News round-up: Nokia buying Palm, webOS 1.3, TeleNav, Air Tennis

newsRumours are spreading around the net like wildfire that Nokia is considering purchasing Palm. They seem to have started from very little, but this has not stopped Palms share price taking a jump because of the news.

webOS 1.3.1 is available now from Palm for, I believe, just Sprint users. There are numerous changes, most of which are minor, and according to engadget there are no great speed increases and iTunes cannot spot the Pre. Maybe Palm has finally given up that particular battle?

BlackBerry Bold 9700 users can now take advantage of TeleNav GPS Navigator and this is without doubt the best option available at this time. Check out this video which demos the software, although the screen is a little hard to see.

Air Tennis attempts to bring the Wii style of tennis play to the iPhone and by most accounts largely succeeds. There is a video demonstrating the game here, and I think I am in love with the lady presenting it…

Microsoft has released a new version of Marketplace. As msmobiles points out, there are no change details and you really have no choice but to install it.

I knew that old Treo 650 would come in handy one day. Some clever hackers have managed to boot Android onto a 650 and although it is just a demo it shows how efficient the OS is. More details here.

I guess Nokia and Palm are a good fit. Good hardware from Nokia with poor OS. Good OS from Palm with poor hardware.

Rumours of Nokia buying Palm have been periodically flying around for years. Didn’t happen in the past & I don’t think it’ll happen any time soon.

I admit it is in fact a big business this fusion, but for some years we’ve heard a few things here and there (that’s called rumours) but Nokia was OK, Palm was OK, then not. Presently, Nokia is not so OK (looking for a new OS) and Palm is not OK (looking for good harwdare and trying to increase survival rate ;) ). So I believe now is the time to advance more seriously. I totally agree with Jennifer’s comments and I believe Nokia devices and services with PalmWebOS would be a fantastic thing to have. Along with that it would allow Nokia to establish deeper into the American market and Palm would do the same in the European market. So… just weight things carefully and they could become one big giant!
