1 million G1′s sold in the US

g1Deutsche Telekom has announced the sale of 1 million G1′s in the US since October 2008 which may sound like a small number when compared to the iPhone numbers. However, when you consider the size of T-Mobile in the US and the relative maturity of the unit, this is an impressive start.

“In addition, the advance costs in the first quarter of 2009 resulting from the 3G roll-out contributed to the decline in results. The sale of more than 1 million G1 handsets since the market launch in October 2008 alone, and a total of over 1.5 million 3G-capable handsets sold in the United States, clearly shows, however, that customers are demanding products and ser-vices based on these increased bandwidths and that the provision of these products and services is an important selling point in competition. T-Mobile USA will therefore increase the number of POPs covered by the 3G net-work this year from 107 million to 205 million.”

QOTD: One purpose?

What one particular purpose do you use your smartphone for above all others? I find this a hard one to answer, but email just pips it for me.

Optoma Pico Pocket Projector Review

pico1The idea of being able to project a video from a phone onto a wall has long been the subject of concept ideas and something that has not really been possible. Small projectors have been produced over the past few years which are mainly used in offices for presentations and slide sets, but they can be prohibitively expensive and this would explain why they have not branched out from the business communities.

Most smartphones can now carry Office documents and are more than capable of presenting slideshows and Word presentations. They have tended to be used for carrying this information rather than sharing it with others, but Pico has comes up with a solution that will enable you to go to a meeting with no bulky laptop or projector and to carry everything you need in your pockets.

The Pico Projector is tiny and will fit well alongside a smartphone in a suit jacket, but can it deliver on a seemingly impossible promise?

My first test was to view Word documents on a white wall and once the initial ‘look at that!’ moment was over I started to appreciate what was happening. There are two brightness settings of which the brightest is required for any surface which is not completely white, but you can get away with the lower setting on a standard office wall.

pico2The tripod adaptor ensures that it is stable, unlike the fiddly screw things you get on normal projectors, and setup is instantaneous. I have spent many a long meeting waiting for people to work out why the laptop is not connecting to the projector or why the projector cannot stay straight and it has now becoming a running joke. Turn the Pico Projector on, connect it to your phone and you are done- besides the focusing, there is little else you need to do to be up and running straight away.

Power is provided by an internal rechargeable battery which lasts for up to 1.5 hours, and you can also power it while watching a slideshow or movie. Sound can also be exported to a suitable system and if you try this another huge advantage of this accessory comes to life; movies.

I tested it with a Nokia N79 and with the lights turned down and sound out to a decent sound system, my kids were more than happy watching Finding Nemo. My 5 year old daughter spent most of the time walking up to the projection and wondering why there was no screen, but there is little I can do about that:) The quality of the displayed video is impressive and even though 60 inches is a bit of a stretch, a sharp image was produced at a much larger level than on my current TV.

To use the projector with an iPhone or iPod you will need to purchase a suitable cable for £30 + VAT and for a Nokia, a cable is available for £15 + VAT. These may seem steep, but the standard iPhone TV cable is roughly the same price and often does not work (it never did for me).
Conclusion

£250 sounds expensive for a one trick accessory, but it really is not. When you compare the potential of this device to standard projectors and the fact that you can use it anywhere in the home or office, all of a sudden it looks like very good value. It is well built and does exactly what it says it should. You may not need a tool such as this, but for people who require portable projection or for those who want a flexible entertainment experience at home, this is definitely one to consider carefully.

Available from Clove for £249 inc. VAT

This video was taken with a poor quality camera and the actual video quality is much better than you see here.

Windows Mobile crash. What happens next?

crashA new post at the Windows Mobile blog attempts to explain what happens after you see the dreaded ‘A problem has occured screen…”. It is a bit technical, but useful reading if you really want to know what goes on behind the scenes.

“I’m sure at one time or another you’ve all seen a certain happy window pop up on your phone. You know, the one that says a problem has occurred and asks if you’d be willing to tell Microsoft about it. If you haven’t seen it on your phone, well awesome, then maybe you’ve seen it on your desktop machine.

