Nokia and AIS to launch new mobile email solution Nokia Messaging

messageNokia has found its way to the Thai market with its push-email service. Nokia and AIS today announced their collaboration to offer the Nokia Messaging push-email service for AIS subscribers. The deal makes AIS the first operator in Thailand to offer Nokia Messaging, which supports all leading consumer email solutions, such as Ovi Mail, Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail as well as local email service providers.

“Services like Nokia Messaging contribute to easier mobile living for our customers, and we’re happy to be the first to deliver this service in Thailand. We believe our customers will find this service appealing, both in terms of user-friendliness and price,” says Mr. Somchai Lertsutthiwong, Executive Vice President – Marketing, AIS.

“Nokia wants to make mobile email available for as many people as possible, and the agreement with AIS is an important milestone. With Nokia Messaging, we meet people’s need for access to email whenever they want and wherever they want it,” says Mr. Shumit Kapoor, General Manager, Nokia (Thailand) Ltd.

Nokia Messaging is an easy to set-up and easy to use push email service which allows the user to mobilize up to ten personal email accounts on one device. After activating his accounts through a simple set-up process, the user can read, send, smart forward, reply to emails, download, read and attach files directly on their mobile phone. Push email technology ensures fast delivery of email to the mobile phone as soon as the email arrives on the email server.

To make Nokia Messaging more appealing to consumers, AIS also introduced two new data packages. One is “Nokia Messaging Bt 199″ which allows AIS consumers to use Nokia Messaging up to 5MB per month for as low as Bt 199 per Month. The other is “Nokia Messaging Bt 399 Unlimited” offering unlimited use of Nokia Messaging.

Also launched commercially today are two new Nokia Eseries devices – Nokia E52 and Nokia E63 – which support Nokia Messaging. Nokia Messaging also comes out of the box with the Nokia E75 and is supported on more than 20 Nokia Symbian devices, including the Nokia N97, and other popular devices such as the Nokia E71 and Nokia N95 8GB.

Smartphone sales continue to rise

sesSales of smartphones have continued to rise at an impressive 27% since this time last year. It is good news for almost all smartphone manufacturers with RIM s market share increasing by 1.4% to 18.7, HTCs increasing by 1.9% to 6% and Apple s jumping from 2.8 all the way up to 13.3%. Nokia saw a drop of 2.4% to 45% and the ‘others’ saw the biggest loss from 25.1% to 13.9%.

These figures suggest that the market is becoming more focussed around the main players and that Apple will be moving above RIM at some stage. Let’s not forget that Android could dent the iPhone and leave RIM clear for another leap forward. Will be interesting to see the changes in another 6 months. More at AppleInsider.

QOTD: Most expensive software?

qotd22What is the most expensive mobile software you have bought to date? I think it is still WorldMate for Palm OS for me which was $99 at the time. I used it twice…

MobileNavigator British Isles for iPhone mini-review

navi1I’m going to keep this review short because there are some plus points and minus points in MobileNavigator which make the software what it is, and more importantly there is little to talk about…

When you read this the software will be available for £37.99, but as of June 30th it will revert to the standard price of £59.99. In its current form, it is just about worth the asking price, but £59.99 is pushing it in my opinion.

There are some notable disappointments which make the software unsuitable for people who travel a lot-

There is no 6 digit postcode support which can cause problems. For example I had to travel to a location which is on a long rod, approx. 4 miles, and there was no way for me to narrow down the destination.

I couldn’t find a way to change my route if I hit a road block during a trip. UPDATE: I eventually found a way to do this, but it is fairly well hidden in the menus.

There is no traffic support- this would not normally be expected, but even as an add-on subscription service this can be very handy indeed.

Speed camera support is absent which is standard in most GPS set ups these days.

No zooming is present and the default view is not easy to read in busy areas. It is attractively presented, but the practicality side is not as good as it could be.

In four test trips it took me down dead ends twice and it also seemed to take me on much longer routes that I would normally take. As an example a TomTom will take me to work in 12 minutes and 9.6 miles. MobileNavigator felt that 19 minutes and 20 miles (including a motorway) was more appropriate?

