Keeping Things Running (part 2)
Last week I mentioned the things we are doing to keep PDA-247 running and over the weekend have started a new facility for anyone who donates to PDA-247. Thirty companies have been asked if they would like to be involved and even though the request was only sent out on Friday night, a series of offers have already come in.
The idea is that if you enjoy PDA-247 and donate $5 or more you will receive a series of offers and freebies in return. At the time of writing we have a selection of very good discount offers, but this will be increased over the next few days to include free stuff and further discounts on hardware and accessories from select distributors. Anyone who donates will be updated on new offers as soon as they are available. Other ideas are to offer unique content to donators and to do anything else we can to make your donation feel like a bargain, and not just a way to help the site. Full details of how to donate are here and a list of the current incentives is below-
A unique permanent 20% discount code which can be used in our BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Palm OS software stores. Applies to all software not already discounted.
Access to a support email service which is only available to donators. If you have a smartphone or PDA related problem which you cannot fix, we aim to reply within 24 hours and will always do our best to get the problem sorted for you. This service is available for 12 months following a donation.
25% discount on WebIS titles for Windows Mobile & BlackBerry platforms. A code will be emailed to you following a donation along with links to the available titles, which include Pocket Informant (WM & BB), Note2Self (WM), WebIS Toolbox (WM) and FlexMail4 (WM).
$5 discount on Creative Algorithms Palm OS titles (use 20% code above for Trip Boss and Gage Tech for a higher discount). A code will be emailed to you following a donation along with links to the available titles. Titles include the following with the discount percentage in brackets; Date Wheel (33%), Serving Sizer (50%), Quick Ohm (42%), OptiSize (42%) and Fraction Fit (50%).
30% discount on ‘any’ iambic title. From the classic Agendus through to Health & Diet Manager there is something for everyone, on every platform. A discount code will be emailed to you following donation.
–
25% discount off any Megasoft2000 title for Palm OS, Symbian and Windows Mobile. Titles include Billiards, MegaLauncher, PocketClock Pro and rssPicker.
A free copy of Escape for Palm OS. It is admittedly only $0.95 to buy from PDA-247, but free is free so why not take advantage if you use a Palm OS device? Simply send your HotSync ID to shaun (at) mailstm.co.uk after you donate to receive your free code.
“Addicting and yes a little mad. One to take for the road and annoyingly addictive.” Andrew.

Pending offers
40% off Calendar Touch, PocketWeather, PocketBreeze and PhoneWeaver from SBSH. We are currently discussing extra discounts for selected SBSH S60 and BlackBerry titles.
–
A monthly competition for donators which should include hardware, accessory and software prizes. The number of donators is currently low so the chances of winning are high:)

QOTD: eBook Pricing?
Do you think that eBooks are priced fairly? I would say that they are a little too high for my liking, particularly titles on dedicated readers.
99c
How do software developers for Windows Mobile, Symbian, BlackBerry and webOS compete with the iPhone 99c software setup which is currently dominating mobile software sales?
We have a strange situation at the moment where a software title that is priced at 99c in the iTunes App Store can be as much as $15 on another platform. It is obviously due to the numbers involved because there has never been a single repository for the other platforms and this has led to a spread of sources selling software. The fact that the makers of the other platforms have for years ignored the potential of the third party software market has not helped. I remember writing about this at least 4 years ago and posed the question of why companies like Palm and HP do not make more of an effort to push third party software in the literature which comes with a new device. At the time, I suspect that stability was the main reason and we were seeing lots of titles cause issues on lots of devices- why would a company want the expense of extra technical resource enquiries for products they did not even develop?
The world changed and these same companies are now desperate to entice their users into purchasing software because this is seen as the perfect way to show how much a particular smartphone can do. There are without doubt a huge number of people who would be willing to buy software at the right price once a good marketing campaign has made them aware of the possibilities, but the pricing will need to come down.
We are in a chicken and egg situation at the moment; not enough consumers are aware of the third party software markets and so reducing a Windows Mobile title to 99c, for example, will just kill the revenue flat. Also, why would someone do that when all of the other developers are still charging historically higher prices for similar software?
I think the App Stores will make a difference, but somehow suspect that Windows Mobile, Symbian, BlackBerry and webOS titles will be priced higher than similar iPhone titles for a while yet. If a platform does fly (webOS?) then that may change things significantly.

