on Twitter will be free of charge for the first few weeks from launch – then they will be part of customers’ bundles. After the free period regular charges will apply to customers without bundles but all text message updates sent from Twitter will remain free of charge.
“We are delighted to be the only operator in the UK today to offer Twitter on SMS to our customers,” says Al Russell, Head of Vodafone Internet services at Vodafone UK. “Since we made social networks on the move both simple to use and great value, customers have flocked to using these services which have exploded in popularity.”
When receiving a text message from Twitter with a URL, customers will be able to click on the link and access the publicised webpage directly from their mobiles.
“Mobile texting extends the power of Twitter’s real-time network in a simple but significant way,” says Kevin Thau Director of Mobile Business Development at Twitter. “Twitter is the messaging network you didn’t know you needed until you experience it over SMS.”
The new service is easy to use on any mobile device and offers fast mobile access to one of the most popular social networks in the world. Twitter joins a long list of social networks available through Vodafone live! since December 08.
Ever since Vodafone UK included mobile internet in the price plan giving customers unlimited access to mobile internet, social networks have topped Vodafone’s popularity charts for the most visited sites on mobiles.

Booooo! Palm kills TealOS
TealPoint Software has added a post at Yahoo! Groups detailing why TealOS will cease to be sold from Monday 30th March. If you want a copy, best make your purchase now. It is hardly a surprising development, but TealPoint no doubt did well out of this short lived creation.
“Hi folks. I’m sorry to say that at Palm’s request, as of this upcoming Monday, March 30, we will no longer be selling or distributing TealOS.
We really appreciate the help and unprecedented enthusiasm so many of you have
shown for this product. It’s been a long time since we experienced this kind of
customer cooperation, and the program’s success came at a badly needed time. We
wish we could continue contributing to this great community.
For those of you who have already purchased the product, your copies will
continue to function, of course, but we encourage you to download the latest
beta copies to insure you have a stable version you are happy with and back it
up to a safe place, as you’ll no longer be able to download it after Monday.
We’ll continue through the weekend to try to get as many bug fixes and requested improvements in as we can before then.
Thanks, -tex.”

QOTD: Mobile email, text or IM?
Which is your most used method of communicating on your smartphone- mobile email, text or IM? For me, email is by far the most used.
Is the App Store better than webOS and the Palm Pre?
Earlier this week we asked you if you would be dropping your current smartphone for the Palm Pre or the new iPhone and the answers, as usual were varied. Here are some examples-
“I will get the pre, assuming I can get it unlocked. The next iPhone would need to have more storage or some amazing new feature for me to upgrade. I don’t want a smaller one!”
“I’m not interested in the Pre. Will upgrade to the new iPhone if it offers some compelling new features/specs.”
“I will wait for the first reviews before deciding, the memories of disappointments like the T5 and lifedrive are still too fresh. However as it seems that we will probably have an extended wait for the GSM version there should be plenty of data available to support that decision.
My gut feeling is that it will be good enough and I will get one, but if not the forthcoming HTC Touch Pro 2 looks a more exciting prospect than a revised iPhone, unless Apple are preparing something radically different for this summer.”
“Clearly Palm have got a lot of hearts and minds to win back – I think the Pre COULD this – but 1) we’ve got to see the darned thing and 2)it’s got to be effective, and be at least as good as other smartphones out there. It also needs to have drawn on knowledge of previous Palm smartphone failings (battery life, stability).”
…and so the answers continued.
Most of the talk surrounded the Pre, but the new iPhone is looming on the horizon like some big competitor killing beast which may deal the final blow to Palm. I am talking from a purely personal perspective here, but my excitement with the Pre has been tempered recently by the prospect of an updated iPhone. What happens if the new iPhone has a 5MP camera, HSDPA, updated PIM applications and maybe even a physical keyboard? The game changes completely and the App Store is the jewel in the crown of the iPhone.
The App Store is Apples main marketing tool for the iPhone and has ironically become more important that the phone itself. The worrying part about all of this is that it would not require many changes for people like me to seriously consider a new iPhone, and what happens if Apple produces something that competes more directly with the Pre? This is all hyperbole on my part, but the next 3 months will make or break Palm and while I want Palm to survive at least we have the reassurance of a much better smartphone than we have seen previously hitting the market. The question is- who will make it?

