Dell: Dude, What Did You Do With Your Cell Phone?
Dell has long been rumoured to be bringing new smartphones to the market, but now the word is that the carriers showed such a lack of interest that things have been put on hold. Strange because HP seems to get away with boring phones…
“So, uh, wasn’t Dell (DELL) supposed to be working on a cell phone?
Well, that was the scuttlebutt. But Dell has failed to show at recent mobile trade shows. Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros., asserts in a research note today that the company’s first attempt was basically rejected by the carriers as too, well, Dell-like.
He asserts that Dell showed a prototype to the carriers, but that they weren’t all that impressed. “From our conversation with supply chain and industry sources, it appears that it ultimately came down to lack of carrier interest and small subsidies, making it difficult for Dell to make a profit,” he write. “In our view, the last thing Dell needs is to enter another money losing business as it seeks to preserve its operating margins of 5%-6%.” (Which he notes compares to Hewlett-Packard at around 11%, and Apple and IBM at 15%.)
Wu says that he understands that Dell built prototypes using both Windows Mobile and Android, but that the carriers knocked the offerings for “lack of differentiation” versus current and coming products from HTC, Samsung, LG, Nokia, Motorola and others. He adds that the unveiling of the Palm Pre didn’t help, “generating interest from carriers as a viable competitor.” More at Barron’s.

Nokia to close MOSH
Nokia is to close MOSH in the near future, at least that is the speculation of the moment, in favour of Ovi. More at vnunet. “Mobile phone manufacturer Nokia is to close its interactive Mosh web site, which has been running since 2007 and has attracted over 137 million downloads.
“There is no official date for closing Mosh, but Nokia is expected to launch its Ovi Store in May, merging its software download store with Mosh and widget service WidSets,” said a report on Reuters. Nokia could not immediately provide comment.
AdvertisementMosh allows users to upload free mobile content like applications, games, videos, widgets and ringtones to their phone. It became the subject of controversy after attracting a large amount of porn, and for allowing users to download copyrighted music and games.”

Is the Pre enough to save Palm?
The Motley Fool has just published an article entitled A Sweaty Palm Might Let the Pre Slip which details the precarious path Palm is treading at the moment. Is the Pre enough to save Palm? I have my doubts at the moment mainly because of the suspected new iPhone coming in June- with no official launch date for the Pre, Palm probably needs to aim for April at the latest to gain some traction. Even if it does, I am not convinced that webOS (or any other new OS) is enough to drag Palm back from its current position…
If the Pre takes on the iPhone under O2 it could suffer in the UK, but I for one am still not convinced that Telefonica have it in the UK- more on that later…

The History of BlackBerry Part 3
The History of RIM & the BlackBerry Smartphone, Part 3: The Evolution Of Color is now available to read over at BerryReview and is the third part (obviously) of this informative and entertaining series of article.
“A few weeks back, I started with the History of RIM & the BlackBerry Smartphone, Part 1 and followed up with Part 2 introducing the BlackBerry Black & White days. That first part focused on the origins of the BlackBerry dating back to RIM’s first device until the release of the BlackBerry 850 & the original BES. The second part took us through the evolution from the original BlackBerry until 2002. Part 3 will be the journey RIM took into the color devices and prosumer/Individual market.
The biggest change that started in 2003 was color coming to RIM devices. This originally did not start as full TFT color displays but rather reflective color displays. Let me know if you find any corrections or more information. There will be one more final section since 2003-2005 turned out to have more historic events than I expected.”

472 Million to Receive Mobile TV by 2013
The number of people receiving Mobile TV will reach 472 million by 2013 according to an analysis by Cantab Wireless. Their report argues that subscriber growth is anticipated to be strongest in Asia at first, especially in Korea and Japan. From 2010 onwards, Europe and the USA are expected to catch up. Especially in Europe the shortage of radio spectrum before the analogue TV networks shutdown may delay the launch of mobile TV networks in some countries, most importantly in the UK.
Also, from 2012-2013 onwards, cellular operators may start providing mobile TV services via their upgraded LTE networks, which will offer greatly increased capacity. They will become serious competitors to broadcast TV systems. The current economic slowdown will have only a temporary effect on Mobile TV user numbers.
The report includes a review of the various mobile TV standards. However, as the author of the report, Dr Juha Korhonen, points out: “even more important than choosing the right technical standard is choosing the right business model”. It is not yet obvious on how to make money in the Mobile TV business. Various business models have been tried and tested around the world, some successfully and some less so… More at cellular-news.

