After months of not feeling well I well I will finally get my nose sorted out with a Septoplasty procedure and will hopefully end up with something like you see in the picture, with more skin around the nose:)

Apple Soars After Mac and IPhones Sales Top Estimates
Bloomberg is reporting on the continued escalating sales figures for the iPhone which have risen to 7.4 million in the last quarter. The only dark spot was a reduction in iPod sales, but even that can be put against rising sales of the iPhone which does directly compete against the iPod range.
There are now two ways this could go which will probably result in the same continued rise or static sales performance. Firstly, the iPhone will soon be available on many more carriers throughout Europe and this will increase sales. Secondly, Android will continue to develop and be offered in many more variations by multiple manufacturers. I personally think Apple needs to offer more than one iPhone model within the next 6 months to continue this rate of expansion. Thanks to Trevor for the link.

Browse webOS apps at palm.com
Palm has added a page which lets you browse the available webOS apps by category. Screenshots and summaries are included and hopefully the design will have to change soon if the apps become more plentiful.
“Applications designed for the Palm® webOS™ platform make your phone more powerful, more useful, and more fun. And many take advantage of the Palm Synergy™ feature, allowing you to do more with just a touch. Automatically add an event date to your calendar. Share location information in one step. Unlocked Android Google phone in the works?
Rumours abound that Google is currently working with a handset maker to sell a Google branded Android handset. There’s more at unwired view, but the fact that it may not be sold via network operators is possibly the bigger story. This simply does not happen and could signal a shift in the market. I doubt it will have a big impact, but it could make operators think twice about the exclusive phone deals that have been hitting ever since the iPhone was first released. I like the iPhone, but I hate the exclusivity arrangements that Apple kicked off because we in Europe prefer a lot more choice.

The Mobile Web is Dead
jkOnTheRun is running a great story about the Mobile Web and rightly proclaiming it to be dead. They are right in what they say and it won’t be long before the compromise web solutions from the likes of BlackBerry will be crucial factors in purchasing decisions.
“In the beginning, there was the web. It was largely only accessible to us at work, through giant computers. Then the web spilled over to the home, and it was the same web as the work web. We learned to expect the web to be the same, no matter where we accessed it, which was limited to work and the home.
Then the web started spilling over onto our mobile devices, mostly the phone. The experience was terrible, as the mobile web in the beginning was limited to the technology of the time. Slow connections, tiny screens with horrible interfaces; the mobile web sucked. Companies dealt with these limits by designing mobile web sites, with terrible content and even worse interfaces. These extremely limited web sites, coupled with the limited mobile phone capabilities, made for a web experience that shared nothing with the “real” web…”
Palm Pre available SIM free in UK
I saw some news on the web about expansys carrying the Pre SIM free, but did not expect to get an email promoting it as well. It appears as though it really will be available within the next few days for £499.99. I wonder what Palm and O2 think about this?
“Please note: when you start this unit for the first time, you can select your language from English, German, Spanish, French or Italian. The QWERTZ keypad is the same as a QWERTY keypad, the only difference is the Z and Y locations are swapped around.
These units are factory unlocked and work on any UK network. The packaging has some O2 branding but the device is purely Palm-branded. A full English manual can be downloaded here.
Meet Palm Pre, a phone that’s always thinking ahead to make your life easier. Pre pulls your different online calendars into one view, bringing you the information you want without having to search for it. Pre links your contacts from different sources, giving you one place to find what you need. And Pre delivers incoming messages1 and notifications in an intuitively subtle way, letting you react or respond however you want. People, events, information that matters. With Palm Pre, it’ll come to you.”
QOTD: The look?
Would you buy a smartphone if it was ugly, but had specifications and usability which was above its peers? I would like to say I would, but I am not so sure- call me shallow…
Reload Software 552
As I write this my BlackBerry Curve 8520 is sitting on my desk displaying the dreaded ‘Reload Software 552’ error. This means that it is dead. I will now need to reload my OS and restore my latest backup, which was fortunately undertaken only 2 days ago. The problem with the BlackBerry, which I said was an advantage a couple of weeks ago, is that it does not sync to any Cloud type service and thus I am having to rely on what is saved to my desktop at home. It is worrying because I have LOTS of relevant information on it and I am expecting to lose some; my financial information may not be up to date, by BB Messenger chats could be lost and a whole lot more…
I talk about backing up data a lot and always offer it as the most important thing any smartphone owner can do, but like every hypocrite in the world I am not so good at following my own advice. The question is though, how far do you go to ensure your data is backed up and how do you strike a balance between just using a device and constantly fiddling to make sure your data is secure. I still believe that a smartphone with a long battery life is hugely advantageous and don’t tend to agree that a device you have to charge each day is ‘not a problem’. However, phones like the iPhone do make the backup of data easier than you can do on the BlackBerry- in theory they both work the same; you connect your phone to a desktop and back it up, but the BB solution is not as reliable as I subsequently found out.
2 hours later…
None of my recent backups worked and there are none on my PC! Not one which means my last backup is over a month old. This little story has once again reminded me to backup my information every two days at a minimum, and I mean all information, and I will try to learn from it. Sadly I have been through this a few times and never did learn.
How about you? Do you regularly backup ‘all’ of your smartphone data?
UPDATE: In the end BBSAK did the trick for me and I got all of my data back and removed the offending app. The first thing I did was a proper backup! Thanks to Tom for saving the day…
The new unjailbreakable 3GS can be jailbroken
It seems as though the new iPhone 3GSs which have started shipping can be jailbroken, but with a major caveat. From iPhone Central- ““It’s not going to be impossible to jailbreak even if the exploit we used is gone,” explained McDonald. In fact, it turns out the current tools still work with the new stock of 3GS phones, though there is one major caveat that may make jailbreaking impractical for the time being. Without the use of the “24kpwn” exploit used in previous models, a jailbroken 3GS will only boot after being turned off while tethered to a computer. That means if you are away from home and your phone runs out of power, you can only turn it back on by plugging the device in to a computer, not a wall socket. It also means that you’re out of luck until you get home if you experience a crash that requires a reboot (which, regrettably does happen every once in a while- especially on a hacked phone)…”

