I make no allowances at all for my HTC Pro 2 and Nokia 5800 (and E90). I always get over 1 days of use from my Smartphones. A Smartphone with poor battery life is not really that ‘smart’!

I used to keep the screen on my iPhone 3G set to 1/3 brightness – easily bright enough for most conditions except for full-on summer sun – but that was the only compromise I made.

With the 3GS, the brightness can be left at the default setting (1/2) which is great.

I’ve been most impressed with the battery life of the 3GS.

I don’t use my iPhone for listening to music much anymore. It didn’t put a terrible strain on the battery, but enough that I’d worry towards the end of the day.

Wifi is usually switched off on both the g1 and iPhone when I’m away from home to stop the devices scanning or trying to attach to a known hotspot.

The existence of lock screens for WinMob encouraged me to try them out, and disable the screen timeout, but with my HTC Touch, back backlight never quite extinguished, just went dim, and the resultant battery life was so significantly reduced that it was not possible to run the phone in that mode of operation.

So for me, screen lock software was redundant, ie. don’t use it.

On all my recent phones I set the sync period to occur every 2 hours. Since moving to the Nokia E71, I now have push email enabled. I only charge the phone every 3 days. Great battery life for a smartphone.