What you might not know is that this window is generated by Watson, which is a component of Windows Error Reporting (WER). Specifically, Watson is the client-side executable that is activated when an unhandled exception occurs on your phone. Watson is responsible for preparing an error report (stack details, system information, variable information, etc), notifying the user about the error (happy window), and with the users consent sending the file to Microsoft (via data or ActiveSync). Assuming the user chooses to send the report, these encrypted files are then added to a WER database where they can be reviewed by Microsoft technical support personnel and Microsoft developers…”

Apple does not like Netbooks; expect one soon?

Tim Cook from Apple described Netbooks as having “cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens, and just not a consumer experience… that we would put the Mac brand on, quite frankly.” on the Q2 2009 financial results call, so we should expect one quite soon:) More at The iPhone Blog:

“So where does that put all the rumors about an Apple netbook being all but imminent? Either once again shoved on the back burner like the iPhone nano, or — really imminent. (Apple has a history of trash talking product spaces and denying interest right up until they launch their own offering, like video on iPods, or, you know, smartphones).

Does this mean we’ll more likely see an Apple tablet? Mac OS X or iPhone OS X based? Opinions vary but Cook gave nothing away. Instead, to costumers who might want mobile web and email, he offered this advice:

They might want to look at an iPhone or iPod touch instead.”

Keeping Everything Running…

As the cost of hosting PDA-247 stays the same and advertising revenues drop a little, we are looking at ways to ensure that all of the costs of running the site are covered. It is a difficult time for many people and we do recognise that the larger sites, with corporate backing, have an advantage in that they have many more ways to generate revenue, but we need to keep 247’s head above the water and would appreciate any ideas our readers have.

One idea is to offer a set of incentives for donations. For example, a permanent 20% discount to our software stores will be given for any donation of $5 or above, but we would like to build a list of incentives that make the donation of financial value to you. If there is anything you would like added to the list, please add a comment to this article and if you feel that your daily read of 247 is worth a $5 donation now, we will of course ensure that you are apprised of any future offers for donators (the donation link is at the bottom of the right-hand column). Thanks for listening!

hKeyToss has announced a new mobile hotel booking service which is claimed to be the ‘most advanced’ available- “KeyToss, a fast-growing mobile service business, is introducing a new hotel reservation service targeted at travelers as well as other mobile websites.

The consumer service, available today at http://h.keytoss.com, enables mobile users to search for hotels and make reservations online using a rich set of tools not yet available on any other mobile website.  KeyToss customers will have access to the same exact hotel rooms offered by its partner, Hotels.com, a unit of Expedia, Inc.  That’s over 85,000 hotels worldwide.

KeyToss will also soon make this mobile hotel interface available to other mobile websites, initially through an affiliate program, and eventually through a private-label solution.

“There are a lot of mobile websites with travel content, but most of them don’t have a real business model beyond advertising,” said Samuel Kim, CEO. “We want to help them generate revenue.”

AT&T and Palm Pre Comparison Chart (not quite comparitive)

comparisonPre Central has unearthed an internal AT&T document which compares the features of the Pre to the iPhone. The comparison is biased to say the least, but it does tell us a few positive things about the Pre. AT&T is obviously very aware of it, if not concerned, and it also suggests that the Pre release date is quite near.

“Want more evidence that the Pre release is imminent?  How about AT&T sending a document around their internal network for employees to bone-up on some anti-Pre, pro-iPhone talking points …and then holding some in-store seminars for employees to make sure they get the message?

There are a few points here that are indisputable, but fans of the Pre might take umbrage at a few of the things here about the Pre (click the image above for the full size):

The Palm Pre “Touchscreen control gestures not intuitive” whereas the iPhone features “Patented Multi-Touch screen” and “Fast and responsive navigation.”  Hokay.
The iPhone sports a  “Thinner, lighter, bigger screen, metal and glass design” while the Pre is “Available in Black only; plastic casing.”
The Pre gets knocked for not being a GSM world phone and “Limited free Wi-Fi access” because they don’t get to use AT&T Hotpots.
The Pre has an “Unproven App Catalog app store.”
