I promised a review of the Palm Pre to Shaun this week, but have held off. Mainly because there’s a mountain of reviews already out there that tell you roughly the same thing. I’m therefore preparing something much more detailed, different, and analytical.
As part of this, could I ask – is there anything any of you want to know, that perhaps hasn’t been answered yet. You’ve thought about getting one, but somethings stopping you? Maybe you’ve some concerns not quite so clear in other reviews?
Please drop a comment, and I’ll try and include everything I can. Included is things such as a real depth test of the battery life under conditions, compared to the iPhone. Also, I plan to give a good look at “Classic” – the Palm OS emulator, that if O2 pushes out the 1.2 patch, I’ll be able to test the hotsync with, and let you know whether you can truly run datebk6 properly (There’s alarm “integration” btw…)
All comments welcome as always.

Peter,
I see you intend to test classic…
The idiots at the O2 shop yesterday tried to tell me classic wasn’t available in the uk!
I you do run it up I would dearly lik to no if zipcad pro runs. This is a dealbreaker for me but my local O2 store were no help whatsoever.
Many thanks.
Steve
One thing I’d be interested in is how much control you have over syncing/merging multiple accounts. Could I only sync contacts with google but sync calendar with google and palm for example? I’m sure I read about facebook integration with contacts, I really wouldn’t want to add these as I’d have duplicate and partial entries.
Is there any desktop backup and syncing?
I am old fashioned but I don’t like the idea of all my stuff being on the web or the cloud as they call it.
Thanks.
Is the build quality as bad as some reviews say?
I guess I’d like to know what the keyboard is like after having spent some time with it. People say it’s bad, but personally, it always takes me a while to get used to a new keyboard/input method, and it takes a while before I can judge whether it works for me or not. Can you see this as you main device? Do you think you’ll stick with it for a while, or is it just a stocking filler?
How about the ‘Englification’ of the Pre? In other words, has the $ sign been replaced with a £ sign on the H key? Do all the date and time formats work as we would expect in the UK?
Thanks everyone, remember to check on Monday morning
ps – i’m liking the keyboard myself, i have thin fingers, but I’ll cover that in more detail (i’m picking a few colleagues / friends to test it with too)
I think a keyboard comparison would be good – as long as its equal to or better than the Centro’s then I’ll be happy. If its as good as the Treo 650′s I’ll be even happier!
I’m also interested in the build quality, particularly how the slider stands up to long term use.
I played with a Pre in an O2 store and was a bit unimpressed with the slider. The action wasn’t as ‘positive’ as most other slider phones and more worryingly the screen seemed to twist from side to side.
I was all set to buy a Pre last Saturday but seeing the slider has put me off a bit.
I’d be grateful for comments on how easy/hard it is to use the PIM functions for day-to-day personal productivity stuff. For example, how quick is it to set up a new task item or edit a diary entry?
Philippa, multiple contacts can be linked to form one contact. It’s quite nifty.
I’d like a more indepth look at the email app. I’m scared to link it to my main emails as there are a distinct lack of options for email accounts and I’m scared it’ll stop emails getting to my desktop client if the palm app gets them first.
