UMPC Fever has posted some screenshots of iPhone OS 3.0 being tested, and these definately do look real. This is a translated page, but the English is quite good and it does highlight the extras expected in OS 3.0.

Didiom Continues to Expand Mobile MP3 Store by Adding 1,500 Record Labels
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 28, 2009 — Didiom, an award-winning mobile media service provider, today announced licensing agreements with finetunes-solutions and A-Train Entertainment. The agreements enable Didiom to make highly regarded catalogs of independent music available to millions of BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phone users. Didiom also has announced that, for the second year in a row, it has been honored with a Gold Award for Best Consumer Information from the Horizon Interactive Awards, a prestigious international competition that recognizes outstanding achievement among media producers.
Didiom’s free mobile service allows users to stream songs, playlists and podcasts from their home computer to their phone over the air, and also to buy new music from Didiom’s Mobile MP3 Store. Unlike any other service, Didiom gives users the power to bid on more than 1.5 million songs directly from their phone. When users find a song or album they like, they can buy it or name their own price to get deep discounts. By using a proprietary algorithm, Didiom accepts and rejects bids on the spot. As an additional incentive for users to discover new music, Didiom is implementing a cash bonus program that pays up to a 35% bonus toward music downloads. There are never any membership or service fees. Users pay only for the music they download through Didiom’s secure, credit card service.
“Didiom takes placeshifting and variable pricing to a whole new level and makes mobile music complete, interactive and affordable,” said Ran Assaf, Didiom’s founder and CEO. “A-Train and finetunes-solutions share our entrepreneurial spirit and passion for indie music, which now accounts for almost 40% of digital music sales in the US. We are delighted to add these world-class distributors to our burgeoning roster of music partners, and look forward to mobilizing their rich catalogs.”…

News round-up: 29th May 2009
The Palm Pre will support iTunes syncing out of the box. This is great news because it offers a stella way to manage videos and music, but of course protected content will not be supported. Songs can also be purchased over the air via the Amazon MP3 store. Palm has demonstrated some new features of the Pre at D7 and PIC has written up a summary of what was shown- there is mass storage, Twitter is heavily built in to the OS and the app catalogue will be available at launch, albeit with not too many titles.
Google has said that there will be 18 Android powered devices on the market in 2009. This is an impressive number, but there will be variences in how the OS will be installed. More at Android Community. The hugely popular Evernote is now available for BlackBerry Curve 83xx devices. This creates a huge new market for Evernote and it will surely be as successful on BlackBerry as it is everywhere else.
Sony Ericsson has launched the Satio which comes with a 12.1MP camera, 3.5″ widescreen, Symbian Foundation OS and many other consumer targetted features. A lite version of Hero of Sparta is now available in the App Store which is good news if you are concerned about the asking price. Don’t forget that Astraware’s Platypus has also been made lite this week.
In PDA-247 news, I have taken all of the comments made about the new design onboard and am discussing some tweaks that can be made to the site design which will hopefully make things easier to read. News will be light over the weekend due to a trip, but next week you can expect another Windows Mobile smartphone review (this new device is so cute!) and the usual news, banter and questions. If you have ideas for future content, please get in touch via shaun (at) mailstm.co.uk.

QOTD: Unusual uses

HTC Touch Pro2 Review: conclusion
Product Name: HTC Touch Pro2
Price: £504.85
Supplied by: Clove
Reviewer: Shaun McGill
Two days in and I have had some serious play time with the Touch Pro2 and the results have been largely positive, with a minor complaint here and there to offer balance. Let’s continue to look at the features-
General Performance
Performance is obviously crucial in any smartphone and this differs from platform to platform. BlackBerry, iPhone and Symbian devices tend to feel snappy, but Windows Mobile can sometimes lag when multiple applications are running. This is not always the case and some devices sprint along perfectly well no matter how many applications are running at a particular time.
I was ready to write a stinging statement about the Pro2 in terms of performance, but persevered and my final judgement is very different to my initial experience. It suffered from serious lags and freezes when an 8GB card was inserted and the device seemed to struggle to scroll through large numbers of photos and videos, at times stopping completely until it eventually woke up and started playing nicely again. This turned out to be a bit of a lesson for me because once I had backed up the card, formatted it and then loaded it up again things moved along nicely. The card used to sit in a BlackBerry so maybe there is an issue there.
Now and then the Pro2 does lag, but only for a second or two and only with many applications running. It is much less noticeable without TouchFLO running though and I would put this device up as a competent performer generally. It is more than capable of delivering video playback smoothly and dealing with anything that is thrown at it, but the way of Windows Mobile is that serious power users will push it to the limit and then slow downs may occur. One reader asked if it was as quick as the Touch HD and I would say yes it is. At some point I would expect to see a small software update appear though and this will resolve any remaining niggles.
Battery
There is a huge 1500mAh battery in the Pro2 and it is huge in size as well as the rating. On the first charge I managed over 2 hours of Wi-Fi use including a YouTube fest and much surfing, ten calls which totalled 23 minutes and twenty minutes of standard video playback. This brought the battery down to 40% so it would not be unreasonable to expect 1.5 days usage for a reasonably heavy per charge once it has been charged a few times.
Internet
You certainly have all the connectivity options you need built into this device, but how is the actual mobile web experience? HTC has made Opera the default browser in TouchFLO and with good reason. It looks great and is pretty fast at loading even the busiest of sites. As you can see, the main BBC site looks very similar to the desktop version and double tapping will bring you into a particular section just like the iPhone.
Pocket IE is also included for no other reason that it has to be there. There is little point in even opening this though because Opera provides a rich experience and the large screen and fast connection make the experience all the better.
Software Extras
As with any Windows Mobile device these days you can expect most of the bases to be covered in terms of included software. There is a game called Teeter included which takes full advantage of the G-sensor, and it is rather addictive once you get the hang of it. Audio booster is design to boost audio (there’s a surprise) when the headset is plugged in and it can make the music very loud which is good for me personally. JBlend is onboard to tackle Java installations and JETCET Presenter 5 is also there for the business brains among you.
Remote Desktop Mobile is expected from HTC devices these days and could well be one of the applications you use more than any other. WorldCard Mobile is included which is a neat application allowing the photographing of business cards and then automatically storing them as digital contacts. This rounds off a business centric set of software which is also able to cope with personal entertainment; YouTube, Streaming Media and RSS Hub ensure that.
The following line from the marketing literature caught my eye as well- “A contact centric system ensures that all your communications from individuals within your address book are close to hand. Open a contact and with a simple tap you can access current and historic information including emails, calls and text messages, all from the one screen. No longer is there the need to search your inbox or call history. Open your contact and it is there.”
This feels like it has jumped from the Palm Pre, but it really does work and within a day I had a whole new way to manage my contact history. It feels as though HTC has made some strides in the area of PIM under Windows Mobile, and if this is an example of what is to come this platform has a secure future ahead.
Conclusion
It is very easy when you have reviewed many HTC devices to get battle weary and to just look at each one as a slight variation on the previous models, and this is true of many of them. The Touch Pro2 does feel like a Touch HD squeezed into a TyTN II and this is most definitely a good thing.
It is a power users dream, but one which will also suit people who need to keep in contact throughout the day and thus it covers many of the areas power users want in a smartphone. It does not have the finesse of an iPhone, but then again nothing does. It does, however, offer top of the range features in almost every area.
Of course specifications are not everything, but it is to some people and the Pro2 feels like it will fit perfectly into the hands of anyone who has the slightest inkling towards Windows Mobile.

