What was your Walkman like?

walkmanGizmodo has posted a series of Sony Walkman adverts from the 80′s in image and video form to celebrate its 30th Birthday. I remember my first Walkman well and the feeling of being able to listen to music anywhere I like was mesmerising at the time. The cound quality was also very, very good. In the days of iPods and a myriad MP3 players it is easy to forget where it all started. What was your Walkman like?

It was a black sony and cost 30 pounds (a lot for me at the time). Absolutely loved it. Actually my favourite was my first cd walkman though. The freedom to skip between tracks and shuffle!

I had the first one & several others along the way. I still have it & all the goofy accessories that came with it. It only played tapes, but it was great.

Mine was a Panasonic one, I was late to the game. Loved it, used to listen to tapes on the train up from Glasgow to Aberdeen.

Mine was a Sanyo, Xmas 1981. Fab sound. Lasted years. I remember listening to Yoko Ono’s ‘Walking on thin ice’ on it as my first listen – superb!

A light blue Sony I bought in Singapore when I was 12 with all my savings. I wasn’t used to the bargaining system, and I had to convert the price from US dollars to NZ dollars in my head. By the time I worked out the price, the guy changed it again, so the process would start over, until in the end I bought it for next to nothing (can’t remember the exact price of course!) I got some bootleg tapes there from a market, and I was a happy little camper. In the end the headphone plug gave out on me.

I tried some other brands from time to time, but in the end I always came back to Sony because they just sounded great to me. I now have a 30GB iPod.

I had the top of the range Sony Walkman that played tapes. I moved over to the mini disc things which held loads of music and could access tracks much quicker plus the recordings were digital .
