QOTD: One app?

qotd22Which third party mobile app is more important for you than any other? I would go for Ascendo Money because it is such a complete application and does so much for me.

    Copilot 8 for obvious reasons.

I’d have to say it’s a tie between Resco File Explorer and Coreplayer. As great as these 2 apps are, their functionality should really be included in the device right out of the box.

    eWallet

I’ve got too many passwords, PINs, serial numbers etc for my ageing memory to cope with

At the moment it’s a tie between Omnifocus and WriteRoom.

Omnifocus is just an incredible project/task manager. I don’t use all its bells and whistles, and I’m not into GTD, but it does a great job of keeping track of my routine chores and tasks. Flexible repeats, both start and due dates, drag and drop reprioritization, and OTA syncing are the highlights for me. The way I’m using it, it feels like using Palm OS’s built-in task app on steroids.

I do an awful lot of writing on my iPhone. Until now, that was mainly done in the built-in Notes app, but I now prefer WriteRoom because it offers full-screen viewing/editing and syncs wirelessly with a Google-hosted web-version. (It’s by the same developer who produced WriteRoom for the Mac, Shaun, and it mimics the desktop app’s look and feel.)

The most important 3rd party on my Symbian phone is DataSafe (http://www.neilsands.plus.com/datasafe). Other than that most days I get by perfectly fine with the ‘built-in’ apps.

When I recently travelled abroad I found SlovoEd translation tool (www.slovoed.com) and UTM Data GPS software (utmdata.blogspot.com) equally essential.

Password Plus, or such similar applications, like Statto, I have far too many PINs and passwords to remember, especially for work.

Difficult, iDisk is not technically a third party app but it is not installed as standard. That’s very useful. Overall Evernote is probably my most useful app however, thanks to cloud sync with my desktop. Superb.

Great question. It made me really look at my apps. Which do I really use/need.
Docs to go is prob number 1 for me in terms of work docs that I constantly refer to. But I could live without it.
Copilot – used lots but I could just use my old tomtom unit.
Appigo todo – used lots but I’d manage without it.
My essential apps are the built in ones. Contacts/calendar/safari/iPod. Mmmmm.

That’s a tough one. Symbian comes fairly complete in terms of built in apps. I have a few thing I prefer to use instead of the built in ones E.g. Handycalendar, Operamini, Google maps…

If I could only choose one, I guess I’d go for Handycalendar (since it’s the app I use the most along with Operamini.)

    eWallet

also PocketBreeze 5.5 beta, but that project is now dead in the water as MS in the new Marketplace do not allow today screen plugins.. :-(

Sid’s post above Great question. It made me really look at my apps. Which do I really use/need made me think.

I’ve got 58 apps on my iPhone, including the built in ones, and probably about another dozen loitering on iTunes that no longer sync/use. And I don’t have pointless “fart” apps in that lot (well maybe just a couple of pojntless ones, but definitely no fart apps)

    58. That’s ludicrous. I’ve got no-where near that on my PC. Why do I need them on my phone?

I reckon (and this is just a guess) that there are close on 30 of those I haven’t used in anger in the last month or more, and a couple I’ve never used (Stocks, iTunes)

  12. lazyboy says:

I’ve got lots that I rarely use, and some which are archived on my desktop because they’ve been superseded. On my iPhone currently, I have more than 80 apps, more than half of which are games.

@Statto – funnily enough, I use the stocks app and iTunes virtually everyday.

Many of the apps are there for a specific purpose; they aren’t needed everyday, but they’re there for the odd occasion when I do. For example, I have an app for Chipotle Mexican Grill – a really good chain of quick, fresh and healthy Mexican food. I can quickly find the nearest restaurant, check what’s on the menu, and place an online order all from within the app. (Check it out when you’re in Florida!)

  13. Shaun says:

I have far more apps in iTunes than on my iPhone. I only use 2 or 3 now and then, but must admit that the iPhone tends to be only used by the kids to play games and for when I have iPhone related freelance work these days. I haven’t used it properly for weeks and strangely don’t miss it.

  14. lazyboy says:

Not as much as I don’t miss my BlackBerry,.. ;)

  15. Shaun says:

I only mentioned that I am not using it. No need to ‘compete’ ;)

  16. lazyboy says:

    I can’t help it.

  17. vboelema says:

I started listing the apps I use daily, weekly and the ones I use from time to time. And to be honest, unless they’re built in, if I don’t use the app, I loose the app (such a cliche I know!)
I’ve been in the game long enough to know HOW I use my phone. So I don’t tend to experiment so much with apps, and I only put on what I need.

I also tend to use what’s there. For example, I use Quickoffice to store my personal info, but I have Crypto to encrypt that plus any other files I see fit. I prefer that to just using ONE single app that encrypt personal data, but does nothing else.

I prefer to go online to use Facebook, for example, rather than to download one app that’s suppose to do Facebook for me.

I prefer to make a spreadsheet to track my finance, than to use a special app.

I would prefer to go online to find my nearest favourite take away and to order food as opposed to installing a special app just to do that one single thing.

But the great thing is that it’s all there for whoever wants to do it their way. Yet your app count could quicky add up if you use one app to do one thing.

    Finished – sorry…

@ lazyboy Check it out when you’re in Florida!

I will! Only 196 days, 10 hours and 5 minutes before we go according to my rarely used “Countdown” app ! :-)

  19. gavinfabl says:

    @ lazyboy only 40 games. You’re slacking mate ;)
