SpaceTravel for BlackBerry Storm Released

SpaceTravel has been released for the BlackBerry Storm and from the graphics alone looks well worth the $2.99 asking price. “The object of this game is to fly your ufo around outer space without crashing into planets, moons and satellites.

This game is 100% accelerometer based. In order to steer your ufo you will need to tilt your phone. Tilt the phone to the left and your ufo will go to the left, tilt your phone to the right and you will go to the right.

There are multiple levels in this game and each level posses it’s own challenges.”

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 1 Software Walkthrough

audioThe iPhone Blog has produced an interesting iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 1 Software Walkthrough which details what has been added, and what has not been touched, by Apple.

“Just like January 2007 when Steve Jobs held up the first iPhone at Macworld and showed the world full screen multi-touch, and March 2008 when Jobs, along with Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall stood up at the Apple Town Hall and unveiled iPhone 2.0 and the App Store, this week Forstall and Greg Joswiack dropped iPhone 3.0 and… what exactly?

Let’s take a walk through the first beta release of the software and find out together. Of course, this being a beta, come this “summer” when the final release version is made available to consumers (free for iPhone users, US$9.95 for iPod touch users), things could be a tad different. This is the way things are now, with the first beautiful, buggy beta into for developers to test Last year there were 8 betas between the first and the final release. Who knows how many there will be this time, and what may change between now and then. So don’t take this as full feature review, just a preview.”

Symbian’s problem

pda247Symbian’s problem is a new article over at TamsS60 and I think some good points are raised within- “While the T68i is now hopelessly outdated, the situation outlined has not changed much from 2005. Most owners of Symbian devices still don’t know that their device runs Symbian, and Nokia/Samsung are not likely to put a Symbian splashscreen into their phone’s startup sequence like WM licensees are forced to.

As long as customers don’t understand that they own a smartphone, they will not purchase advanced applications. This does not motivate developers to create advanced applications, and furthermore does not promote platform loyalty through investment lock-in…”

AT&T source leaks new iPhone details

attBGR is reporting on a source in AT&T who has detailed some tantalising specs for the new iPhone. Personally I would like to see a keyboard- a clip-on one that sits at the bottom of the screen and automatically reduces the screen size accordingly. That would never happen, would it;)

New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh)
New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone)
U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.)
The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”
Nothing official is being confirmed, but they said that people should prep for an exciting time this summer.
AT&T is said to be working with Apple to create a unified product with an unparalleled experience across all their products and services.
Apple’s 3.0 software should tell us where the iPhone platform is going… uh, k?…

For Palm, Some Tough Acts to Follow

For Palm, Some Tough Acts to Follow is a new editorial at The New York Times and summarises the current situation with Palm, and some of its history, very well indeed.

“COMEBACK stories are irresistibly appealing, in business as well as in sports. But recovering from some strategic mistakes is awfully hard. A case in point is Palm’s failure to anticipate the threat that Apple posed to its core business.

Nearly two years since Apple introduced the iPhone, Palm has yet to release the Pre, the successor to its aging Treo. Much is riding on the Pre, which the company says will available before July 1: sales of Palm’s older smartphones have collapsed.

Last Thursday, Palm reported smartphone revenue for the quarter ending Feb. 28 declined to $77.5 million, from $171 million the preceding quarter. Its net loss of $94.7 million was its seventh consecutive quarterly loss.

“The Pre is a bet-the-company product,” says Ken Dulaney, an analyst at Gartner.

A Palm spokeswoman said it is not the Pre, but Pre’s new operating system, WebOS, that is the bet-the-company offering. Palm plans to introduce additional products for WebOS, but has not announced any specifics…” Thanks to Julie for the link.

Two new Palm Windows Mobile devices delayed?

pda247Brighthand is reporting on an article in the Commercial Times which suggests that two new Windows Mobile models from Palm may be delayed. This would make a lot of sense, given its current financial position, and the seeming reliance on the Pre and webOS to keep it aloat.

“The debuts of two of Palm’s smartphones have reportedly been pushed back from mid-year to the end of the year. Still, there’s a silver lining for this company: these will apparently be Windows Mobile models, not the Palm Pre.

The source of this information, a report in the Commercial Times, gives no description of these models, not even what operating system they will run. These un-named devices are being assembled by Compal, who says the delay is the result of poor performance with the current generation of Qualcomm processors. A new generation of chips from this company is expected out later this year…”

The smartphone style factor

uglyStyle in the standard mobile phone industry means everything. If a phone is ugly, it will not sell and that is a fact that has only been disproven a couple of times. The T-Mobile G1 is pretty ugly, but it is selling well and some would argue that the Sony Ericsson K800i was a ugly beast, but it still sold in huge numbers.

The smartphone market was different a couple of years ago and style was not high on the agenda of any manufacturer. As smartphones became more commonplace so did the need to smarten them up a bit and we now see very few smartphones which have no significant input from design teams. From the Xperia X1 to the Curve 8900, style is becoming more and more important as time passes and so here is my top 5 ugly and beautiful phones-

The ugly crowd-

1/ i-mate Ultimate 8502

2/ i-mate Ultimate 8150

3/ iCEPhone

4/ HTC Touch Cruise

5/ Nokia E90

The beautiful set-

1/ BlackBerry Curve 8900

2/ Nokia E71

3/ Toshiba TG01

4/ Xperia X1

5/ Psion Revo Plus

Somehow I suspect a few of you will disagree with the above lists…

The Pusher for BlackBerry

The Pusher for BlackBerry is a new game and one that I am already seriously addicted to. Great value at under $5, even if the graphics are a little 1988…

“Find your way to the exit by pushing obstacles, stepping on switches, going through warp zones, and more!

The Pusher will challenge your mind by trying to figure out how to simply get to the next level. The path to the next level may be visible, but there are many obstacles and puzzles that need to be solved before you can get there. This is a must have game for anyone who wants to sharpen their mind. There’s also a brand new, free level available for download every week to keep the challenges fresh

iPhone 3.0 vs Palm Pre

iphonepreiPhone 3.0 vs Palm Pre is a decent segmented article over at Smartphone Daily. The Pre wins in almost every category- “With the summer release of the iPhone 3.0 software set to coincide with the launch of Palm’s much-hyped Pre it looks like the battle between the two will define the smartphone industry in the second half of 2009 (especially if the long rumoured iPhone nano emerges around the same time). But does iPhone 3.0 add enough to bring into line with the most cutting edge smartphone OS? Cut and paste and MMS, after all, only bring it into line with the cheapest phones on the market. What of the rest?”
