Should RIM buy Palm?

rtPre Central has run a new article entitled Round Table: Palm for sale? which brings up the subject of RIM buying Palm. That would be a good fit if you ask me and solve the issues each has.

“Welcome to Round Table, which is in fact not a table at all. Round Table is a continuing series on PreCentral where we pose a question to the staff and they provide their thoughts and insights. The question could be something simple like “what’s your favorite webOS app?” or something a bit more complicated, like “what do you want from the next Palm device?” Or maybe we’ll just chat about bagels, you never know. For this go around the table we have to address the on-and-off chatter about various companies being interested in buying up Palm, Inc.”

The Pre drops in price again

preAmazon is now selling the Sprint Palm Pre for only $79.99 with a new service plan and is waiving the standard activation fee of $36. It costs $449.99 without a service plan and is quickly becoming a bargain basement smartphone. Of course the service plan costs tend to be overlooked by the mainstream media, but the continual price drops could be seen as a cause for concern. With the Pixi at $24.99 and no activation charge also from Amazon these phones should be selling by the bucket load, but the lack of buckets is likely the reason for the price drops…

Xperia X10 will be $879. I’ll have 5 please…

x10The Wall Street Journal has quoted the price of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to be $879 at launch in Q1 2010. I am wondering how it can compete, but I guess the contract prices will be heavily subsidised.

“STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)–Sony Ericsson hopes that its coming Xperia X10 flagship mobile phone, its first based on Google Inc’s (GOOG) Android open-source operating system, will help the company return to profit after several loss-making quarters, but it won’t be available until after the end-year holiday season and faces stiff competition.

The new high-end smartphone, which will cost around 6,000 Swedish kronor ($879) in stores, will be available in the first quarter 2010 in a number of markets including Sweden, press spokesman Gustaf Brusewitz told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview Wednesday, adding that more phones in the same product family…”

Nokia N97 mini review: Hardware

n971Nokia N97 mini review: Hardware

Available from Clove for £412.85

Main features- 3.2″ tilting touch screen display, 8GB internal memory, 3.5mm audio jack, 5 megapixel camera, TV Out, 3G/HSPA, MicroSDHC card slot.

In the box- Nokia N97 mini mobile computer, Nokia Battery (BL-4D), Nokia High-Efficiency Charger (AC-10), Nokia Connectivity Cable (CA-101), Nokia Music Headset (WH-701), User Guide, Ovi Suite DVD 1.1

The original Nokia N97 wasn’t exactly large by smartphone standards, but with Nokia targeting a non smartphone audience it was seen by many as a bit of a brick. The main problem with the N97 at launch was the software which felt unfinished and there were many aspects that made it difficult for the user to get familiar with the phone. Nokia learnt from this and improved the software, and these improvements have been carried forward to the N97 mini. Everything is here that is in the original, and the only concession is that there is 8GB of memory onboard as opposed to 32MB on the N97. The inclusion of an expansion slot does mean that there will be enough memory options for almost every user though.

n972The packaging is very professional and you get the usual charger and sync cable plus, wait for it, a decent pair of headphones! This is the first set I have seen from Nokia which you will be happy to use for music playback and it’s great to see Nokia finally listen. However, for a phone which costs over £400 and which supports TV-out it would be nice to see a TV-out cable in the box. These cables are not overly expensive these days, but I am sure than many would appreciated seeing one included.

The phone itself is very slim and looks more like a Nokia 5800 than anything else when you first see it. It feels very solid and there is little indication that a slide-out keyboard is hidden beneath the screen. It is a touch on the weighty side at 150 grams, but it is a reassuring weight which is likely derived from the good quality materials that have been used. It is hard to explain how well this phone is built, but every aspect from the housing to the buttons gives an impression of superior quality and this is without doubt one of the best built phones I have ever used.

The buttons are as you would expect; lock key on the left, volume and camera keys on the right, on/off key on the top (also used for profile switching) alongside a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB sync charge port top left which is not the best position for it.

n973The keyboard slide mechanism is superb and flips the screen immediately. There is again a real sense of solidity even when it is open and the shallower screen again (than the original N97) works very well. The keyboard is a bone of contention for many and I totally understand why; the space bar is to the right, the return key is where you would expect the delete key to be and everything  feels somewhat misplaced. You do get used to it quite quickly, but it is a major shift away from the standard layout you may be used to on other phones, and is in my opinion an unnecessary shift because it adds little to the overall speed of typing. The keys are flush, but have just enough pronouncement and travel to provide a satisfactory typing experience and overall I would rate the keyboard as suitable for general typing, but a missed opportunity because we could have had so much better.

It is hard not to like the N97 mini from a hardware perspective and everything from the 3.5″ bright screen to the buttons make it feel top of the range. Nokia has done well on the hardware and so all you need to do now is come back tomorrow to see what the software is like.

An app for that, thousands of apps, apps don’t matter

g2I drove past a bus stop yesterday which has a big advertisment for the T-Mobile G2 Touch (Hero) and it proclaimed that there are 1000′s of apps for it as its main headline.

Apple of course do the same with its “There’s an app for that” tag line and this has worked well so far.

Compare that to this article yesterday in which Ray Ozzie from Microsoft tried to explain that mobile apps don’t matter. It seems that HTC get it, that Apple gets it, but that Microsoft either genuinely do not get it or it is trying to persuade people that they really do not matter.

The irony is that Windows Mobile has a huge body of quality mobile apps and Microsoft just hasn’t managed to make many people aware of that.

No WM6.5 update for Xperia X1

x1This news is going to seriously annoy Xperia X1 users. There will be no official Windows Mobile 6.5 update for the Xperia X1. More at crave.

I guess this new is dissapointing rather than bad because the update is hardly going to change the device completely. However, it would be nice to see SE support its loyal customers like other manufacturers have. crave has a link to a 6.5 ROM as well if you are brave enough.

Palm’s Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach interviewed

pixiPalm’s Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach has been interviewed by Pre 101. I couldn’t link to the site when I tried so check out Pre Central for some of the details.

“Over at Pre 101 the recently interviewed a familiar character on the webOS scene: Palm’s Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach. We got a bit of history on Von Rospach (prior to working with Palm he had worked with Sun Microsystems, Apple, Strongmail, and Laszlo Systems) and an explanation as to why his Tweets are almost always about birds.

But we know what you all find to be the interesting stuff: what he does at Palm. Chuq described his job as managing the developer portal and forums, communicating information from Palm to the developer community, and working with developers and media to address problems. Essentially, he serves as the nexus of Palm’s developer community, linking together Palm, the developers, and the media…”

Symbian to be replaced by 2012

maemoReports are coming in that Symbian is to be replaced by 2012 with Maemo Linux for high-end Nokia smartphones. Clove has all of the details, but I guess this is not a big surprise to many people. It does however cast a shadow over current sales in a time when Nokias market share is already dropping.

“All high-end N series multimedia devices will be running the Linux OS by then. Rubbing salt in the wounds of longtime Epoc developers, it disclosed the news to a meetup of Maemo enthusiasts – Ben Smith reports at The Really Mobile Project blog. X series and E series devices will continue to run Symbian OS – at least for the time being.

It isn’t such a surprise. At NokiaWorld in September, Nokia confirmed in public and in private that Maemo was the bedrock for future high-end devices, with Symbian downgraded to a “workhorse” smartphone OS for the midrange. Only a fortnight earlier, Nokia had strenuously denied the strategy. So much for honest community relations.”
