The Palm Eos. Is this the second webOS smartphone?

eosengadget has just revealed the Palm Eos which may or may not be real (see today’s earlier article). Looking at past rumours this one feels more real than the others and the specifications match up, but it’s the looks that caught my eye. It makes the Pre look rather dull…

“Liked that blurry photo of a new Palm webOS phone we saw earlier? Well how about some specs, a name, and a better look at this thing? Enter the device above, apparently dubbed the Palm Eos (codenamed Castle… where have we seen that before?), which it seems will be the company’s proper follow-up to the Centro — a quadband GSM / HSDPA phone notably rocking the 850 / 1900 AT&T and Rogers-friendly frequencies. The phone will supposedly be an astounding 10.6mm thin, will measure just 55mm x 111mm (about 2.1 by 4.3-inches), weigh 100 grams, and will tout a 2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive display. Of course, the info we’ve got right now can’t be verified, and since there are a couple of minor question marks here (like barely rounded corners in the OS), you should take it all with a grain of salt… as usual. Needless to say, we’re working on getting more details (and some confirmation), so stay tuned!”

First Poll Results on Mobile Operating Systems

pollClemens has sent in details of the first poll results received by PUGcast to see which mobile platform people expect to survive the longest. The results are no surprise except for the webOS score which is quite low.

“Today, I would like to present first results, which are interesting enough to think about.

Thus, until now, two third of you believe iPhoneOS to be the most future safe mobile operating system. This underlines Apple success of the iPhone introduction about 2 years ago.

Followed by Windows Mobile, which even more than the half of PUGcast readers believe to be the one to run future devices with.

Sybian and Android are equal at about 40 % and it’s hard to argue which one will succeed: Both are open source and address a huge developper community.

Surprisingly, Palm’s new webOS (the successor of 15 years old PalmOS), is only of interest of about one fourth of the readers, which leaves room for interpretation. Do people not believe in the new mobile operating system or do they simply do not know enough about it at this stage to argue about it’s future?”

The Phones Show 80 Now Available

pda247The Phones Show 80 is now available to download or watch online. Here is the content listing- “Review of the Nokia E75, plus a Xenon demo, the top 10 of iPhone gaming and a brief interview with Rafe Blandford.”

Steve has also let the cat out of the bag re his review of the Nokie E75 over at AAS- “Not exactly a glowing review from me for the Nokia E75 in The Phones Show 80, I end up criticising everything from the small screen to the cluttered layout to the small battery to the bizarre ‘folder’ icons. Just being honest.” I got to play with one earlier this week and have to agree- there is a limit to how much you can fit into a small smartphone.

Mobile sales ‘in record decline’

Mobile sales ‘in record decline’ is a sobering article over at BBCi which details the 13% decline in mobile phone shipments, and the continuing rise of Apple.

“Mobile phone sales have plummeted by a record amount in the first quarter of 2009 as the global financial crisis sapped demand, a research firm said.

The number of phones shipped worldwide in the first three months of the year dropped by 13% to 245 million units from the same period last year.

Strategy Analytics said all of the five biggest mobile phone-makers had drops in sales.

But Apple’s iPhone defied the gloom to post a 123% annual gain in sales.

Strategy Analytics said the previous worst quarter for mobile phone sales was in the third quarter of 2001…”

Another webOS device coming this year?

pre2TechCrunch is claiming that a second webOS device may be coming from Palm this year. Details are of course very sketchy, but the source is claimed as being a good one. “And then, wham! A whole new rabbit hole to jump down. One of our better sources indicated to us that Palm is “very far along” on a second Pre-like device and currently has plans to put it on the market in the late part of 2009, possibly as early as the Fall.

This is too soon for a second generation device (Apple releases new generation iPhones yearly). and Palm won’t be expecting people to upgrade their Palm Pre to this new device just a few months after buying a Pre. It’s addressing a different part of the market.”

A burst tyre, no sleep and no copy paste!

brokenI have been on a business trip for the past 3 days which involved over 600 miles of driving and this was a perfect opportunity to test the iPhone out in a real world situation. I use a TomTom GO 930 for navigation which never lets me down and a Sony Ericsson K800i is connected to it for real-time traffic information. Sadly the iPhone is precluded from being used for this task at this time.

