CISCO: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast
Clemens has posted a very interesting article looking at the forecast for global mobile data traffic. It would appear that Europe may lead North America with regards to mobile data consumption and that Pacific Asia will of course lead everyone…
“The engineers from Cisco are doing a brilliant job in provision the infrastructure to today’s data consumption.
Now, Cisco’s researcher come into play and predict a strong groth of mobile data usage, as we can see today with iPhones (iPhoneOS), gPhones (Android) and soon pPhones (webOS).
The iPhone is said to produce an equivalent data conspumption of 30 2G/3G handsets alltogether. A notebook produces even 15 times more than the iPhone.
They not only present nice graphics to illustrate their arguments, this also indicates pretty much what carriers should be aware of in the near future – until 2013.
According to Cisco, mobile data usage is roughly by 125 TB (TeraBytes) per month, said to be strongly increasing to 2000 TB (2 ExaBytes ) until 2013…”

QOTD: iPhone or Pre?
Will you be dropping your current iPhone, or other smartphone model, for the Palm Pre or next iPhone (expected mid-year)?
We don’t like change…
When you buy a new car it can be a frustrating experience getting used to the way the indicators, buttons, keys and even the gears work. The same applies to almost every household appliance and most objects that we purchase to replace a tool that already does what the new one will. We accept the differences and learn to live with the parts that are less efficient than they were on the previous model, and in time we get used to what we have bought.
We then buy a smartphone that does things differently than the one before and all hell breaks loose. We often hate such small details as a punctuation symbol being on a different key, it may be a millisecond slower than the previous model and the countless other differences soon become ‘problems’ in the users mind. I suffer from this greatly and often believe that a new smartphone is not as good as the previous one, but have learnt that by putting the older one in a drawer and not using it things tend to improve and I start to see the benefits of the newer model.
It seems that change for the smartphone owner is much more difficult when moving devices than it is for any other product. I am presuming that it is because we use our devices so much that the small window on the phone becomes our window to the world. Everything has to be right and every single part of the phone needs to work as one or we feel that something is missing, and then we move on to yet another smartphone. Is it just me? I know it is not judging by the emails you lot send me…

iPhone Makes Up 50 Percent of Smartphone Web Traffic In U.S., Android Already 5 Percent
The iPhone now accounts for 50 percent of mobile Web traffic from smartphones in the U.S., according to an AdMob Mobile Metrics report released this morning. Over the past six months, the iPhone has taken share from Blackberry and Windows Mobile. In August 2008, the iPhone made up only 10 percent of mobile Web traffic from smartphones. During the same time, Blackberry’s share has gone from 32 percent to 21 percent (with the Curve and the Pearl coming in stronger than the Storm), while Windows Mobile has taken an even bigger hit, declining from 30 percent to 13 percent. Palm is also down to 7 percent from 19 percent six months ago.
The only other smartphone operating system that is showing gains in mobile Web usage is Android, which has captured a strong 5 percent share just three months after launch. And that is up from 3 percent in January. The gains shown by the iPhone and Android show what is possible when phones are built with fully capable browsers and support a rich array of Web apps… More at TechCrunch. Flight Path for BlackBerry Storm
Flight Path for the BlackBerry Storm is the nearest you will get to a BB flight sim at the moment, and it’s free- “Are you ready to put yourself in the pilot’s seat? The goal of the game is to fly your plane through the center of the rings coming at you. You get points for every ring you fly through, and the closer you get to the center of the ring, the more points you get. When you fly through a ring, you will be evaluated on a scale of Perfect, Good and Sloppy. Get a lot of Perfects or Goods in a row, and you will build up your score multiplier which will give you even more points! It’s not that easy though, because the game ends once you miss three rings. There’s also another catch. The rings keep getting smaller the longer you fly! To fly, hold the BlackBerry like a steering wheel and rotate left and right. The more you rotate, the faster your plane will turn. How high of a score can you get?”

Rhodes 1.0 is now available for developers to try out. It is unusual in that one application can be built using HTML at which point versions for all of the quoted platforms can be made. QOTD: What kills your battery?
What activity kills your battery more than any other? It would seem to be video watching for me on the BlackBerry, and anything at all on my Treo…
Mobile Email: should have left well alone…
Mobile email is incredibly popular these days, but has only been used by the masses over the past couple of years. It is a great tool to keep in touch with people at all times and one that I now cannot let go. At times I really do wish I had never started using it and it is not because of the standard reason of not being able to relax and leave communications for later. My issue is when it goes wrong.
I mentioned on Friday about my recent email troubles and sadly they seem to have got worse- despite many calls to my provider (which are never returned as promised) the problem continues and I am now receiving emails up to 3 days late on my BlackBerry. The sense of suddenly not having emails arrive ‘exactly’ when they should is irrationally worrying and I find myself checking my desktop at work and home for new emails much more than I have in the past. Hopefully the issues will be resolved soon, but the knowledge that the service is not all it should be ticks away in the back of my mind.
I ‘need’ my mobile email because it has become a way of life, but in my experience the least reliable email service has been BlackBerry’s so far. In 2 years of using pure MS Exchange with a Windows Mobile device I had only one problem which lasted for 2 days. In 5 months of BlackBerry ownership I have had 4 separate instances of email service issues which have lasted for days on end.
Mobile email has become more important than the choice of smartphone I use these days and so a change may soon be coming… again.
