QOTD: Mobile viruses?

qotd27Do you take any precautions against the perceived threat of viruses to smartphones? I take none at all because I perceive there to be no threat…

Up and down

brainA friend of mine takes the process of buying a new piece of electronic equipment to the extreme. The research he undertook when buying a new television recently was akin to the amount of time that must have been spent planning the build of the Hoover Dam.  Every brand was analysed, every last technical detail was compared and once the decision had been made it was time to see where he could buy it for the best price. Ignore the fact that once received it was already out of date because he took so long- he was happy.

Deciding what smartphone to buy is never an easy process, but I dread to think how my friend would cope if he wanted more than a normal mobile phone. There are so many aspects to a smartphone that make the purchasing difficult that it soon becomes bewildering if you take it to the limit.

Brand- which make of smartphone gives you the reassurance that it will last and have good customer support?

Design- it doesn’t have to be super cool, but it should not be ugly.

Specifications- do I need GPS? Wi-Fi? 3G? A big screen? A hardware keyboard? And so the list goes on…

What carrier should I choose? Which one has the best coverage in my area? Which has the best price? The best customer service? Why are there 20,000 different tariffs available from each provider?

Despite all of the above, and ignoring the fact that most of us would not consider all of these factors, you ultimately buy a smartphone because your gut tells you to. The purchase of a phone is an emotional experience and the manufacturers have managed to make it so. We all live with problems on our phones because we like the one we have and so none of the above really matters.

Silverlight coming to the iPhone

silverlightIt seems as though Silverlight is coming to the iPhone. Lots of questions have been posed at betanews as to how this has happened, but let’s not complain too much.

“It was an impressive demonstration, once they got it working: H.264 video streaming wirelessly (and slowly, at least during the caching sequence) using Microsoft’s Silverlight video streaming, to an Apple iPhone. It’s all the more impressive when you realize that Flash video still has not made its way (permanently) to the iPhone, not for any technical reasons we know of…simply because Apple wants to control the video channel for streaming media to its devices.

And yet here it is, a Microsoft stream. You’d think Apple would have stood firm against Microsoft at least as aggressively as it has against Adobe, if not more so. How did this happen? We asked Microsoft User Experience Platform Manager Brian Goldfarb last week at PDC 2009, and the answer was a huge surprise…followed by some caveats. But it contained these four amazing words: “We worked with Apple.”

Want more Pre apps? Use Meta-Doctor

441Pre Central has posted details of how European users can get access to the full 441 Palm Pre apps on their phones. It needs a hack, but if you are impatient it is probably worth the risk.

“Through a strange twist of fate and a bit of hacking, some European Pre users aren’t getting the short end of the app stick anymore. While the vast majority of Pre owners on O2 and Movistar are still only going to see less than a hundred apps, it turns out that those that have used the WebOS Internals Meta-Doctor to bypass the activation process for O2 are now getting access to the full App Catalog, which as of today totals to 441 apps.

Right now the App Catalog appears to still be noticing where the Pre is, as those outside the US still cannot purchase and download paid apps, though those select few can at least see them. It’s a weird glitch, but an interesting one nonetheless as these Pre phones could be considered “without region,” but the App Catalog still recognizes that they are not in the United States region, and thus shouldn’t be allowed to download paid applications.”

Windows Mobile 6.5 Second Edition

65sWindows Mobile 6.5 Second Edition is becoming more real by the day and either smacks of desperation by Microsoft or is a clever more. More at the unwired.

“According to the representative, “Windows Mobile 6.5.1″ or “Windows Mobile 6.5 Second Edition” is somewhat real, the leaked new UI is indeed from Microsoft, and not from one of the many ODMs. However the name 6.5.1 is a rumored name from the forums only. According to mopocket’s info, the new UI wasn’t necessarily designed to be the next version of Windows Mobile, however it’s said to be a proposed solution to the problem of using Windows Mobile with capacitive touchscreens.

Since Windows Mobile was never designed to feature capacitive displays (the basic user interface design, which never changed, goes back to the Pocket PC from 2000) but resistive displays only. However, with new devices being proposed to use capacitive touchscreens, Microsoft seemed to realize that there’s problem with the current user interface design and therefore Microsoft decided to work on an overhauled “Windows Mobile 6.5.1″/”Windows Mobile 6.5 Second Edition” UI.”

News round-up: Skater Nation, DynaInk & Facebook

newsFirstly, happy Thanksgiving to all of our American readers. Hope you have a great day and are spending it with the people you want to be with.

Gameloft has released Skater Nation for the iPhone which is now available for $6.99 / £3.99 and which looks like yet another winner. On the subject of Gameloft, it is also having a Thanksgiving sale and offering Castle of Magic, Real Tennis 2009, Blades of Fury, Terminator Salvation, Brothers in Arms – Hour of Heroes and Shrek Kart for only $0.99 / £0.59 for the next few days. Fill your boots!

The wonderfully important BlackBerry Master Control Program has been updated to v0.9.2.0 which adds lots of technical changes I don’t understand, but it is nice to have it installed just in case the worst happens.

