How Apple could kill off the competition
The iPhone has a sizeable lead in terms of third party applications already and in terms of how the interface reacts to human touch, but there are a couple of issues that stop some people from jumping onboard the ibandwagon.
First up is data entry which I for one still hate with a passion. Give me a small physical keyboard and I can do so much more than I ever could on a screen. Emails, document editing and all manner of other PIM activities can be completed much quicker with a physical keyboard and I cannot understand why Apple has not included such a feature on its latest model. Even a clip-on accessory would be useful, and potentially offer the best of both worlds.
I would like to see a snap-on keyboard which when attached would reduce the screen to half-size and then I could bang out emails all day long. This could then be removed for game playing, video watching etc. and would suit the way most people need to use a smartphone. I have two lives- one for work and one for home and this way I could change the iPhone to suit my needs at the time with little extra expense. Maybe I am giving away a potentially great business ides, but it seems like a logical add-on to me which would sell in huge numbers and would actually fit the iPhone design quite well.
Also, how about a slide-out keyboard for the iPhone which works in a similar way to the HTC Touch Pro smartphones? It would still not be ideal and would no doubt add bulk, but would be a great selling feature which could catch the eyes of many current smartphone users who need good quality data entry.
Secondly, and it is a subject talked about a lot, would be an interface enhancement. The current set up is tedious and a real pain when you have many applications and games installed. Just how difficult would it be to add folders to the interface? You could access all of your games, applications and other stuff from the one main screen just by tapping folders and automatically jumping to new pages. This would make the entire system quicker to use, and while some like it as it is, this offers an option that pleases everyone.
Come on Apple- a couple of small changes and we would all be happy.

Toshiba TG01 delayed…
The Toshiba TG01 looks to have been delayed somewhat from the proposed launch date of ‘mid June’. msmobiles points out that we are still waiting, obviously, and I must say that it is strange how little attention this phone has had recently. It could be a killer device.
“… but we guess that O2 is to blame: it has promised that Toshiba TG01 will be on sale “middle of June” (and we have already more like “the end of June”) and it still is not on sale!
Description from O2:
The Toshiba TG01 comes along with more than one superlative. In addition to the big 4.1 inch display (10.4 cm), the 1 GHz processor of the device is the most powerful processor currently available in all smart phones. Toshiba based the development of the display on the company’s experience in LCD TV. The result: pin sharp pictures in brilliant colours. The special clou: The smart phone is based on Windows Mobile and can be controlled by gestures. Users, for example, answer calls by shaking the mobile phone. And, they are able to navigate between open applications by tilting the phone to the right or the left…”

Adobe Flash Player 10 coming in October
Adobe Flash Player 10 is coming to Symbian, Android, webOS and Windows Mobile in October. Adobe CEO Shantanu Naraye didn’t mention iPhone or BlackBerry on a recent earnings call which is surprising, but the others are more than likely much easier to implement it on. More at Talk Android.

eWallet for BlackBerry upgraded
From Ilium Software- Today we released an upgrade to eWallet for BlackBerry! You might remember that back in December 2007 we partnered with WebIS for the release of eWallet 6.0, bringing the best features of FlexWallet and eWallet together in one program. This upgrade is another release in that partnership.
This new version is full of great features – the best news of all is that eWallet for BlackBerry now fully supports the BlackBerry Storm! Storm owners can enjoy a better experience with eWallet thanks to an updated interface using new elements designed just for touchscreen devices.
This BlackBerry eWallet upgrade will also let users:
–Get synced up fast: Improved behavior for first-time syncing makes it simple to set up and get your data where you need it.
–Find any card in no time: With faster scroll speeds you can browse through your cards quickly and get right to the info you need.
–Keep intruders away in a snap: It’s easier than ever to lock your wallet files and protect your info.
–Search smarter: Use Quick Search and find what you’re looking for fast.

iPhone 3G S Outsells iPhone 3G on Launch Day in the UK
The iPhone 3GS has outsold the 3G in comparison to last year’s launch day. I had a look in the O2 and Carphone Warehouse store local to me and there were still some available, but not many. No queues to speak of, but I guess this means more stock is available this time around. Thanks to drc. More at mobile burn.
“The iPhone 3G S has got off to an incredible start with news reaching us that by lunchtime we’d sold more iPhone 3G S handsets than we sold iPhone 3G devices on launch day last year.
Sales are still going strong and we expect to have sold 50% more iPhone 3G S handsets than last year’s launch by the close of business today. Footfall to our shops this morning was 10 times higher than an average day and our online site saw a 150% increase in traffic.
More stock is being sent out to stores over the weekend with a further delivery early next week. It’s been interesting to see that the black iPhone 3G S is outselling the white one by 3:1.”

