I am firmly of the mindset that if you want a smartphone with a decent camera you should buy a Nokia. If you want the best PIM go for a BlackBerry, and if you simply want as many applications as possible get yourself an iPhone.
This was highlighted in a meeting the other day when it started to rain heavily outside. Someone mentioned how they love to go to sleep with heavy rain outside and I was (sadly) able to proclaim that there was an app for that. I showed them sleepmaker rain and they were hooked straight away.
I am taking my children to the Science Museum in London tomorrow and it is amazing how useful a phone can be when so many applications are available for it. The train times will be checked with National Rail and once we hit the Tube network, Tube Deluxe will guide us to South Kensington station. During the trip my children will no doubt get bored so Colorama will keep my 5 year old daughter happy and Real Football will keep my 9 year old son occupied for a few minutes.
GPS will help us as we wander around before and after our visit and I should be able to locate the nearest coffee shop for my Cappuccino fix before we start. There are so many applications that can do this kind of thing that I do not know which one to choose.
More than ever before we are able to plan, purchase tickets and close all of the boring tasks associated with a day out in style and this will gradually rub off onto the other main mobile platforms.
Software is still king and the humble smartphone is all the better for it. I just want to see the same level or originality put into programming software for Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and the like…

I am disappointed that BlackBerry developers have not come out with some of the key types of apps that I want which were available on the Palm platform. There have been some great titles in the last few months, but I’m still missing some functionality that I desperately need for my business.