Palm Pre Hands On
The Boy Genius Report has managed to get hold of a Palm Pre and has already posted its first impressions. You can expect a full review over the coming days.
“Yes — you’re looking at the first site in the world to have a Palm Pre (or at least be able to post it up). There’s so much to say but that’s going to have to wait for our full review. In the meantime, here’s a couple first impressions of the phone and a few more photos after the break:
The Pre feels really good in your hand in terms of size and shape, but there’s a real plasticky aura about it. Additionally, things aren’t looking good for that QWERTY either. And hey, you know we take them keyboards seriously! When you try and type on the top row of keys, your finger hits the bottom part of the front piece and on top of that, you often hit multiple keys at the same time while typing. It’s actually really frustrating and doesn’t bode well for such a fantastic social communication/personal/business tool…”
International distribution of iPhone apps broken?
International distribution of iPhone apps broken? is an interesting new article at ipodnn which suggests that there is more than a little problem with the international iTunes setup.
“The international distribution of iPhone applications is not being handled properly at the App Store, one developer tells MacNN. Having launched a title called CameraUFO, Magno Urbano says he recently visited the US App Store to verify if his software was on sale. Although not at its main intended venue, the app could be found at a number foreign stores, though still not all of them.
A similar problem is said to exist for several of Urbano’s older titles, such as GhostCamera, indicating that the issue is not only a matter of slow propagation. Of the developer’s 17 total apps, five are said to disappear when switching to the Chinese or Brazilian stores, even though some of them date back to 2008. The missing apps also fail to appear in direct searches, suggesting that they do not occur at all in some App Store databases…”

Skyfire updated: now works on AT&T E71
Skyfire has been updated to v1.0 and brings with it compatibility with the AT&T E71. This isn’t official compatibility, but Nokia Experts has managed to get it working- “I downloaded Skyfire 1.0 on the E71x and received an unable to install error as I tried to upgrade from version 0.85. I then uninstalled the older version of Skyfire (DO THIS FIRST) and the 1.0 version installed just fine and I am happy to confirm that it indeed works like a champ with the soft key placements correct and everything. Bring on Hulu baby!
It is a large 1.2MB file, but I installed it to main memory to get optimal performance. I did have to play around a bit to get the right connection by switching between Operator (Proxyless) and Internet (MEdiaNet), but the Proxyless one eventually worked just fine.
There are some cool new features such as double press on the center action button of the navigational pad to toggle zoom levels. Hulu played well in an almost full screen window.”
New smartphone cases: these are good!
A couple of weeks ago I was given a demonstration of some new smartphone cases and was more than impressed with the quality and in particular the price of them.
These particular cases have an internal strap which is pulled to remove the smartphone and they also add little bulk to the unit. It is a clever idea indeed and in practice works very well. At the moment they are available for the BlackBerry Curve 8900, HTC Touch HD, Samsung Omnia and Nokia 5800 and are retailing at just £9.95 including VAT.
Available next week will be cases for the Blackberry Bold, Sony Ericsson Xperia, Blackberry Storm, Samsung Pixon and Nokia E71.

QOTD: The ‘New’ 247?
When the new PDA-247 was put up a number of you were very vocal about the way the site now works. Some of you were happy and others not so. Today’s questions is have you gotten used to the new 247 or would you prefer a more simplistic design?