QOTD: Battery restrictions?
Is there anything you do not do on your smartphone to save battery life? I tend to set the update for my Exchange account on 30 minute intervals on the iPhone because of the battery.
Focus on Mobile Platforms: Palm OS / webOS

Focus on Mobile Platforms: Palm OS / webOS
Introduced: 1996
History: Palm OS was once so popular every handheld device was called a Palm Pilot by people who did not understand PDAs. To this day, the phrase lives on and I still hear it occasionally. Palm nailed mobile operating systems right from the start, or rather Jeff Hawkins did, and Palm OS was simple, effective and most importantly had a short learning curve for anyone new to mobile computing. The majority of people were new to mobile computing back then, but the Grafitti input system, long battery life and stability made it the perfect tool for business people and casual users alike.
Thousands of software titles appeared and it soon dispatched Psion who failed to market properly in America. Only Windows Mobile remained as a competitor and the battle was on. For many years Palm OS ruled the roost and to this day lots of people still believe it to be the best mobile operating system ever. Personally I loved it and to this day only EPOC stands above it for speed, stability and class.
Over time, Palm moved to the smartphone market (invented it really) and then completely stopped innovating. Everyone else caught up and then overtook Palm OS, which was hampered by being unable to utilise 3G, and Palm came close to extinction last year.
Hardware partners: None. Sony and others tried in the past, but moved on.
Notable devices: Palm V, Sony Clie N770CU, Treo 650
Current Position: Palm OS has almost no market share left and webOS is too new to judge at this time.
Likely users: A diverse range of technical and non-technical consumers.
Potential: Palm OS is dead. webOS has just been born and time will tell as to how well it can infiltrate a market which has moved on from niche to global. Without doubt webOS is second best to iPhone in terms of all round appeal, but will Palm have the muscle and foresight to 1) keep ahead of the game and 2) let developers develop and find an angle to bust the other platforms.
There is a tremendous affection for Palm as a brand and this may well be enough to keep things ticking along. Money is a concern with Palm, but if it keeps its head above water for another year we may well see Palm become a big force again.
SuperJump for the Storm
SuperJump is a new game for the BlackBerry Storm which is easy to play, cheap and very addictive- “Super jump is a fun accelerometer-based jumping game. This game is perfect for casual gaming as it’s extremely easy to pick up and just play. All you do is tilt your BlackBerry to control your character!
You control a colorful character and your goal is to jump on the platforms to get as high as possible. Some platforms are tricky, as they break after you jump on them. You can also get additional boost by jumping on the springs. Some platforms even move, making it harder for your to jump on them.
The game records your highest score. You can also decide to turn on and off all the sounds in the game. Enjoy!”

Harbor Master: Flight Control for the seaworthy
Do you like Flight Control? Do you have a desire to play the same game on water? If so, take a look at Harbor Master which essentially the same game as Flight Control, but with some small additions such as cyclones which can move your boats off track.
There is an element of Airport Mania involved as well as you wait for the boats to unload and despite the complete lack of originality it is a worthy purchase for $0.99. It is smooth, pleasing on the eye and as much fun as Flight Control- I do wonder what Firemint think about it though?

News round-up: 21st June 2009
redsn0w has been released by the iPhone dev team and brings the iPhone 3.0 jailbreak to Windows users and also iPod Touch 2nd generation owners. I haven’t taken the plunge yet- you go first and tell us how you got on…
Here is a bizarre but true story detailing how a lost BlackBerry saved a kidnapped woman. A video with more information is here.
Almost 700,000 Palm Pre apps have been downloaded already and this is a good number considering how many have been sold and how few apps are currently available- bodes well for the future.
iUnlock.com has gotten hold of a Nokia E72 and ripped it to pieces, physically that is. Why people do this I don’t know, but lots of others like to see pictures of pulled apart smartphones. Ho hum.
Terrestrica has been released for Windows Mobile phones and includes a variety of GPS features such as geolocation and business specific uses which may be of benefit. Apparantly is needs a GPS fix before it can open though which is a little odd.
Don’t forget our competition to win $50 of mobile software for any mobile platform. All you have to do is enter a number, but the response has been quite lacklustre. We got almost 50 comments about the iPhone 3.0 upgrade and only 8 so far to win free stuff? Go figure…
