Official eBay app for BlackBerry now available (for some)
You can now download the official BlackBerry eBay app for free from App World, although it may be a bit hit and miss depending on where you live and what carrier you are on. It looks good from the screenshots and will hopefully grow into a useful app which will ensure you don’t miss important auctions wherever you are. Be aware that this is a beta title at the moment.

Need for Speed on the Palm Pre. If true, it’s super cool!
PIC has posted details of a video showing Need for Speed running on a Palm Pre. It looks fantastic, but we don’t have a guarantee that it is not a hoax. Let’s hope this is indeed true. Here’s how it looks-

BlackBerry Optical Trackpad problems: sunshine and fluorescent lighting
The new optical trackpad on the BlackBerry Curve 8520 and Bold 9700 is a joy to use all of the time, but I have had issues in bright sunlight where it can become unresponsive and difficult to use. Fortunately, or not so, I live in the UK and sunshine is a rarity so it happens rarely.
However, I have discovered a new problem which I am trying to confirm. When I am in an area with fluorescent lighting the screen continually shuts off when I touch the trackpad. It happened the other day and I thought nothing of it, but today it re-occurred when in a car park with harsh lighting. In work it is not a problem because the lighting is soft, but this has happened twice in the past week in similar areas of lighting so I will experiment more. Anyone else having these problems?
In the real world it is barely more than a minor inconvenience, but there are some strange things happening with this new optical navigation setup.

Space Ace for BlackBerry has been reduced to only $1.50 in today’s first Deal of the Day. A nice bit of retro fun to pass a few minutes- “An old school space shoot-em-up with lots of fast action

With each new game, try to beat your high score.
Designed for the BlackBerry® Storm, you control your ship with the accelerometer and can play in portrait view or landscape view. Four options for firing to increase usability: Click Screen, Right Convenience Key, Left Convenience Key, and Send Key.

QOTD: Negative advertising?
Does the recent spate of negative advertising in the smartphone world sway you one way or another, or do you know too much to be affected? Also, do you think it works in selling more units to new smartphone users?
Forget the OS. It’s all about the form factor, or a bit of both.
I have a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and an HTC HD2 sat on my desk at the moment and the two devices could not be farther apart in terms of form factor and the operating systems they run. One is big with a huge screen and a super smart interface whereas the other is small with a hardware keyboard and a more simplistic way of working- I am sure you can work out which is which.
The strange part about these two devices is that the operating systems mean very little to me in terms of which I would choose as my main smartphone. It is all about the form factor for me and the BlackBerry is exactly what I need to get through a day. The keyboard and battery life are all important, but I have to give a nod to the OS which is super quick and perfect for the quick entry of calendar entries and sending out emails and messenger messages in the blink of eye. They are quick mainly because of the keyboard and optical trackpad and so it comes back to the form factor again.
I can dial numbers one-handed and do almost everything else one-handed on the Bold, and in my experience the HS2 is somewhat of a two-handed user experience. I am not criticising the HD2 because the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages and these are personal preference for me, but no matter how I look at it the form factor is all important. This is probably why I do not like the iPhone as a phone and it has never felt natural in the hand or next to my ear.
Now, if the HD2 ran BlackBerry and the Bold ran Windows Mobile neither device would work at all and so the conclusion must come that the OS married to the right form factor is what makes the best device. Sadly for me the front facing hardware keyboard will always win out for me and I refuse to jump on the big screened smartphone bandwagon, no matter how good the devices are.

The multi-tasking Pre-like iPhone
Jailbreaking an iPhone is not something many want to try, but Multifl0w may offer enough incentive to make you have a go. Look at the video below which shows what it can do- seriously clever stuff!

The Curve continues to stay in front
The Curve 8300 series is still the number one selling smartphone in the US according NDP Group- “Nov. 23 (Bloomberg) — Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry Curve 8300 was the top consumer smart phone in the U.S. in the third quarter as price cuts drove up sales, according to research firm NPD Group Inc.
Apple Inc.’s iPhone 3GS and 3G models took second and third place, according to an e-mailed statement from the Port Washington, New York-based researcher today. Waterloo, Ontario- based RIM’s BlackBerry Tour and Storm rounded out the top five.
RIM and Apple have cut phone prices this year, leading to a decline in average prices, NPD said. The Curve supplanted the iPhone 3G during the quarter amid buy-one-get-one-free BlackBerry promotions. Verizon Wireless customers can get two Curves in the 8300 lineup for $49.99. The iPhone 3G costs $99 with an AT&T Inc. contract.
The average purchase price for mobile phones in the U.S. fell to $85 from $88 a year ago, NPD said. Smart phones made up 28 percent of all handsets sold.
Global shipments of smart phones, which allow users to surf the Web and compose e-mail messages, climbed 4.2 percent to 43.3 million in the third quarter from a year earlier, according to IDC, a research firm in Framingham, Massachusetts.
RIM rose 28 cents to $60 at 4 p.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The stock has gained 48 percent this year. Cupertino, California-based Apple, which has more than doubled this year, climbed $5.96 to $205.88.
RIM’s co-Chief Executive Officer Jim Balsillie also is benefiting from cheaper service plans for BlackBerry phones, and has said prepaid plans may boost growth in emerging markets…”

The HD2 is tiny!
If you thought the HTC HD2 was big, check out this new tablet phone from C-motech. It has a 7″ screen and is running Windows Mobile 6.5 on the Snapdragon platform.
More at Windows Phone thoughts- “No, I’m not talking about the Touch HD2. C-motech, a Korean company, showed off a prototype of a 7″ tablet running WM6.5 on the same Snapdragon platform. Details are sparse, but it supposedly has every wireless option known to man (bar CDMA), 2 USB slots, and a WVGA resistive touch screen. I’d expect pretty long battery life even driving that big screen, but try fitting this baby into your pocket! Manbag, anyone? Admittedly, this is more a candidate for the netbook/UMPC space, which makes the inclusion of cellular capability a plus point…”
