QOTD: Hanging on?

qotd22Are you still clinging to an obselete mobile operating system despite the new and wonderful smartphones being released all of the time? Many of you seem to be sticking with Palm OS and some still persevere with the wonderful Psion setup.

Kind of. I have a Centro which I fire up from time to time for some of my old Palm apps. Generally I stick to the iPhone though for 3g/wifi connectivity.

  2. Statto says:

Only as a backup, and like Philippa it’s a Palm Centro

  3. Matt King says:

I certainly am. Since my HTC Touch packed up I’ve been working with my TX and a motorola V3! Desperately waiting for the Pre to come out. I keep getting tempted by the iPhone but Apple keep managing to turn my off again with their constant bad treatment of developers.

No, once I ditch something I try not look back. Clingling to the past prevents you from seeing and exploiting opportunites in the present and future, and sticking to your comfort zone is self-limiting.

I’m not saying that some of these older devices didn’t do some things pretty well, but it’s time to move on.

  5. Austin says:

Palme Centro for me at the moment. Looking at a Palm Pre or Palm Pixi as my next upgrade.

  6. vboelema says:

Every now and then I use my Palm TX to watch a video on the go. Mainly because it has a large high res screen.

I use Symbian s60, and I’ve read a fair few comments of people claiming it’s obsolete and outdated… does that count?
    ;-) )

After nearly 6 years still with my faithful T3 (‘as new’ replacement bought on Ebay this year, original still working) along with Sony Ericsson C905 (phone camera quality important to me).

Waiting for the Pre in the UK and thinking seriously about it.

Listen to yourselves….bunch of traitors to the Palm cause!! Moi, I still use a LifeDrive on a daily basis. Fantastic screen, superb battery life, nice and chunky (?) and miles better than any of those whiffy Sony PDAs.

  9. cliefan says:

    Guilty…
Still running on a sony th55 until I can get my hands on a pre. (bucketloads of legacy software)
Also still refer to my old psion mx5. When it comes to joining the dots nothing yet beats it: fully integrated pim suite, built in SQL compliant database system, a built in programming environment with an api that let you do what you wanted with any of the above… alright, I’ll just get a room…

  10. DavidGreen says:

I abandoned my HTC Touch, and purchased a brand new Palm Centro, and returned to Palm OS after torturing myself for about a year on Windows Mobile 6.

I just got fed up with, slow CPU, poor OS operation, appalling PIM, poor screen resolution, but “the straw that broke the camel’s back” was the forth time the Windows Vista Mobile Synch application lost the phone’s profile and re-initialised the phone and spent about 4 hours resynching all the data out of Outlook back into the PIM databases on the phone, then having to restore other application databases, especially SplashID, which for the 4th time ended up getting into a big mess with anything from data records being duplicated 2 to 4 times.

So when the Centro arrived in the mail, I retired the Touch, and restored all my applications from the Palm T5 is used before the Touch, including the much missed (Pimlico) DateBk6.

Not surprisingly, after 6 months of use, not 1 synch error. In the future, I’ll look at a Pre, or an Android unit. And I wont touch iPhone until it becomes a real smartphone (ie. fully customisable).

I still use my TX for reading each night before going to sleep. I also use it to take notes for Sunday sermons. But that’s pretty much it…

  12. tonyk says:

Like vboelema I’m at home with Symbian at the moment and though much older than some OSes I don’t regard as obsolete. Keeping an eye on things though, particularly Android devices.

I still make use of Palm OS (my Palm TT, Zires etc). I also air an old Navman Pocket PC running WM v4 as it’s handy for all sorts of mapping apps… recently installed a new battery in it too.

Oh and my Psions get occasional use when I need something with a smaller keyboard than my Eee, or something with a long battery life to take notes!

“and sticking to your comfort zone is self-limiting”

    You should try Android then:)

Showed my Revo Plus to a colleague with a HTC Hero – he was very impressed with its the speed and responsiveness. Had no idea PIMs could do what the Psion Agenda does. My only criteria for choosing technology is for personal productivity as I have mentioned before, good PIM is a minority requirement and does depend on h/w and s/w integration. Met amother colleague today with a HTC HD – he still uses a small notebook for making lists of To Dos as the HTC is not optimised for such boring tasks. Most modern devices seem to be expenesive ‘eye candy’!

  15. Jason Muhammad says:

I love my Palm Centro! I tried the Pre and took it back…maybe when WebOS has at least the same PIMs as PalmOS and they work as well or better.

The Pixie with WebOS…although the name is a bit Disney for me, would be nice except it’s vaporware right now and still: Where’s the Apps? I may look at Android next if I find a good form factor. HTC Hero is nice but I want a real keyboard.

    Windows Mobile…eh, probably not.

    Apple: no thanks.

    Symbian: no thanks.

    RIM: Not attractive right now.

I’m not into novelty for novelty’s sake, either.
