Murray emailed me last week to explain that he was buying a BlackBerry Curve 8900. He had just purchased a Palm Treo Pro which he subsequently hated. This was after buying a Nokia E71 which he sort of liked, but it was not quite the ticket for his needs. Previous to this a BlackBerry Bold had come and gone and this was preceded by a procession of smartphone which were not quite right for him. I have been here and wasted an inordinate amount of money on smartphones which were no better, and in many cases worse, than my current model.
There will never be a perfect smartphone…
People who continually change smartphones are not just power users, they are searching for the perfect smartphone. I have been through this myself and it never did happen- every phone has had compromising functions for me, and they just get slightly better as the years pass by. There have been large leaps in usability of which the iPhone is an example, and maybe the Pre, but fundamentally they are rarely worth the price to change because 90% of what you can do on the new phone can be done on the previous one.
Maybe I am just having a bad day and am looking at this too pessimistically, but it would be interesting to know who of you has always upgraded and been convinced that the new smartphone is better than the last. I suspect the majority of you will have similar experiences to myself and Murray and often regret the new purchase…

Lately with every phone that comes out I have the same dilemma. Each has something nice to offer, but none have the complete package. I’m looking at the Nokia E63 due to it’s great price, I like Symbian S60 and great battery life. It bothers me that it only has 320×240 resolution, the slowest 3G connection and ereader doesn’t work on my E60.
No. There is no perfect phone… YET!
I am looking forward to see how the Palm Pre matches up – He he!
