My next smartphone…

10 September 2009 by Shaun 11 Comments

9700My next smartphone will be the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Despite many small innovations over the past two years, RIM has managed to leave small holes in the makeup of each if its smartphones-

BlackBerry Bold: low system memory, low specified camera, trackball and very large

BlackBerry Curve 8900: no 3G, trackball

BlackBerry Storm: despite some positive early impressions, I personally need a physical keyboard

BlackBerry Curve 8520: budget phone with no 3G and a poor camera

The Bold 9700 seems to fill all of the gaps mentioned above; oodles of system memory, 3G, optical navigation, reasonable size, large battery and a decent camera. I can think of no better smartphone for my needs at this time. To be fair all of the above smartphones are great tools for communication, organisation and the failings are minimal, but as always I want the best available.

I am a BlackBerry boy at heart and always feel more organised, and seem to have more spare time, when I am using one each day, and the Bold 9700 ticks all of my boxes.

The optical navigation is preferable to a trackball for me because I have experienced the classic problem of a stuck trackball in the past and this knocked my confidence in the system. That’s not to say the optical setup is prefect because it is not always great in bright sunlight on the Curve 8520. I experienced this problem with the Samsung i780 and sadly it seems that RIM has fallen into the same trap. However, I would take it over a trackball any day.

So, the BlackBerry bandwagon continues for me. It may not be exciting, it may not do everything I need, but it is as near as I can get to the smartphone that does what I need at the moment.

I agree, Shaun, but I don’t know if the 9700 will be available on my carrier in the US. I looked at the 8900 again today & may go for it. On another note I was able to fix my trackball by the que tip & rubbing alcohol cleaning method. :-)

    “failings are minimal”

    Classic fanboyism

Funny, I always thought Shaun was a Psion boy at heart – err, no, sorry a Clie boy at h….well, possibly a Palm lad. But perhaps not. Maybe I’ve got him figured wrong. :)

I’m glad you’ve found yourself… again! But the site could get boring if you didn’t jump ship as much as you do. Maybe you could divide the year up between various mobile OS’s, and you could be a “fanboy” of each chosen OS at any given time of the year. Though that sounds like it lacks too much spontaneity…
