Palm letting staff go again?

prepCoolSmartphone is reporting that Palm is laying off staff in the US again, and some other site are speculating as to the reasons. If true, it could just be because Palm has dropped its Windows Mobile range. The Washington Post has chimed in with an article which doesn’t say a lot except that Pre sales appear to be faultering and a brief commentary on the Pre price drop. Does the Pre still interest you?

News round-up: TiVo for BB, dropped iPhone calls & no iTunes for webOS

news30TiVo for BlackBerry has been released and brings with it most of the functionality you will need. It is free and available from App World now. “With TiVo® for BlackBerry® smartphones you can wirelessly access your channel listings and program your favorite shows while on the go with the familiar TiVo look, feel and features that you’ve come to enjoy at home.”

Using an iPhone in New York? Well, if you are 30% of your calls may drop acccording to Gizmodo. “The Genius told Manoj that’s actually excellent compared to most people in the New York area, where a 30 percent dropped call rate is the average.”

Has Palm given up on iTunes? The latest webOS update does not allow the Pre to be synced with iTunes this time and I guess this could have been expected following the recent rebutal from the USB-IF.

Those of you who are jealous of the excellent Twitter implementation in Android can look forward to HTC Peep for HTC TouchFlo 3D. msmobiles has written up a lengthy piece describing it, and it looks very similar to that on the Hero.

QOTD: Windows Mobile?

qotd23Today’s question is from Philippa. With so many manufacturers jumping on the Android bandwagon, has Windows Mobile had its day? Personally I think not because HTC seems to be bringing Windows Mobile up to the same level and there could be a battle royal soon.

BugMe! for BlackBerry Review

BugMe! has long been a staple factor of many Palm OS and Windows Mobile smartphones and has now made its way to the BlackBerry platform. It is naturally a different beast to that seen on touch screen devices, but that should not necessarily be seen as a bad thing. The BlackBerry platform is dominated by simple usability and this is why some of us prefer it for organisation, and BugMe! has jumped onboard and fitted in quite nicely.

Rather than review every little aspect of how it works, I will simply demonstrate how easy it is to create a note.

Step 1

bug1

Click ‘Make A New Note’ at the top and enter a title and details of the note.

Step 2

bug2

Set an alarm if you so desire.

Step 3

bug3

It will now be populated in the main screen.

Can it get any easier than that? No…

It all sound quite basic so far and it deliberately is, but there are some background features which make BugMe! one of those apps which could find a place on any BlackBerry. You can create notes from emails by tapping the ‘Add BugMe! Note’ menu option and do the same from text messages, tasks and appointments. This enables you to quickly capture information that is important to you with just one click. A BugMe! note can also be added to the calendar or tasks with one click and you can also email or SMS any notes. If you include a title in your note that will be displayed by default, but otherwise the first part of the note will be shown. I should also mention the keyboard shortcuts which are super quick- press ‘o’ to start a new note and ‘a’ to set an alarm in the note that you are in- it really could not be any quicker.

Notes can be marked as urgent or done and the keyboard shortcuts speed up the process even further. When you first look at BugMe! it feels basic and of little value, but a few minutes down the road and it feels essential. It is a perfectly implemented piece of software which integrates into the BlackBerry OS as though it was made by RIM, and at only $2.99 is great value as well.

Rating: 5/5 It won’t excite you, but it will speed up your note taking and general BlackBerry use a great deal. I really cannot think of a way to improve it.

BugMe! is available here for $2.99.

October: the month of the smartphone

phonesThings have been fairly quiet in the Smartphone world just recently with not so many major smartphones being released. October signals a change though and we can look forward to a barrage of new devices, most of which are quite enticing.

A quick look at Clove shows the following- Acer F1 on 6th October, Samsung Omnia Pro B7330 on 6th October, HTC Touch2 is arriving on, yes you guessed it, 6th October. Then we have the HTC Tattoo which is coming on 16th October which is the same date as O2 makes the Palm Pre available in the UK. More devices are rumoured to hit in October as well so it could be a very busy time.

Which of the above are you most looking forward to, and which would you most like to see reviewed on 247?

The i-mate saga rumbles on

imateJim Morrison from i-mate has been quoted as saying “This is the first time I have ever wanted to m*rder someone. Eight years of my life I put into this. Personally I have lost about $6m, cash,”

The entire saga is confusing with Michael Cavey stating on 247 earlier this week that “The information that I am linked with any new i-mate venture is very, very incorrect. I am not and will not be part of any “new” company moving forward and i am not associated with Hillfoot Limited, nor will I be. I am not sure where this information came from but any new venture has nothing to do with me. Rgds Michael.”

This followed another quote that originally included Michael’s name- “To safeguard the brand and assets of i-mate these have been acquired by a new company Hillfoot Limited which will continue to trade as i-mate with operations in Australia, Taiwan, the UK and USA. The new company will be led by Jim Morrison, Chief Executive who has committed to stay until normal trading is resumed and the financial infrastructure is established to take the business forward.. Other remaining senior management include John Bassachi, Director of Engineering, Majeed Salman, Director of Product Development.”

It is impossible to know what is really going on at this time, but I guess it will all come out in the wash…

LG offers $10,000 for an LG Chocolate

lg5LG is offering $10,000 if you can return an LG Chocolate with a specific serial number. There are 5 serial numbers in total and it is not known why LG wants them back, but the reasons will no doubt be conspired everywhere; military secrets, compromising pictures of their senior management? There you go, conspiracy started…

I guarantee that if you have a Chocolate at home, you ‘will’ have a quick look. Remember though that over 21 million have been sold so the word ‘haystack’ springs to mind.

Vodafone UK nabs the iPhone 3G & 3GS

3gVodafone UK has tweeted about the arrival of the iPhone 3G and 3GS to its network in early 2010. The link provided only goes to the main Voda site so there are no specific details on tariffs just yet.

This really does break the O2 agreement and could force it to spend more money on promoting the Palm Pre. I guess we can expect iPhone tariff prices to drop a little and maybe T-Mobile will be next? Yes, they definately will be.

webOS 1.2.0 released

webOS 1.2.0 has been made available by Palm as an OTA update. The list of changes is long, but here are some of the highlights-

Amazon MP3

Songs can now be purchased from Amazon MP3 over a phone network connection. A Wi-Fi connection is no longer required.

App Catalog

In preparation for e-commerce in the App Catalog, to purchase apps, you can enter credit card information by selecting Preferences & Accounts from the application menu in App Catalog. Credit card information is stored with the Palm profile, not on the phone. You can choose whether you need to enter their Palm profile password each time you make a purchase, or for the first purchase in any four-hour window.
If you want to reinstall a purchased application you previously deleted, you can open App Catalog, search for the application, tap the app name, and tap Download again for free. You do not need to pay for the application again.
A new Share button enables you to send a link to the app page in an email or text message. You can select whether to enter comments anonymously, using your first and last name, or using your first initial and last name.
You must accept an end-user license agreement to purchase apps.

And the list goes on and on and on…
