The Palm Pre not selling so well after all?

7 July 2009 by Shaun One Comment

pre2TechCrunch has posted an article suggesting that the Palm Pre is not selling as well as first thought. Over 300,000 have been sold, but when 50 Sprint stores were contacted, the following conclusion could be drawn- “None of the stores contacted had sold out of Pre and the majority had ‘plenty’ available. This compares with 8 percent of the stores contacted last week saying they had sold out of the Pre (down from 28 percent in Week 2 and 38 percent in Week 1). iGR’s channel checks clearly show that Sprint is meeting the current demand for the device with the inventories available in the stores. The report also notes that stores are reporting a dropoff in the number of Pres being sold, with 40% of stores willing to discuss their volume sales reporting fewer than 10 sales this week. 33% of stores reported sales of 10-20 units, with 16% reporting 20-30. That’s per week. I’d be surprised if most Apple stores are seeing similar sales in a matter of hours.”

None of this is conclusive, but it seems that if you want a Pre it should not be too difficult to get one.

Maybe when one TelCo has exclusive distributorship, it lessens market favourability.
I, personally, would never buy a smartphone on a TelCo’s contract because I never make enough telephone calls to justify the overhead.
And I certainly seem to read a lot of complaints about US Carrier, Sprint, on the net.

I do and expect to do so in the future, use a smartphone as a PDA first and a phone second, and maybe I am not too alone in this area.

Here in Australia, apparently Telstra has the exclusive rights to the Pre, and it too is expected to be lumbered with a hefty margin to cover call and data costs. Which is why I decided to get a Centro for the time being.
… besides which, I did try out TealOS, and while not functionally identical, did look the part :-)
