Palm letting staff go again?

prepCoolSmartphone is reporting that Palm is laying off staff in the US again, and some other site are speculating as to the reasons. If true, it could just be because Palm has dropped its Windows Mobile range. The Washington Post has chimed in with an article which doesn’t say a lot except that Pre sales appear to be faultering and a brief commentary on the Pre price drop. Does the Pre still interest you?

I do read some Palm Pre fora but the Pre is no longer on my shortlist. Palm is taking too much time for a European release. In the Netherlands fans are expecting a first quarter 2010 release…by then the Pre is one device next to a dozen of new WM devices, the Nokia N900, a couple of Android devices.
Next to that I’m reading to much posts about things the Pre still can’t do and should have been doing since the release.

Carel is right – they’ve just taken so long to release that they’ve missed the original excitement and probably missed some sales as a result. I suspect they couldn’t develop much quicker, so perhaps a later announcement would have been better!

Should have been out sooner, true. But the biggest thing holding it back is the ‘exclusive’ deals they signed. Can only get it in the UK on O2. Which means lost sales to all those who want it unlocked.

    Still interested, though.

I am interested as I think it’ll have a quality PIM for a touch screen phone. But short on funds now that I have just bought the UMID mBook (tiny XP Notebook).

Initially I was very excited, but as time has gone on and no release here in Europe my excitement has wavered. I find the Nokia N900 a far more interesting prospect. I ended up with a E71, which though old now, has been my favourite device in quite a few years. I’m hoping that Nokia will take their devices in a new and more exciting direction with the N900.

  6. Not sure here. Exclusivity has put me off too. I can’t put any other sim card into my iPhone, and while I took the bite this time, I don’t plan to do so again.
I support the locking argument for PAYG, but not for contract deals.

  7. Of course, they may release it supporting any sim card, but I’m doubtful.