Snake Deluxe 2 for Palm OS Released
Snake Deluxe 2 for Palm OS has been released by CrazySoft, and with so few new games being released this is worth a look for the discounted $12.95.
Snake Deluxe 2 is simply the best ‘classic snake’ game on Palm OS!
It is based on the classic game we all loved enchased with astonishing graphics and gameplay. The game objective is almost the same. You try to eat fruits by controlling the snake¢s route. There are 32 different Rounds to complete, 4 different words and 4 different Bosses to kill.
Below the game¢s screen you will see all the meters. (Score, Time etc.) There you will see how many fruits are left for eating. Also keep an eye on the time that remains until you eat the next fruit. You can turn the snake by touching the screen or by the hard keys of your device (If it has any). There are some obstacles in every level, so be careful not to crash on them. There are three modes of play. Easy, Hard and Adventure. With the Adventure mode you can complete the levels, unlock the map and complete the story. With Easy and Hard you can choose one of the unlocked levels to play.
EXTRAS:
Heart: You get one more life
Meat: Much points & much snake size
Soda: Reduces the snake size
Clock: Gives plenty of time until the next fruit.
Present: Gives letters until you complete the word ¡Bonus¢*.
* Next to ¡Bonus¢ word you can see an ¡x1¢. It means that your points are multiplied x1. When you complete the ¡Bonus¢ word, x1 becomes x2 and so on.”

Nokia Gone With Music
Ewan at AAS has come up with a good reason as to why Nokia has only 23,000 Comes With Music subscribers in the UK- the Nokia 5310.Why oh why is the Nokia 5800 not promoted with Comes With Music? The 5310 is a brilliant phone, but the 5800 is all about entertainment and is a much better fit…
“Can someone, anyone, please come up with a valid business model that satisfies the handset manufacturer, the music industry, and the end user? And if not for 23,000 Nokia 5310 handsets, then for the estimated one million Nokia 5800 units that are being shipped per month? That device is the one that should be leading the Comes with Music charge, yet it’s only available with the music subscription service in a handful of territories (Italy, Australia, etc).”

Air Traffic Control for BlackBerry! Flight Control Mark 2?
Flight Control has been hugely popular in the iTunes App Store and seems to have been number 1 forever. It is a simple, yet brilliantly addictive game which will sap the hours from your life before you know it.
Air Traffic Control has just been released for the BlackBerry platform and looks quite similar with multiple modes of transport to land and 2 airports (something Flight Control does not have at this time). It is also on sale for only $4.99 until May 3rd which is a 50% saving and if it is anywhere near to the sweetness of Flight Control it is one to get! It is a BlackBerry Storm only game at the moment.
“Safely land all the planes on the runways by simply drawing the path using your finger. Includes 2 beautiful airports and many planes.”
The video below shows how like Flight Control it is, and that is definately a good thing.

13 year old downloads the billionth application / Lemonade Tycoon Released
Connor Mulcahey from Weston, CT was the lucky little chappie who downloaded the billionth title from the iTunes App Store. He is 13 years old and downloaded Bump, a contact swapping application, for free. He takes home a $10,000 iTunes® gift card, an iPod® touch, a Time Capsule® and a MacBook® Pro. It would be exciting to win it at any age, but he must be over the moon at the moment. Well done Connor! More at Apple.
On the subject of the App Store, EA has released Lemonade Tycoon for free (remember the classic Palm OS version from Jamdat?). This one is supported by advertising, but they are not too intrusive and could be the start of a new trend in advert loaded free gaming.
QOTD: What would your rather lose? Your smartphone or your wallet?
I parked my car yesterday to go to a meeting and left my wallet and iPhone on the roof. Fortunately I realised quite quickly and retrieved them, but then I thought about which of the two was more important. If I lost my wallet I would have to cancel credit cards etc. and would have lots of hassle getting money from the back for the next few weeks. However, the iPhone would be gone forever and the insurance hassle would take even longer.
So, what would your rather lose? Your smartphone or your wallet?
TetherBerry: The perfect application?
TetherBerry has proved to be quite popular this month in our software store despite having a price of $59.99. When you look closely at the features the reasons for the popularity become clear-
- Internet Anywhere: You can use TetherBerry anywhere you can make phone calls.
- Easy Setup: Download our software to your BlackBerry and another for your laptop… Then surf the web and email just like you would with any Internet connection.
- Fast Speeds: Download speeds that are impressive. Our users download at speeds up to 1,800 kbps.
- No Tethering Fees: TetherBerry uses your phone’s data plan and we do not charge tethering fees. (refer to our Terms of Service)
The current reviews also ‘all’ give it 5 stars out of 5 which is quite unusual. If the price is too high for you, use discount code ’247member’ to grab a 20% discount and take it down to $47.99.

Nokia 5800 accounts for 20% of the touchscreen market
Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo has estimated that the Nokia 5800 currently accounts for 20% of all touchscreen devices sold worldwide. It is a bit of a darkhorse this one, but consistent sales figures suggest that it is an extremely popular device. More at AAS. Thanks to Jah.
“During the address, Mr. Kallasvuo also highlighted the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music devices as a great success: “Consumer response has been well beyond expectations, and it has the potential to become our most successful device ever. We estimate that this smartphone alone accounts for around 20 per cent of all touch screen devices sold worldwide. It offers unique value for those who want to experience their music on the move, particularly when combined with our innovative Comes With Music service.”"