Twice released for multiple platforms
Herocraft is back with a new game called Twice for Symbian, Palm OS, iPhone and Windows Mobile. Looks pretty good to me.
An amazing logic game and memory training tool in one! Flip the face-down mosaic tiles and remember the pattern on the other side. When you find two similar patterns, you score points.
The smart logic game Twice combines the main principles of a classic game: an attractive appearance, popular and simple rules and a variety of game modes. Its rules are well known: you have to flip the face-down tiles in the puzzle one by one and remember the pattern on the other side. When you flip two identical tiles, you score points. To complete the level you have to find all of the pairs. Twice has three game modes so you can pick the game that suits your tastes – race against time, limited number of attempts or no limits at all. Just choose one of them and you will not be able to stop playing! The magical graphics and traditional Oriental music add a mysterious charm to this game.
Twice – a perfect realization of simplicity and genius.
Game features:
- Colourful Oriental style graphics
- Pleasant, relaxing music
- Three game modes for all tastes
- Excellent memory training tool
- Captivating gameplay

MobiMouse – Turn Your BlackBerry Into A Mouse!
MobiMouse for BlackBerry is either incredibly useful or incredibly pointless. I’m verging on the useful argument… “Turn your BlackBerry into a Wired or Wireless Mouse and Keyboard with MobiMouse!
MobiMouse supports USB, Bluetooth or WiFi.
Mobimouse allows you to control the Windows cursor with your BlackBerry trackball or the touchpad on your BlackBerry Storm.
Press the trackball for left click and the escape key for right click.
You can even adjust the Windows volume control using the volume keys on your BlackBerry or press the mute key on your BlackBerry to mute the sound.
Mobimouse supports full use of the BlackBerry keyboard. You can type on your Blackberry it will show up in whatever Windows application your are currently using.
MobiMouse is great for a Windows Media PC or for giving presentations with PowerPoint.
Don’t carry a mouse around with your notebook – use MobiMouse!”

WordPop! Global High Scores
WordPop! for iPhone now has a global high score facility which should add further to its addictive qualities. More details at the Smart Box Design Blog and Murray has posted details of his (pathetic:)) high score here.
“For the last month, the team has been working on Global High scores for WordPop for the iPhone and iPod Touch. A real challenge was how to lay out the screen. Wyatt was driving the effort and through several iterations with Jim and I, a series of screens were created and tested. The driving goal of the High Score screen was to allow players to easily and quickly compare their scores to other players. It was complicated because we have three different scores, Easy, Medium, and Hard. It was a lot of information to squeeze into one page. It was tempting to split this to separate screens. The feedback from our testers to Wyatt was very helpful and I am very pleased with the final vesion.
A feature we added that is not new, but not seen too often, is Today scores. Typically, All Time high scores are posted and compared. However, I wanted new and occasional player to see how they are doing in comparison to others. The Today High Score posts scores from the last 24 hours, Pacific Time. It has been great fun watching the Easy, Medium, and Hard lists fill up through out the day.”

Zune coming to Windows Mobile
It is looking increasingly likely that the Zune platform will squeeze its way into Windows Mobile 7 which will be good news for all WM fans. This is a clever move indeed for a variety of reasons; the Zune platform has hardly stopped the world turning so using it in a potential ‘millions of units’ market makes sense. Also, it is possibly the only was Microsoft can compete with Apple in the mobile entertainment stakes.
“Some more news on Zune for Windows Mobile has reached my inbox. We have recently heard Steve Ballmer talking about spreading the service to other platforms, with Windows Mobile certainly being one candidates.
The bad news is that Windows Mobile 6.5 will not in fact be getting the Zune service. The good news is that Zune is very much coming to Windows Mobile 7, and a pretty full implementation of it too (no mention of squirting though )
Unfortunately for the over the air part of the service Microsoft intends to have the operators very much involved, meaning when music tracks are downloaded via 3G we may end up paying twice as much as if the track was downloaded over WIFI. The Operators will also be involved in billing, with the ability of tracks to be charged directly to your phone bill rather than your credit card…” More at wmpoweruser.

BlackBerry to launch TV service?
NewTeeVee is reporting on the possibility of RIM offering a TV service direct to BlackBerry handhelds. It will consist of a monthly fee and the episodes can be downloaded via Wi-Fi in the background.
“We’ve heard from multiple sources that RIM is planning to announce a full-episode television service for BlackBerry users as early as next week at CTIA.
Here’s what we’ve heard so far:
It will be an unlimited monthly subscription service for a fee
Once a user orders a program, the content will be downloaded in the background over Wi-Fi
Multiple broadcast and cable networks have licensed content for the service
A spokesperson for RIM said it doesn’t comment on unannounced products or applications. However the timing seems right, considering the company is on the verge of launching BlackBerry App World, a competitor to iPhone and Android mobile application storefronts. While it might be a bit late to get into the content distribution game, RIM’s service has some advantages, including 19.5 percent of the world’s smartphone sales.”
