Smartphone Market Update: Apple gaining fast

10 October 2009 by Shaun One Comment

shareThe latest smartphone market update from Canalys shows a huge jump in market share for Apple, from 2.1% to 13.7%, and the others are remaining quite steady. Well, except for Microsoft whose share is dropping like a stone at the moment. RIM is up again by 4.2% and Nokia is down by 1.2% which is a marginal fall. Android is at 2.8% from zero the year before so it is starting to move, but what will happen over the next year?

Apple will most likely benefit from going down the multiple carrier route in the short term, but I do see Android being the big mover over the next year or two. Windows Mobile will do well to keep its current position and Nokia could gain some traction with Maemo over the next year.

Personally I think that in two years time the graph will be dominated by BlackBerry, Maemo, Android and Apple with Windows Mobile and Symbian struggling to capture large swathes of this every growing market.

There is a limit to what Apple can achieve with one form factor. Also, Android will catch-up very fast in the next 6 months. Just witness the popularity of the Hero.
