QOTD: ToDo or Calendar?
Do you use a ToDo program or a calendar to input most of your tasks/events on your smartphone? I still use the calendar all of the time and never did manage to get to grip with ToDo apps.

You won’t find me straining my plums in the kitchen
At the end of this year Terry Wogan will be stepping down from his morning radio show. If you don’t know who he is check out this link. He has led the morning radio slot, on and off, since 1972 and is considered by many in the UK to be a national treasure. My morning drives to work are always accompanied by Terry chatting in the background and despite his advanced years he still makes me laugh every day. One quote I remember was when a listener asked him if he was good at cooking and he duly announced that “You will never find me straining my plums in the kitchen!” So, what does this have to do with smartphones? Bear with me on this.
The way in which Terry (Sir Terence to us mere mortals) delivers the news and commands two hours of radio broadcasting every day is second to none; he is effortless in his delivery and appeals to people of all ages with his wit, intelligence and opinions which are sometimes not overly popular. It is all about the delivery- a mixture of broad Irish married to an eloquence you could never reproduce digitally. It is of course possible to be eloquent in printed words as many authors, poets and commentators have shown, but the information we receive on a daily basis is so varied and diluted that it is hard to see past the words.
We live in a world of RSS feeds, websites and news channels and have so much access to information that the need to ‘get it out there’ quickly is often more important that the need to make it worth being there in the first place. The lack of character on the internet is wholly apparent because anyone can have an opinion not worth reading, like me:), and it can be delivered immediately over the magic of wireless communications. I read a lot of information during the day and little of it reaches the credibility or class you would find in a newspaper or on a radio show like Mr Wogan’s.
There is still a lot of quality writing on the internet and in theory we have better access to this quality than ever before, but I still feel like the personality gets lost somewhere along the way. Just as I will be saddened by the loss of Terry’s voice every morning on the way to work.

HTC HD2 Camera Problem – Response from HTC
From Gavin- “If you have been reading the various techno sites like engadgetmobile, pocketnow, xda dev leo threads , the HD2 has a problem whereby if you take a pic against a white wall you get a pinkish blob in the middle. Pic attached. Below is HTC’s response to me-
Dear Gavin. Thank you for your enquiry about HD2. We are aware of the issue but it’s not a common fault with this device. It has been determined that this is not a hardware fault but a software issue and there should be a hotfix to be released soon to resolve it. Please monitor our website for the hotfix release If these steps have not helped, please let me know by responding using the link provided and I will be happy to check again for you. Best regards, Customer support team HTC Corp. Global Service Division http://www.htc.com/europe/CA_Hotline.aspx.”

Palm Pixi First Impressions from Another Perspective
Palm Pixi First Impressions from Another Perspective is new at Pre Central and takes some time to look at how it can be used for specific tasks, whilst maybe missing some of the issues with this device…
“The reviewers have been weighing in on the Palm Pixi over the last couple of weeks. Most complain about the Pixi’s speed (due to its slower processor). Others rip on it because there’s no WiFi. The screen size and resolution was bothersome too. I found that what I needed to do is take a step back and put myself into the mind of the Palm Pixi’s target audience.
The Pixi isn’t a smartphone for power users or gadget aficionados. That’s clear. In fact it seems like the Pixi IS supposed to be targeted to…”
Spotify for Nokia and more
Spotify is now available for Symbian and should give a boost to both the product and Symbian as a platform- “Today we’re delighted to announce the launch of Spotify for Symbian. Symbian is the operating system used by a number of smartphones including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung.
Today’s release means that Spotify Mobile is now available on millions more phones, such as the Nokia 6220 Classic, E71 and 5800 XpressMusic models. The application will also run on some of the more popular Sony Ericsson and Samsung smartphones, such as the Samsung GT-I8910 Omnia HD and Sony Ericsson Satio. Symbian is our third launch for Spotify Mobile, along with previously released iPhone and Android versions.
So how do you find out if your phone can run Spotify? Visit m.spotify.com from your mobile browser and find out if your phone is supported. Alternatively, enter your phone number in the Spotify Mobile page. We’ll send you instructions via SMS on how to get started with Spotify Mobile.
We also list all supported devices on our Symbian page, so if you’re looking to buy a new phone and want to know which ones we support you can find them there.
We hope everyone enjoys this early Christmas present!”

