QOTD: iPhone or Pre?

Will you be dropping your current iPhone, or other smartphone model, for the Palm Pre or next iPhone (expected mid-year)?

    Pre

  2. Peter says:

Will get a Pre almost certainly (unless others get it first and say its that bad…).
Decision to follow after that :)

  3. Philippa says:

I will get the pre, assuming I can get it unlocked. The next iPhone would need to have more storage or some amazing new feature for me to upgrade. I don’t want a smaller one!

  4. Matt King says:

One or the other. If the Pre is as good as it looks with Palm’s OS expertise and isn’t tied into a long stupid contract (PAYG is fine)

If it isn’t then I’ll give in an get a iPhone

  5. gavinfabl says:

Both on my radar, but would need more info on specs and what software / hardware options are available.

  6. lazyboy says:

I’m not interested in the Pre. Will upgrade to the new iPhone if it offers some compelling new features/specs.

I will wait for the first reviews before deciding, the memories of disappointments like the T5 and lifedrive are still too fresh. However as it seems that we will probably have an extended wait for the GSM version there should be plenty of data available to support that decision.

My gut feeling is that it will be good enough and I will get one, but if not the forthcoming HTC Touch Pro 2 looks a more exciting prospect than a revised iPhone, unless Apple are preparing something radically different for this summer.

  8. Joel says:

neither, I think Nokia E75 may be my next phone, very happy with the E71 at the moment (sorted my bad luck with bad a firmware flash)..

  9. Statto says:

My current iPhone contract doesn’t run out for another 14 months. In that time I expect we’ll see the Pre (eventually), and although I’m very interested, I certainly wouldn’t buy until I’ve got some real user experiences to base a move on.

Of course, within that period of time we’re almost certainly going to see the next gen iPhone, so there’ll be plenty out there to choose from, and I’ve got the time to choose.

Of course, if O2 provide an opportunity to move to the Pre from an iPhone early……:-)

I am in 5 minds about this one. I would like to see some user reviews on the following devices before I decide:
    Pre
    iPhone
    Nokia E55
    Nokia E75
    Acer DX900

    * The Pre – Looks promising. But I want a office suit, and we won’t know the reality of the device until someone starts using it and posting their thoughts!
    * iPhone – Looks like it’s catching up in certain basic areas (E.g. I use cut/paste A LOT. Is there an office suit yet?)
    * E55 is nice and thin with a great battery life and s60 works for me.
    * E75 – I read a review the other day and it got me interested. Slide out QWERTY plus a “normal” phone in one might suit me.
    * Acer DX900 – I like the dual SIM and high resolution, something I’m starting to wonder about with Nokia’s screens.

  11. Philippa says:

Wow – a lot of people here have been burned by Palm and are skeptical. I am surprised there isn’t more enthusiasm. I think the pre is the most exciting device I’ve seen since the first iPhone was revealed.

  12. Statto says:

Clearly Palm have got a lot of hearts and minds to win back – I think the Pre COULD this – but 1) we’ve got to see the darned thing and 2)it’s got to be effective, and be at least as good as other smartphones out there. It also needs to have drawn on knowledge of previous Palm smartphone failings (battery life, stability)

  13. JLP says:

Personally the ship sailed for me in regards to the Pre–we had to pick a new platform for our smartphones/PDA (hardware death issues) and went with iPhone. If the Pre had been an option at the time, we would have considered it. I’m not much into moving data from device to device, so I’m in on iPhone for the long haul. However, if the Pre ends up uber-cool, I might have to have a little toy on the side. :)

  14. Zelph says:

I will not be getting the first Pre that comes out. I never buy the first release of a new OS.

Remember Windows 1.0 anyone? Neither do I. But even Windows 3.0 was abysmal.

I will wait to see how the summer goes. Should be exciting with iPhone 3.0, more Android phones, WinPho 6.5 and of course the Pre.

  15. eccleshill says:

No intention or interest in the iPhone. For me it’s a toss-up between the Nokia N97 & the Pre – and it will also depend on availability in July when my contract is up. If the Pre is months away, it’ll probably be the N97

  16. Rick M. says:

I would get the Pre if it ever gets to another carrier other than Sprint. I would get the iPhone if it ever comes to Verizon.

  17. jah says:

Neither. I am waiting for the E90 replacement. I am not convinced by finger driven devices. I need a good physical keyboard.

  18. lazyboy says:

    Would that be a finger-driven physical keyboard? ;}

  19. James M. says:

I have a new job! So, the clock is ticking on my smartphone upgrade. The timing’s pretty funny, though. I got the job just as the preview info on iPhone 3.0 came out, and the improvements are making this a pretty easy choice. Almost all my favorite Palm OS apps are now on iPhone (or will be soon).
Palm’s pluck, determination, and innovation have been a real inspiration over the last few months. But then there’s Sprint. I totally understand WHY Sprint picked up the project, or, more specifically, why the other big providers didn’t: they all have their exclusive flagships. AT&T has iPhone, T-Mobile has the G1, and Verizon has the BB Storm. Palm probably had nowhere else to go.
My heart goes out to Palm, but Sprint means I can’t take my phone abroad. My Treo 650 is now over 4 years old, and I’ve earned an upgrade. The wait for a GSM provider to pick up the Pre in the US and for the Pre’s available base of third party apps just isn’t worth the wait. iPhone wins.