BlackBerry OS 5.0 downloads for Bold, 8900 and the rest
BlackBerry 5.0 OS downloads have been swimming around the net for a while now and BlackBerry Cool has bundled them all together so you can try one on your device. The advantages are marginal at this stage and I will personally hold off for the official release.
“Now that the new BlackBerry Messenger is out, it’s worth taking the time to put some BlackBerry OS 5 downloads in one spot. Many of the leaked versions of OS 5 have been missing the new BBM, but now that it’s released, you may want to get OS 5 for your device and have the whole package.
Keep in mind these are leaked OS links and the official version is much safer for your BlackBerry. We’re putting these links here so you can preview what will soon be officially released for your device. The official release of OS 5 features…”

Is Palm lying in its recent adverts?
msmobiles ran a story over the weekend accusing Palm of lying in its recent Palm Pre adverts, namely about the multi-tasking ability. I thought the article was a bit protective of Windows Mobile until I saw the ad myself on Sunday. It is highly suggestive that the Pre is the only phone that can do multi-tasking and I think there is reason to be annoyed about it. Have you seen the advert yet and what do you think?
“On photo above you can see a snapshot from a TV commercial that Palm is running now in UK. In this commercial Palm claims that Palm Pre is the only phone with multi-tasking – “multiple applications at the same time”. Obviously it is a lie, as also Windows Mobile powered smartphones support multi-tasking and ability to run multiple apps at the same time. While Palm wants to differentiate itself from iPhone that cannot run “multiple applications at the same time”, it misses the fact that Windows Mobile can do it.”

Nokia N900 size comparison
Some size comparison pics of the N900 have been posted at CJ’s Nokia E65 Blog and it looks quite big when compared to an early iPhone and an N95. Could still be a great device, but is slightly chunkier than I expected.