Does Palm want to fail?
Murray over at Palm-Mac has been talking about his Palm Pre webOS 1.3.1 upgrade and it hasn’t gone well- “I then headed off to work with the thought of having all those new apps to download when I got back and try and what the heck, probably even splash out on a few. Cue Family Fortunes “that’s not in the top 6 answers” buzzer noise…even worse, the amount of available apps in the App Catalogue has in fact reduced, not marginally as in 345 down to 329 but rather down to 67. Yes, 67…less than a quarter of what was available this time last night. Where in the name of France have all the apps gone and the supposed ability to actually buy some?
This is more than a tad disappointing, in fact it feels like a slap in the chops after waiting patiently for nearly a month to get what is, after all, a fairly basic feature of any smartphone. I’m sure the developers will be delighted to hear that a potential sales segment have been denied the ability to buy some software. I’ve been scouring through some threads on the PreCentral GSM Pre forums and everyone else seems to be in the same boat…rudderless. Some of the posters rightly point out it doesn’t look like Palm actually want this device to succeed. Just when I thought Palm had stopped shooting themselves in the foot they come along with this one…”
Apple responds to Verizon ads
engadget has posted a couple of new ads from Apple which appear to be having a little dig back at the recent Verizon ads, which were way over the top and completely pointless in my view. In these new ads Apple shows how many thing an iPhone can do while you are on a phone call and you would think it could multi-task by the way the ads are made. Apple should have taken the high ground over the Verizon ads and ignored them, but instead made ads which tose who are not familiar with smartphones will think means multi-tasking.

QOTD: Does your phone slow you down?
Do you find your smartphone to be a little too fiddly when you need to do something in a hurry? I have tended to find most smartphones do not offer instant access to certain information for for quickly entering information apart from some on Palm OS and BlackBerry OS.
Do we try to do too much?
I was having a BB Messenger chat with a friend of mine last week and he mentioned how difficult it was to keep customer databases and sales and vehicle logs updated on his BlackBerry. When you consider this, they really are not the kind of tasks you would expect to undertake on a smartphone, and maybe more so on a BlackBerry. Having all of your updated information on a smartphone that is with you at all times is of course very useful, but we can find ourselves spending hours squeezing the information into a small space which makes the task of using this information more difficult.
I have gone the other way and tend to use the simple BlackBerry memo app for my needed information alongside the standard calendar and contacts. Ascendo Money and SlickTasks are my only third party additions and this still leaves me with a setup which works for all of my needs, and one which is ultimately very stable. My BlackBerry does not crash, is always responsive and on the busiest of days comes into its own when time is short.
In the past I have loaded up my smartphones with far too many third party apps, just because I can. I have tried to cover every conceivable part of my life with a phone and it doesn’t work. Pages and pages of icons that I rarely use only slow down the whole process and leave me with a clunky and confused experience which is not what the phone was designed for in the first place.
Do you use your smartphone for too much and have you ever tried to streamline your mobile needs?
247 Reader Interview: Justine Pratt
1/ What smartphone are you using at the moment and which ones have you owned in the past?
I’m using an iPhone 3G. I haven’t upgraded yet because we don’t qualify, but maybe I’ll hold out now until new hardware is announced?
It’s my first smartphone. I was a die hard Palm PDA fan. Liked graffiti better than a keyboard, so I had a T5 before my iPhone. I had an iPod Touch first, because I really didn’t see a personal need for the connectivity of a smartphone. I’ve completely changed my mind now–you really see what you can do with one, once you have one.
2/ Which smartphone is the best you have ever owned?
I’ve used a Treo before, but did not like the keyboard. I do really like my iPhone a lot. I use it for most everything.
3/ Which smartphone is the worst you have ever owned?
I had a test device–the Motorola Q, which was particularly difficult to use.
4/ Could you survive without your phone for a month? If not, why not?
I would be lost! It’s my connection to everything. I’ve grown more and more dependent on it than ever. Plus, it’s a great distraction for my kids when we are somewhere boring (like the doctor’s office, or at one of the other kid’s karate classes).
5/ How would you describe your smartphone usage, and do you consider yourself to be ‘addicted’?
I carry my iPhone around with me everywhere. I guess you could consider me addicted. It’s just a very useful tool for me–I use it for both business and personal.
6/ What does PDA-247 mean to you?
247 is a community that I enjoy being a part of. The news is great, but even better is the commentary–civil an intelligent discussion amongst those who are involved across multiple platforms and all over the world.

ActiveSync on a BlackBerry
The BlackBerry messaging system rightly comes in for criticism from those who are experienced with services such as MS Exchange. The lack of proper calendar and contacts synchronisation does not help, but help is available via NotifySync. It is far from cheap, but is a solution which at least offers the best of both worlds for people who loves their BlackBerry’s, but want the full ActiveSync experience as well.
“NotifySync™ by Notify Corp enables BlackBerry devices to synchronise full mail folders, contacts, appointments and tasks directly with Microsoft Exchange, Kerio, CommunigatePro or Zimbra mail servers using the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync protocol “Over the Air” without middleware servers required. (BIS, BES ,TCP or other form of Mobile Internet service required)
NotifySync™ provides secure wireless email and PIM synchronisation and Global Address Look Up capability.
The NotifySync™ BlackBerry client provides a new email box but uses the native BlackBerry Calendar, Contacts, and Task applications.”
