QOTD: Which platform?

qotd22Which platform do you think will be most dominant in 12 months time? We have asked this question often, but as new devices arrive the answers change. I would go for Android.

I agree. Android seems to be the platform that has the most potential. Plus, since it’s open source, manufacturers don’t have to spend for the OS license, so it would be in their interest to use and develop the platform.

The Hero is just one of the 2nd generation of Android devices and already it’s very compelling. It’ll be exciting to see how this platform evolves going forward.

But then the iPhone does have it’s fanboys, so it may need some more time to overcome them.

By the way, this is coming from a devout Windows Mobile user…

I’m not sure I agree with the Android view.

I’ll set my stall out. I’m an iPhone user, but definitely not an Apple fanboy (yet!)
I’m also a long time Palm user (still have my Centro) and have dabbled in WM and Symbian, but not Android.

I think Andoid will make huge gains, but it’s still starting from way at the back of the grid, and in 12 months I can’t see it becoming the dominant force (happy to come back in Aug 10 and be proved wrong). I think the iPhone base will continue to grow and will be the one that’s right up there, but you can’t take away the volume of users on Symbian and WM in a hurry.

I think the momentum behind the iPhone is huge and it will continue to be seen as the pace-setter.

Yes, there are some better devices starting to appear in the wake of the iPhone’s arrival, but none of them yet offers the complete package that most consumers are looking for.

With the iPhone, the device itself is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface lies the entire iTunes and iPod ecosystem – the App Store, music, TV shows, movie purchases and rentals, podcasts, iTunes U, audiobooks, to say nothing of the myriad of dedicated accessory makers. Gaming is so big on the iPhone that it almost deserves a store all of its own.

Then there are the kids – the ones who are toting are currently toting iPod Touches alongside their DSi’s How many of them are going to migrate to an iPhone when their finances allow?

When you combine the above with the iconic status of the iPhone, the Apple brand, Apple’s continued marketing prowess and its retail presence in the US, the challenge facing other OSes/manufacturers is formidable.

And we haven’t even begin to speak of the hardware, software and design expertise that resides in Cupertino.

Does that mean that Apple will “dominate” the smartphone market over the next year? No, but it has a very strong set of cards to play.

Dominate what though? I’d suggest the iPhone will continue to dominate the media, Android will start to dominate the techy community and Symbian will probably dominate in terms of sheer number of devices running variants of the OS.

  5. sidthebad says:

    Exactly what Philippa said.
Android will be all over us like a rash in this sort of forum next year – the new coming of the iPhone fever we have had for a while. I can’t see sales of Android outstripping iPhone or symbian total numbers in the next 12 months. It’s too far back oin the grid, but it’ll be coming up fast!

Android will be prominant as well as the iPhone . I also see Windows fighting back . Whilst the iPhone does offer the entire Eco system it does come at a cost. That’s where Android will win. It’s open source . Cheaper and Google aren’t going to let it fail.

I am very impressed by the Hero.

  7. eccleshill says:

Symbian will still dominate in 12 months time – totally agree with Philippa above. What the situation will be in 5 years time, though – that’s another question altogether!

  8. vboelema says:

I’m with Philipa – Symbian is doing really well in the fast growing Asian markets, such as India and China.

The iPhone will continue to great in the consumer market.

    Android for techies.

Windows and Blackberry for business and Blackberry for those who crave email.

Symbian for average Joe Blogs and some enthusiasts. But it will still be on top methinks!

  9. jah says:

Android will overtake the iPhone in the media hype. Symbian will continue to sell as much as all 4 companies below them in the sales chart (as today).