It’s not just the iPhone that gets the clever drawing apps. Take a look at DynaInk for Windows Mobile and especially the demonstration video- that is seriously impressive!

UK readers can take advantage of the Vodafone Free Mobile Internet Friday which is happening tomorrow. Pay as you go and contract customers can try the service and I guess the plan is to tempt them into data bundles. Clever marketing if you ask me.

The official Facebook application has been released for the Nokia E71 and E72. It is fully featured and you can get more details and screenshots here.

A Made Simple for webOS guide book has been added to the App Catalog and will be useful for those who can’t work out one of the easiest smartphone operating systems available today. No offence intended…:)

Getting Started Disc

The Samsung Omnia Pro B7330 Pro Scala, I will just call it the B7330 from now on, is a new hardware keyboarded Windows Mobile Standard phone which follows the path blazed by the HTC Snap and others of this form. This is a form factor loved by millions across the globe and one which will grab few headlines, yet will appeal for a large sector of the smartphone market.

It is a solid unit which feels well built and which has a slab like feel, but without the weight. At only 109 grams it is very light and feels just right in the hand. It is like a BlackBerry Bold 9700, but slightly longer and with a square screen and this is where its appeal may lie. Those who prefer this form factor, but want to steer away from the BlackBerry OS will turn to this in the hope that it offers an experience which is flexible and powerful in one small unit. Specifications wise the list if impressive with 6GB of memory, HSPA, Windows Mobile 6.5 Standard, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and a 3.2 Megapixel camera the highlights in a fairly complete setup. There is a lot in a small space on the B7330 and you won’t be found wanting for flexibility.

b72Despite the good build quality the covering is plastic and has an air of the Treo Pro about it. Of course it is much slimmer and the keyboard is better, but a different covering would be less prone to fingerprints and may offer a more professional feel to the unit. The keyboard is good, but not great with most keys placed as you would wish. The placements are correct, but somehow don’t feel quite right when you first use them. However, within a few minutes I was typing away quite easily and would rate it as one of the best next to the BlackBerry devices.

The main navigation button sticks out markedly on the front and dominates the design. It works very well and suits thumb use perfectly, but is in contrast to the rest of the look on the front. It could be more subtle. The volume keys are top left, sensible placement, and also on the left is the sync/charge port which is also the headphone socket. Sadly no 3.5mm headphone jack, but the port is standard which enables lots of accessories to be compatible in the future. On the right-hand side is the camera button and microSD slot which is neatly covered for extra protection. All in all the hardware and design on the B7330 are a triumph, but one that will appeal to the type of user who is looking for functionality rather than excitement.

My initial impressions of performance are positive with only the occasional lag present when performing multiple tasks. I need to look into the processor specs more, but it seems to be just about up to the job and the inclusion of 6GB of internal memory is a bonus not often seen in smartphones of this type. Throw in a 32GB microSD card and you will have all the space you need for documents, music, video etc. etc.

The screen is bright and capacious for a smartphone of this form and this should be expected when you consider the lack of touch functionality. The 320 x 320 display is non-standard and won’t be compatible with all third party apps, but a good number do support this resolution so you should not be left out in the cold for extra software.

On Monday I will be looking at the general performance and the way it performs during the busiest of days. The potential is there, but will it succeed and be worth the asking price?

Free review devices and their influence

hd2msmobiles has published an article entitled HTC HD2 news review – on sale at carriers, problems with camera, positive reviews from freebie-getters and it includes comments like-

“several online writers are publishing overly positive reviews of HTC HD2, most of these writers using iPhone as their primary cellphone and one could wonder why? Well: they got “keeper” (not loaner) units of HTC HD2 from HTC for free. Unfortunately in most of these reviews this fact is not mentioned, so if you see overly positive review of HTC HD2 on the Internet you should ask the reviewer in comments whether she/he got the HD2 as freebie!” and-

“Disclaimer: we asked HTC to get HTC HD2 as freebie (because we have higher traffic and ranking than some sites that got HTC HD2 for free), but HTC has refused. We didn’t get it even as a loaner for review, but if this is a price that we have to pay for telling how it is, so be it.”

I haven’t linked to this particular article.

Now, I don’t want to start an online war here, but this article is highly subjective and could discredit many other sites who have posted genuinely honest reviews of the HTC HD2 and other smartphones in the past. It also sounds bitter and not well thought out, but I am mostly concerned about the impression it could give it. Saying that ‘we tell it how it is’ because they had to purchase a device is nonsense and no credible news resource would be influenced by the fact that the phone is a freebie.

I have never personally received a free phone for review and will always say it as it is, but even if I did get one for free it would make no difference to how I review it. To suggest otherwise, on the basis that some may have missed the HD2 camera problem, is grasping at straws and goes against an online community of websites which on the whole support each other through thick and thin.

The irony of all this is that PDA-247 is not a pal of the big manufacturers either, but I am not going to cry about it and proclaim us to be the only source of truth in the smartphone world.
