LaterDude Pro for BlackBerry

I really like the idea of LaterDude Pro for BlackBerry, and the price is good as well- “LaterDude Pro is an application that simply reminds you to call, SMS or email someone. The efficiency of it is that it interacts with the system and creates a new event into the internal calendar application.

After installation, LaterDude Pro is available for use on your device. It does not have an icon but is always present on your system via the Menu.

You click on Menu -> Remind me later! to access the application.
You can launch LaterDude Pro from everywhere, but if you are in the following applications then you can invoke the current entry:

- Call Log
- Messages/email Application
- SMS Application
- Address Book

From these 4 applications you can select an entry to directly get its contents imported into the fields of LaterDude Pro.

For example if you want to get notified tomorrow that you have to contact your Doctor, you go into the Address Book, scroll to your Doctor’s entry, press Menu -> Remind me later! to set up a call-back reminder. The phone number and name is then already set in the LaterDude Pro application.”

Sprint now selling the Palm Pre online

rebateSprint is finally selling the Palm Pre online. Being from the UK I do struggle with all the savings and rebates which are attached to any price, but I guess the final total is $199.99 + contract.

“It’s here, and you can only get it from Sprint. The gorgeous 3.1” touchscreen lets you move seamlessly between open applications – email, maps, photos, websites and so much more. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard lets you be a texting machine, and the smooth, rounded design feels natural in your hand and comfortably small in your pocket.

The Palm Pre was the big winner at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, taking home both the Best in Show and the People’s Voice Award. Now it’s your turn to see what all the fuss is about.”

A year with the E71

e71Eric’s Corner has published an article detailing a full year with the Nokia E71. In my opinion it is the best smartphone Nokia has made to date, but I can’t remember having any smartphone for a full year.

“My E71 has travelled with me all over the world. Two main selling points of the E71 for me are its stylish design and highly demanded qwerty keyboard. The E71 is still one of the thinnest available QWERTY keyboard equipped phones. It’s one of the first QWERTY phones to use metal accents which was quickly followed by the Blackberry Bold. More important than looks is the E71′s great keyboard. The raised keys make it easy to distinguish keys and the narrow design makes it possible to use the phone in one hand. The keyboard is positioned well away from the sides of the phone so reaching for the keys at the edge of the keyboard, like the letter A, are not a chore. The weight of the phone lies just a bit below the center around the keyboard giving it good stability while typing. I actually use my E71 to write my reviews while I’m commuting because it’s much more convenient than pulling out my laptop…”

Wireless power 18 months away

wp1Eric Giler, chief executive of Witricity, has claimed that wireless power for cell phones could be 12-18 months away, and that the possibility for this technology could go far wider. Can’t wait…

A system that can deliver power to devices without the need for wires has been shown off at a hi-tech conference.

The technique exploits simple physics and can be used to charge a range of electronic devices.

Eric Giler, chief executive of US firm Witricity, showed mobile phones and televisions charging wirelessly at the TED Global conference in Oxford.

He said the system could replace the miles of expensive power cables and billions of disposable batteries.

“There is something like 40 billion disposable batteries built every year for power that, generally speaking, is used within a few inches or feet of where there is very inexpensive power,” he said.

Trillions of dollars, he said, had also been invested building an infrastructure of wires “to get power form where it is created to where it is used.”

Google Maps for mobile adds layers

layersGoogle Maps for mobile has been updated to include layer support. It is available for Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile and will support other platforms soon.

“Just as the world itself can be viewed through many lenses, the latest version of Google Maps for mobile allows you to view many layers of information on your map at the same time. Layers make it easier and more useful to find and interact with geographic content, like public transit, traffic (with incidents!), local search results, Latitude friend locations, Wikipedia and more. You can also see your own My Maps content as a layer on Google Maps for mobile. And finally, multiple layers can be combined at the same time to give you a content-rich view of what’s around you.”

News round-up: 23rd July 2009

news23More details of the HTC Firestone have emerged and it’s looking quite good. I’m not sure the harsh angles have a place anymore, but that will be down to personal choice.

