How’s your iPhone 3.0 experience?

i3How is your iPhone 3.0 upgrade experience going so far? Have you already done the deed or have you set some time aside later to get it sorted. I must admit to being strangly excited about getting copy and paste, which is rather sad isn’t it…

UPDATE: the download is now available in the US and Europe. If you are not seeing the download option, disconnect and reconnect your iPhone from your PC/Mac and it should pop up.

At the time of writing it has only taken 3 minutes to get 200MB of the upgrade so the Apple servers appear to be holding up.

Can’t wait to update my iPod Touch :)

@Lazyboy – can’t believe how good the iPod Touch is . first few hours with it. shame the new iPhone costs so much.

  2. Philippa says:

I’ll be updating very soon, but I do expect problems this evening with everyone trying to download at once.

  3. lazyboy says:

Glad you’re enjoying the iPod Touch, Gavin. :) :)

I had reconciled myself to making do with the 3.0 upgrade until I could get the iPhone 3GS in August, but my resolve is starting to crack. I’m now considering flogging my 3G to cover the AT&T’s $200 instant upgrade premium.

    Help me, someone…

  4. Statto says:

It’s tipping down with rain here in Cardiff. I’m hoping it continues so my cricket match is called off so I can update and play with 3.0 How sad is that! :-(

  5. Statto says:

Update. Match is off. Damn :-)

  6. Philippa says:

Sad that you are playing cricket or sad because you want the update? :D

  7. Statto says:

Shaun – not sure if it’s my PC (I don’t think so) but just noticed timestamps on comments are an hour behind….

  8. Steve says:

I have an XP box (not on broadband) and a win2000 box (on broadband),
Can I download the update on the win2k box, burn to cd, upload to XP box and upgrade iphone there?
    (sigh…)

  9. Shaun says:

“just noticed timestamps on comments are an hour behind….”

    Thanks- fixed:)

  10. lazyboy says:

1.07 pm and still no sign of the update :(

Oh well, today has been good for my productivity; I’ve been finding lots and lots of stuff to do to keep the my mind off the time.

  11. lazyboy says:

1.10 pm: I spoke to soon – the update is downloading right now!

  12. Shaun says:

    Downloading in the UK now:)

  13. Shaun says:

If you don’t see the download option, disconnect and reconnect your iPhone.

  14. Philippa says:

    Downloading my copy now too.

  15. Shaun says:

Strange- completed and contacts there, but it is having to download calendar entries again

  16. lazyboy says:

Took about 15 minutes all told.

So far, things are definitely snappier. Safari is markedly faster. Spotlight search is just fantastic.

I haven’t had time to have a full play yet, but I’m loving it so far.

Typing this on my iPhone right now.

  17. Shaun says:

Yes- it is quicker. Didn’t expect that. Love the seacrh- hope it will eventually work in apps like Notepad.

  18. lazyboy says:

It used to take 3.3 seconds to fully launch Omnifocus…it’s now taking 2.6 seconds.

  19. Joe2316 says:

Just upgraded, will see how it goes!

  20. Statto says:

    Downloading now…..excited!

  21. lazyboy says:

Mail search on server works like a dream.

  22. Statto says:

    All gone pearshaped here.

Everything seemed to be going ok, right through to the point it said it was restarting the phone. It did, the iTunes window went blank, and I got a message saying the connection times out, check your network connections and try again – been doing that for the last 30 minutes – nothing wrong with my connections. Can access everything else.

My guess is Apple’s servers are taking a hit somewhere. Damned annoying. Meantime I’ve got a u/s phone with access only to emergency screen.

    Not a happy bunny

  23. Statto says:

    Done!

When are 02 going to activate MMS?

  24. Statto says:

Ah – they’re going to send me an MMS – if you haven’t received it after 10 min text ‘MMS’ to 1010

  25. Joe2316 says:

I miss BossPrefs and the Springboard adjustments(brightness etc) so look fwd to the jailbreak!

  26. Statto says:

Any UK iPhone owner had the MMS text from O2 yet. I haven’t. Guess maybe demand? But they did say if you haven’t heard in 10 mins send a repeat ‘MMS’ text to 1010. It’s been a couple of hours now…..

  27. Shaun says:

    nothing yet…

  28. Statto says:

Oh well. A good nights sleep will help calm everything down. Not that I ever send MMS (or very rarely) you understand, but having got the functionality now that every other phone on the planet has had for years……;-)

  29. Shaun says:

Only Apple can make cut and paste and MMS a big event…

  30. lazyboy says:

iTunes store is down at the moment – I guess those servers are being hit pretty hard.

  31. SEkker says:

Download went smoothly on my 2G iPhone. Found and resolved one software glitch.

Seems a little faster, but nothing to write home about.