On the plus side it loads very quickly and has run very smoothly on my iPhone 3G and there is virtually no learning curve. It takes two minutes to understand and appears to be an efficient piece of software.

Conclusion

As a basic sat nav it performs fairly well and is comparable to some of the other budget options available on different platforms, but it needs much more functionality and more features to be taken seriously. More worrying are the included maps which gave me little confidence in the time that I tried it.

LaunchPad for BlackBerry: a must buy for under $1?

LaunchPad for BlackBerry performs a simple task, but at under $1 is tremendous value. “Ever wanted to put a link to your favorite website straight on your homescreen? LaunchPad will let you do just that! LaunchPad is a utility to allow you to make your own homescreen web launcher icons by simply giving it a URL, a title, and optionally and icon. LaunchPad allows you to pick your own image as an icon, or it will even try to fetch the icon from the website if it provides a large size icon (not all sites do this, but many of the larger ones such as CNN do)

Creating an icon is simple. Click on the LaunchPad icon and you are presented with a simple form. Enter all the values, and then click the button. That’s it! Now you have your very own web launcher icon on your homescreen. Clicking it will launch the browser and take you straight to the page you chose. The perfect, eye-pleasing solution for all those frequently visited websites.”

New Pre apps arrive thanks to preDevCamp

calcSome new Palm Pre apps have emerged following the preDevCamp at the weekend and one in particular looks quite good. From pre central- “Our friend Marco went out to the preDevCamp at Palm HQ in Sunnyvale, California, and lucky us, he took a video camera and blogged it up (mad props to you, mate!). Aside from some delicious-looking pizza, we also got a look at a few applications that were developed/refined during the programming sessions.

First up is an app that pulls dream summaries posted online down to the device, refreshing with the accelerometer shake API. Next was a video poker app, followed by Word Ace, by Self-Aware Games, described as a combination of Texas Hold’em and Scrabble. Word Ace was demonstrated working on multiple platforms and playing together in peace and harmony on two Pres and an iPhone. Once released, Word Ace looks to be a very in-depth application, with profile support, awards, and more. Another attendee coded up a simple little accelerometer app that bounces a tiny Palm logo around the screen as you tilt the phone. The developer behind Twee was also in attendance and demonstrated the slick CSS3 animations used in his application…”

1 million HTC Magics sold

magicThe HTC Magic is a OK smartphone and definately better than the G1, but to sell 1 million already bodes well for the future of the Android platform and HTC.

From phandroid- “The Android Revolution keeps on picking up steam, much of it courtesy to an HTC-fueled injection of hot hardware. At an event launching the HTC Hero in Taiwan, company CEO Peter Chou announced that sales of the HTC Magic have surpassed 1 Million units! That is quite a feat for any mobile phone and considering the Android Powered Magic has only been available since the end of April…”

Ovi Mail by Nokia hits 1 million mark

ovi1Nokia has issued a press release detailing the recent passing of the 1 million mark for Ovi Mail. A good number, but when you consider the potential user base…

“Espoo, Finland – With over one million accounts activated in just over six months, Ovi Mail is quickly establishing itself as the email account for the developing world. Specifically designed for on device set-up, people can get their first email address and create and manage their accounts – no PC needed.

“More than just reaching a company milestone, this proves to us that there is a real appetite in the developing world for these types of tailored services,” said Tom Furlong, head of Consumer Messaging at Nokia. “For first-time email users, Ovi Mail provides a digital identity and we are thrilled by its rapidly rising adoption rate.”

The inspiration for Ovi Mail came from the growing number of people, mostly in developing countries, without access to a PC. The top five countries for Ovi Mail subscribers are India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Since its inception in December 2008, Ovi Mail is available in more than 180 countries and supports 20* languages.

Ovi Mail is free to set-up straight out of the box and comes with spam filters to block unwanted emails. It is also accessible from a broad range of Nokia devices with the Nokia 2330 classic, Nokia 2630 and Nokia 5310 XpressMusic being some of the most popular devices used.

To access Ovi Mail, simply go to the email setup wizard on your Nokia Series 40 device or Nokia S60 device such as the Nokia N97. Ovi Mail is also available on the web at https://mail.ovi.com/.”
