Tripometer Voice Edition for BlackBerry

Tripometer Voice Edition for BlackBerry is new and possibly the perfect tool for runners and walkers who need to know how far they have travelled- “Tripometer Voice Edition is a simple, easy to use program which utilizes the Blackberry’s GPS to calculate the speed and distance that you travel. It is designed for walking, running, biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, skating and more. Upon receiving an accurate GPS signal, Tripometer immediately begins to display your speed and total distance, in kilometers and miles.

Tripometer Voice Edition periodically announces your travel distance and your average speed since its previous announcement, through the speaker or headphones. The announced speed differs from the speed displayed on the screen, which is based on shorter intervals.

The voice feature is disabled by default. To enable it, open the Voice Announcement Settings screen and configure the unit of measurement and announcement interval according to your preferences.

Discounted upgrade pricing is available for users who wish to upgrade from other versions of Tripometer.”

BlackBerry Storm 2 launching within weeks?

Had enough of all the smartphone rumours flying around yet? Of course you haven’t, and here’s another one which looks more than a little plausable. BlackBerryOS is reporting that the BlackBerry Storm 2 could be out within weeks because Verizon’s technical support staff are already being trained to deal with it. Did you buy a BlackBerry Storm 1? Just how unhappy are you? I would be livid!

“I just received an e-mail from an ‘insider’ who works for Verizon over in their offices located down the street. This person works on a senior level and has been right in the past with her information. She mentioned that Verizon has been training their tech support all last week and this week for the Storm 2. They have been told to be ready to support this by the end of this month. Could this mean the Storm 2 will be out by the end of this month? She could not confirm the day of the release but she did say it will be out soon. The end of next month the latest. She also did mention that the Storm 2 WILL have WiFi. She will be e-mailing me documentation with in the week and once I receive them, you will be the 2nd to see them.”

A Whole Lotta Rosie on Android

A video demo has been released showing Rosie running on Android. This is believed to be a potential build of the future and to have been developed by Android fans from XDA Developers.

It is also believed to be running on an HTC device which makes the whole thing more tantalising- an HTC Hero perhaps? Take a look at the video and see what you think. It is incredibly impressive! Reminds me of webOS. Thanks to Janine for the details.

From Android Community- “Videos demonstrating what’s believed to be a future build of Android have been leaked, courtesy of Haykuro of the xdadevelopers forum. The videos, which you can see below, show a new, advanced Android desktop with more widgets and a streamlined GUI.”

Nokia 6600i slide announced

6600iNokia has announced the 6600i slide which is quoted as “Nokia’s smallest 5 megapixel slider to date.” Besides the camera there is VGA video recording, an accelerometer, Nokia Maps and an FM radio. The bad news is that there is no 3G and it only runs the series 40 OS.

“Nokia today presented the Nokia 6600i slide, a timeless beauty for imaging and sharing. The beauty is Nokia’s smallest 5 megapixel slider to date, and having it in your pocket you will never miss a moment to bring stories alive with the great snapshots.

In addition to its superb imaging capabilities, the Nokia 6600i slide indulges the quality-conscious consumer with its compact and elegant design which it has inherited from the commended Nokia 6600 slide. The brushed steel covers and chrome center key constitute both understated elegance as well as visual simplicity, and discreet tap commands bring the display alive, snooze alerts and silence or reject incoming phone calls.

The combination of 3G connectivity and excellent imaging capabilities, 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, and bright 2.2” display with 16 million colors, make capturing and sharing of memorable moments via various Internet services truly enjoyable. With an additional micro SD card the memory is expandable up to 16GB. In-box come a 1GB micro SD card and the Nokia stereo headset WH-203 with FM radio.

The Nokia 6600i slide has an estimated retail price of EUR 200 excluding taxes and subsidies and it is expected to start shipping in select markets in the third quarter of 2009.”

Fixed memory has had its day

sandiskMy 8GB iPhone is full to the brim with games, music, video and all sorts of other accumulated information such as emails and PIM data. Only two years ago 8GB seemed to be more than enough for most people, but with the advent of faster network speeds came the ability to download more content to a mobile device, and some of this content is huge. A film from iTunes can be over 1GB quite easily and many games now are running at 150MB or just below so it does not take much to film up the paltry 8GB. I now find myself in a situation that I thought I would never experience again; continually moving files on and off of a mobile phone to make sure that there is enough available for it to run. Not since the Palm Vx have I had this problem.

The obvious answer is for Apple to include an expansion slot, but we do not know if that will happen in the new model, and suspicions of a fixed 32GB of memory seem more likely to be accurate. On my BlackBerry Curve 8900 I can add a 16GB card, and maybe a 32GB one, and thus have the option to install almost anything I like. The iPhone does fall down because of iTunes in the respect of how much memory the average user will use because it is just too easy to install memory hungry media with a couple of clicks. I’m not complaining about this, but Apple of all companies needs to address the situation more than most.

In 2009 we expect smartphones to be hassle free, and on the whole they are, but one small issue can make managing a phone much more troublesome that it need be. I used to love tinkering with smartphones and sitting down for an hour making the perfect interface and freeing up memory was a positive experience, but the times change and now I just want something that works every day and needs little maintenance.

I think Apple will change one day, maybe soon, and join the ranks of Nokia, RIM and HTC who all recognise that in this media centric mobile world, the customer wants flexibility above all else and absolutely no time wasted on maintaining a mobile phone.

Dexim iPhone Cradle Review

deximThis is a short review of an accessory I managed to pick up last week. The O2 shops, in the UK, are selling a Dexim iPhone Cradle with a remote control for under £20 and this looked to be a good price when you consider the cost of buying the official Apple cradles. The universal cradle is still being sold for a whopping £30 and this does not exactly bring with it much flexibility.

The Dexim cradle is heavy, which is always a good sign, and includes an LED on the front so that you can check that it is running- I haven’t seen the colour change yet to show when the iPhone is fully charged so I presume that functionality is not included. All you need to do to get started is to connect it to your PC via USB and away you go. This will take care of synchronisation and charging which is maybe what most will use it for and to date I have had no issues with this part.

Because USB is used you can also plus it straight into the wall using the standard iPhone charger plug and this is where the next function comes into play- there is a line out port for exporting sound, or video, to a separate unit such as a TV or stereo system and my tests with a stereo system worked well. You will of course need the relevant cable to export this media, but the flexibility this simple addition adds is impressive.

The remote control is also useful for quickly skipping through music tracks and videos and also includes volume buttons. It is tiny though so make sure you keep it safe, and the inclusion of a battery for it is yet another bonus.

All in all I am mightily impressed with the Dexim cradle. It will not win any design awards, but looks fairly smart and the price is definitely the killer feature here.

Buy one Windows Mobile app, get five?

marketplaceMicrosoft intends to let purchasers of software from the upcoming Windows Marketplace run the software on up to 5 devices. There will also be a 24 hour no quibble guarantee on all purchases and remember that the devices will need to be running Windows Mobile 6.5 to use the Marketplace.

This is a good move for customers of course and it differentiates well from the alternative offerings from RIM and Apple, but software developers may not feel the same. One thing that is needed is a reason to develop for a platform and these ones appear to be aimed at selling more hardware, not software. More at Computerworld.