Rumours abound that HTC will be making more Android devices than Windows Mobile ones soon. It is hardly surprising, but of great concern to WM fans and Microsoft.

A new beta (0.9.0.134) of the WordPress application for BlackBerry has been released and includes many useful improvements and fixes. This is quickly becoming one of the best on any platform.

Retro fans rejoice! The Secret of Monkey Island is now available for the iPhone. It is not cheap, but is also not a direct port and brings many enhancements over the original. At over 350MB, you get a lot of game for your money.

A new Palm Pre development option has arrived courtesy of MobiOne. pre central has all of the details including some comments by the developer.

Recycling smartphones…

boldTV adverts, in the UK at least, are somewhat dominated by new companies offering to buy your phone for a good price. Actors pop up during the advert saying things like “They sent me £80! Wow!” I was curious about these services so decided to check their websites and see what they would offer me for a smartphone, and also what the average price I could get on eBay was as well. There are associated charges on eBay and of course these have been considered. I have chosen Mazuma because their advert is the most annoying.

Mazuma will offer the following for these popular models-

Palm Treo Pro- £40
HTC Touch Pro- £130
HTC Touch HD- £124
Nokia N95 8GB- £129
BlackBerry Storm 9500- £90
BlackBerry Bold 9000- £65
iPhone 3GS 32GB- £255

As I went through the prices I realised that doing a comparison with eBay is pointless because some of the prices being offered are ridiculous- a BlackBerry Bold for £65 and a Treo Pro for £40? This is crazy and even with the charges that eBay levy, which seem to get higher every week, you would be much better off using eBay to dispose of your old phone. Obviously you also have to contend with countless Nigerians and Indonesians who are trying to rip you off, but if you are savvy you will be much better off taking your chances.

Mazuma make a green claim on the website as well-

We believe REUSE is a key aspect of RECYCLING so we do our best to promote reuse by making our programme very attractive for you to use.

We process your redundant phones, which are then reused in developing markets such as China, Africa, Pakistan and India. Another good thing as your phones help in improving and developing communications in these economies.

So go on: magic your mobile into cash with Mazuma Mobile – today.

It is interesting how these handsets cost a LOT in some of these countries compared to the UK. I know for a fact that these would fetch huge money in India. I am not suggesting that Mazuma and similar companies are doing anything wrong, but that there is a better way (from a financial point of view) to let go of your old mobile phone.

datewheelDate Wheel is under development for the iPhone and should be with us all fairly soon. I have no details on release date, but do have a screenshot which suggests that the transistion to iPhone is going very well.

Here’s some details of the original app- “Date Wheel™ is the electronic version of the plastic wheel-shaped calendar used by businesses to calculate lead times.  It can also be used to calculate the time between two dates or to calculate the Julian date for any day of the year.  The time is calculated in months, weeks, days, and business days.  This handy program performs all the functions of your plastic wheel and more.  New ‘today’ lock feature makes countdowns automatic!  Save tasks for future reference.  Use for both business applications and personal applications—anytime you need to quickly calculate the time between two dates.”

Demystifying The Nokia N97 – The Power User Fiasco

n974Demystifying The Nokia N97 – The Power User Fiasco has been published at Symbian Guru and some good insights are included. This is one device which causes more discussion than almost any other at the moment.

My last article on the Nokia N97 looked at it from a connected user standpoint, finding it pretty perfect for someone looking for a tool to stay in touch with their friends, family and internet buddies through Facebook, Email, IM, Twitter,… But given the N97’s great resolution touchscreen, full QWERTY, S60 5th Edition, it is regarded by many as a device for power users. When the N97 was announced, many persons were happy to see that Nokia had finally released a handset that could appeal to their advanced needs. So how does it perform in that regard?

Despite the N97 being capable of handling a lot of power user needs, I ran into 3 big issues with it. I might as well call them THE 3 issues that make or break the power user experience.