YouTube Optimised for Symbian and Windows Mobile
![]()
An upgraded YouTube application has been released which is optimised for Symbian and Windows Mobile devices- “Our goal is to provide you with a great YouTube experience wherever you want to watch videos — whether it’s on your computer, on your television, or on your mobile phone. While YouTube has been available for many mobile phones for over a year, today we’re taking a big step forward with a new version of our mobile YouTube application. It’s optimized for most Windows Mobile and Symbian Series 60 devices (a list of supported Nokia S60 devices is available here). In addition to providing YouTube on more phones than ever before, it’s also much faster — up to 90% faster starting up, searching, and video loading — and gives you better video quality that’s automatically optimized to your WiFi or 3G network.
To download the app, visit http://m.youtube.com from your device. More cool features and app improvements are on the way, and the app will alert you as updates become available and allow you to upgrade with a single click.
The Loox N560 Returns
From Clove- “It is not everyday that we hear good news. However if you are a fan of the Classic PDA, today is one of those days.
We have been able to obtain a limited quantity of the Fujitsu Loox N560. The what? If you haven’t heard of this, the Fujitsu Loox N560 was perhaps the biggest selling classic PDA in recent years. 12 months or so ago, Fujitsu pulled out of the market taking the N560 with it.
Now there are very few classic PDA’s on the market, only those from HP, which are currently quite expensive! To be honest nothing, apart from perhaps the ASUS A696 has come close to this device in terms of specification.
The feature rich handheld includes Windows Mobile 5 operating system, 3.5” VGA display, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, 624MHz processor and SD memory card slot.
Available today, these UP spec units come complete with, docking station, two stylus pens, carrying case, USB sync cable, AC adapter with cable (country specific EU/UK) and documentation.
If this was not good enough in its own right, they are available at just £170 + VAT. So don’t delay, get yours today.”

WorldMate Live integration with Google Maps now included for BlackBerry
Google Maps integration has now been included with WorldMate Live in v2.7 for BlackBerry. Here’s the blog post- “Ever since we issued the newsletter and article last month about the free mapping functionality in WorldMate Live, we’ve been inundated by requests from users to integrate Google Maps as well as the other mapping and navigation apps we support (including BlackBerry Maps, AT&T Navigator, Mapquest Navigator and others). Apparently Google Maps for Mobile has some interesting advantages – it’s a free download, and has mapping coverage for places like Australia and New Zealand – that are not covered by the free BlackBerry Maps.
It wasn’t trivial, but we got it. Earlier today we released WorldMate Live 2.7 for BlackBerry – as always, a free application, which integrates into Google Maps. You can simply click “Map” on any item in an itinerary to view it on a map…”

Apple Is Too Expensive For This Economy (And That’s Why Microsoft Will Win)
Steve Ballmer, CEO at Microsoft, has taken a swipe at Apple during a recent media summit including saying “No one’s going to pay $500 more for a logo.” I have always had this view and always been proved wrong as Apple sales continue to rise, but is Microsoft value for money either?
“The deteriorating economy and cutback in consumer spending will hurt Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)—at least that’s the way MSFT CEO Steve Ballmer sees it. In a NYSE: MHP) Media Summit, Ballmer took aim at the iPod, iPhone and and Apple’s computers in general. “No one’s going to pay $500 more for a logo,” he said to audience gasps as he alluded to Apple’s various offerings.
Asked about the expectations for Windows mobile 6.5, Ballmer said pricing will make a big difference in leveling the playing field between Microsoft and its larger rivals in the smartphone space, Apple and BlackBerry. He estimates that smartphones will go from about 10 percent market penetration in the U.S. to 70-, 80 percent. “That’s true even in a bad economy.” Users want a range of price points, he says. “iPhone is a very expensive phone without a keyboard. Some people can’t afford [the device] and they can’t afford the data plan. It costs about $500 to make.”
“We want to power a low- to mid-range phone that can work with hardware developers,” Ballmer said. “Unless you assume that BlackBerry and iPhone will dominate the smartphone market—which I don’t— that gives us a huge opportunity. A $500 phone is not going to reach all Americans and people in emerging markets. The most popular phones in China and India cost $25 to build. We’re at $125, which isn’t close to those countries, but a lot cheaper than Apple. Plus, we can do touch-screeen cheaper, both high end and at the lower end, than Apple can.” More at mocoNews.
