QOTD: What’s Bugging You?
Is there anything you would change about PDA-247? We asked the question before and fixed a few things, but it would be useful to know if there is anything left that bugs you…
They don’t make them like they used to
I have been using a Sony Ericsson K800i for the past week and it has been rock solid. The build quality is highly impressive and without doubt this phone will survive all of the daily knocks most phones receive. Compare that to the later Sony Ericsson phones which are also in the mid-range; the ones I have used have been poorly built and the break down rate has been high. I had a Sony Ericsson W960i which broke after 3 weeks, a friend of mine had one which suddenly stopped charging and another friend had one which stopped responding to key presses. Maybe it is down to the slider form factor, but it shouldn’t happen anyway.
Older Nokias are more reliable than new ones, or so I have been led to believe, and there seems to be a preference for form over reliability in 2009 more so than ever before. It should be true that if you pay more than £400 for a phone you get a superior build quality, but my Curve 8900 is an example of how that does not always happen.
Take a look at the images dotted around this article and you can see how some of the parts are just not up to any kind of normal treatment. I am always ‘very’ careful with my phones- because I upgrade a lot, eBay is a tool to keep costs down and so keeping phones as pristine as possible is a must for me. Despite this careful treatment with the Curve 8900 there have been numerous problems such as the trackball continually sticking. As you can see from the pictures the logo, battery cover and keyboards also feel like they have been knocked together by 2 teenagers in a shed. The device itself is brilliant, but the build quality leaves a lot to be desired…
More features in smaller spaces will of course lead to more problems, but the big bits are the ones being missed. It is not the same for all phones such as the Xperia X1 which seems to be quite solid, the iPhone and many of the HTC devices also seem to be well built. Give me reliability above all else and I am happy!

SPINA Thyr for Palm OS
There is not too much new Palm OS software released these days, but SPINA Thyr is one such beast and very specialised. If you have any clue what it is about, you probably need it…
“SPINA (Structure Parameter Inference Approach), a method to calculate constant structure parameters of endocrine feedback control systems from hormone levels obtained in vivo, has been applied in a prototypical implementation for the evaluation of the thyroid function. This application allows for calculating the thyroid’s maximum secretion capacity and the sum activity of the peripheral 5′-deiodinase from the levels of TSH, FT4 and FT3 determined only once.”

BuiltSMS could be a time saver for Symbian owners who have specific uses for their texts- “You can’t remember your account numbers, phone numbers of miscellaneous SMS services? Xtrakt – A 3D Game for Xperia
Xtrakt is an example of what can be done on a Windows Mobile device in the gaming genre. It is simply stunning and of course the clever people at XDA Developers have made it work on the HTC Touch HD as well as the Xperia.
“Now who was it that insisted that Xperia lacked a 3D chip? Thanks to itje for basing his latest Custom ROM on the leaked R3AA ROM and seperately providing CABs to some of the goodies available in the new ROM version, you can get your hands on ‘Xtrakt’ – a new 3D game by Sony Ericsson – right now! The game has really great graphics and runs quite smoothly on the device. Though it warns not to run any other applications when playing the game, it ran just fine with SPB Screenshot running besides it.
Best controlled with a stylus, you control the main character of the game on a future motorcycle destroying monsters. Doesn’t sound too appealing, i know, but the game is actually good! Better than many games that i’ve played on my iPhone and opens the door to better gaming on Windows Mobile. (True that an accelerometer would have been quite handy in handling the bike, but stylus/finger control of the bike sits well with the game).”

The iPhones 50% mobile web marketshare: not quite?
WAP Review has examined the recent AdMob Mobile Metrics Report and concluded the following- “Unfortunately it’s not true. The 50% number comes from the latest AdMob Mobile Metrics Report (PDF). Nowhere in that report does it say that the iPhone accounts for 50% of all U.S. mobile web traffic. The 50% number refers to the Apple device’s share of ad requests from smartphones. Smartphones as a group make up 33% of total U.S. ad requests so the iPhone’s true share of US mobile web traffic is about 17%. Actually it’s somewhat less than that as Ad Mob’s iPhone numbers include requests from iPhone applications as well as browsing. iPhone apps are a very impressive and game changing phenomenon but are irrelevant to mobile browsing market share.”