The rain was heavy and the roads were not easy to drive on, but everything was going well until I hit the M6 toll booths, and I mean ‘hit’! I managed to get in the wrong booth and decided to reverse out before other cars arrived- this resulted in me hitting the curb and blowing the back tyre, ripping the driver side wing mirror off and scraping the entire side of the car (still convinced the tyre burst first). We crawled to the side and awaited breakdown recovery. Eventually they arrived and put the spare tyre on- we were on the side of a motorway so could not do it ourselves (company rules). The spare tyre was only safe for up to 50 miles per hour and so we had to find the nearest tyre replacement centre that my company has an account with. The iPhone impressed with its ability to display the full tyre service web site and then present the relevant information so that we could get to it. An hour later I had a new tyre and onward we travelled.

A raft of emails had arrived and checking them was no problem on the iPhone- a few donations had come in as well and this resulted in a silly situation where I had to write down email addresses and respond as best I could with the iPhone (needed to send pre-saved drafts hence the hassle). Something that would have taken 10 minutes on a BlackBerry took over 40 minutes on the iPhone- hurry up with copy paste please!  Browsing was a joy and every other aspect of the phone was more than positive. After a meal I ended up staying awake until 2pm watching a film and playing games on it. The iPhone is so versatile on the entertainment front that it can be difficult to put it down at times.

The next day was spent discussing things with many people and this is where the iPhone failed completely. I had to write down everything on paper and then collate the information later into a report. This information would normally be input into a smartphone and then extrapolated (love that word!) later on. I can’t blame the iPhone completely because the lack of a hardware keyboard is hardly a surprise, but I don’t think I will ever get used to data input on it. Being able to send this information from the iPhone is not easy either, but NotesPark is a solution of sorts, albeit one that seems to remove all formatting when emailing a note.

Over the 3 days the iPhone proved to be a worthy assistant for the times when I needed information quickly or for pure entertainment, but when it comes to certain business activities it soon shows up its frailties. I will be keeping it, but may well be using the Curve 8900 as well, if it ever returns from repair, which is a complete if contrived solution to my needs.

One further point- I am also wondering if it is time to jailbreak my iPhone. I am happy with my carrier so it is not to unlock it as such, but there are some benefits to undertaking this task now. Firstly I would get a decent video camera which is a highly useful addition and perhaps even more importantly, iTypeFastR would be available to me. This application has been recommended to me as the best way yet to get around my data entry problems with the onscreen keyboard, and it may just be enough to get me out of jail, or in it if you see what I mean…

Palm Pre coming on June 7th?

shippingThe Pre release date seems to be slipping back all of the time. Well, you may think that if you read all of the unfounded release date forecasts every week. The latest date to be quoted, courtesy of Pre Central, is June 7th. That just happens to be my birthday, so if Palm could have one on my doorstep at 9:30am that morning as a birthday present that would be nice…:)

“This lines up quite well with the timeline we’re building in our head after today’s UPS Shipping rumor.  It also, as PreCentral.net forum member LurkMoar notes, matches up with the other rumor today about when the Palm Pre Protest Guy campaign is slated to finish.  In other words, we’re officially calling the May 17th rumor dead in the water and pinning our hopes and dreams on June 7th.

The idea of there being two release windows also rings true — there seems to be a pattern of Palm internally setting preliminary release dates and then hedging them just in case something happens to push it back.  The last thing Palm wants to do is let a release date slip and then get accused of having delays.  So, as tough as it is, we’re happy that Palm is keeping to the official line of “First Half of 2009,” we just hope that soon they’ll be confident enough to get a little more specific…”

ageAge of Empires III will soon be available on N-Gage and looks ‘OK’ from the screenshots. Hopefully it will have a few twists rather than just being a direct clone.

Palm Pre= $138. You won’t pay that though…

pre2iSuppli has come up with a build price for the Palm Pre of $138 which seems about right and does offer scope for decent profit margins for Palm. The theory is that Sprint will sell the unit for $200 after subsidy and this competes quite well with the competition. More at BusinessWeek.

“To say Palm has a lot riding on the Pre smartphone is an understatement. Amid stiff competition from Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM), Palm’s very survival may hinge on the success of the device, expected to reach Sprint Nextel (S) store shelves no later than June 30.

And while it’s hard to predict demand for the Pre, preliminary analysis suggests Palm (PALM) will make a healthy profit from the units it does sell. Judging from a preliminary estimate by market researcher iSuppli, the Pre will cost about $138 to build. That would amount to 46% of the $300 iSuppli expects Palm to charge Sprint for the device; Sprint is likely to sell the handset for $200, after a $100 subsidy, iSuppli speculates. Palm declined to comment on iSuppli’s analysis…”