We’ll see how things go – so far, it’s subtle things that look like they will be pretty cool. For example, here in the US, AT&T has some wifi hotspots around urban areas. Now, all iPhones running 3.0+ software are supposed to seamlessly connect without having to log in each time. My last business trip, I would have used the local att hotspots, but it was such a pain logging in each time.

  32. janon says:

ohh my god this is awesome, mms and copy/paste, apple are true innovative..

  33. Philippa says:

@janon glad you are coming around the right way of thinking ;)

(no mms message here yet btw, but since I’ve sent two of the things ever it’s no big loss!)

  34. Statto says:

Had my message from O2 about MMS – it works now. Not that I’ll use it but nice to know it’s there. I’m much happier about having SMS forwarding :-)

  35. Shaun says:

    still waiting for my message…

  36. sidthebad says:

Great. Had a bunch of installation issues but that’s down to my PC. Every firmware upgrade is a major hurdle!

The end result is so worth it. I can’t say I’m seeing the speed improvements others claim but I love spotlight search (especially in mail) and a2dp for my headphones is great!

Ahh! Feels so much better now and I’m sure there’s mote to discover.

    Sid

  37. gavinfabl says:

I have updated my ipod Touch. Took 13 mins from plugging connector to pulling usb out of PC. Very impressive. All games, etc intact. Why cant Windows Mobile updates be like this. Bluetooth Stereo quality is awesome.

  38. lazyboy says:

    @Gavin

    Fanboy. ;)

  39. Shaun says:

Looks like you can now have mobileme and exchange on one iPhone, amongst many other hidden features…

  40. Philippa says:

Got mine around lunchtime. All I need now is a reason to use MMS…

  41. gavinfabl says:

    @ Lazyboy

    Definitely a Fan :)

  42. JLP says:

I’ve been enjoying 3.0 for a week now and it’s very very nice. (Pd devs got it early–you can too for $99/yr :D ) Today I was checking out web apps and was excited to find that our Date Wheel web app runs MUCH smoother in the Safari update. That was a pleasant surprise.

I also like search–interesting how they implemented it. Getting used to the copy/cut/paste. Difficult when there are only 2 digits, but glad to have it.

Unfortunately, my son has taken over my iPhone to play Peggle, so I haven’t seen it much in the past two days.

  43. Gnam says:

Downloading right now – it’s going to take over an hour to download but at least that gives me time to charge my nokia bluetooth stereo headphones (gives geeky grin).

over the last year i’ve been using almost equally my nokia n800 and ipod touch but i reckon this update could see me selling my nokia tablet…

  44. jah says:

And they all told me MMS and A2DP was not needed! Strange that :)

  45. Philippa says:

    Gnam – you’re alive!!!

  46. Gnam says:

Ehm… (touches wood) YES, and kicking!
    ;)

  47. Rubber B says:

I’m not having such a good experience. Tried to update my wife’s iphone 3G (using Win Xp SP2, itunes 8.2). Update downloaded, but during the update process I got the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! A sight not seen since the bad old Win 98 days. The iphone has entered “retore mode” (ie unsuable until restored) but every time I try to retore it from itunes, the same thing happens- Blue Screen of Death. Not a happy bunny. Plus wife now hates me for bricking her iphone. Can someone save my marriage?!

  48. Gnam says:

Well, my Touch seems like it wants to open windows and do animations at a quicker speed than before although the effects are not as smooth as before. I guess they’ll be slicker on the new iPhone on Speed.

A colleague bricked his iPhone at work today (unplugged the thing before it had finished) but managed to install the new firmware by switching to another pc.
    ;)

  49. Peter says:

Rubber B – The blue screen suggests the PC is the problem, rather than the phone, and that the phone will still recover when able to.

The issue is probably a driver, they’re the ones that tend to cause BSOD’s. Probably best to look on the web for an answer – you’re probably not the only person.
Also, I think there’s a SP3 for XP – check iTunes 8.2 to see if it has problems with SP2?

    Peter

  50. Rubber B says:

Thanks very much, Peter. I managed to fix it over the weekend. You’re absolutely right about it being a driver issue. I discovered on the web that Logitech webcams and HP printers are the most common culprits but, in case it helps anyone reading this, in my case it was neither of those. It turned out to be caused by a dodgy USB driver which I had installed as part of Freecom Media Suite (software that came with a Freecom external hard drive). Once I had uninstalled that software the iphone was able to restore itself and I could then re-sync the content. My wife now has a fully working iphone running 3.0. Marriage saved! Thanks again.

  51. Mike says:

Weeks late on the comment but 3.0 has more or less made my iPhone what I want it to be.

I could still quibble with the rest about no multi-tasking etc and the effectiveness of notification technology remains to be seeen as I have no apps that use it yet but the snappier Safari makes a real difference (I’m forgetting to turn Wi-Fi on at home now) and cut/paste is a revolution! Sadly, I’m starting to write short documents in the Notes app now and then email them to their destination.

All told, a great improvement. Ideas for 4.0 anyone?
