QOTD: ToDo or Calendar?

qotd27Do you use a ToDo program or a calendar to input most of your tasks/events on your smartphone? I still use the calendar all of the time and never did manage to get to grip with ToDo apps.

I use both but primarily use the calendar for important stuff. For trivial things that don’t warrant a calendar entry, I put it into the Task app. Eg, I’d put appointments or things that have a deadline into the calendar. But if I’m reminded of something that I should probably look into later on (eg, a movie or something), I’ll put it in the task app with a reminder.

I’m pretty much like Shaun using my calendar for most things I need to remember. I haven’t yet found a to do or task manager on the iPhone that suits me or that offers the limited functionality I need that can’t be dome in the calendar.

I’m not a “power” list / task person by a long way and I don’t need a GTD approach.

I’ve got Appigo’s ToDo on the phone but can’t remember the last time I used it.

I use both but rely heavily on a decent ToDo app – currently using ToDoist online & on the iPod Touch (via an app called Doings).

If an item can be scheduled easily, or if it needs an alarm, it goes into the calendar. If it isn’t date-related (or not date-related yet) then it goes into ToDoist, along with any notes or sub-tasks that might be associated with it.

ToDoist is really helpful in being as flexible as you need it to be and yet thoroughly uncluttered. Worth a gander in my opinion.

I use my calendar for everything, including tasks. But I only use it for things I think I might forget, which are important and require an alarm, or which are further in the future. If I have too much there it becomes difficult to distinguish the essential things from the crap. I use appointments for things which have a definite beginning and end, and reminders for things which have a time, but no real end time. Handy Calendar does a great job of combining these options, giving me a simple overview and data entry is super quick and easy.

I forgot to say that I don’t like having my todos and appointments in separate apps, because I just want to look at my day and see what I have to do. I don’t use todos to make lists and such things, since I don’t really use them, those I keep in my head.

I admit sometimes I just don’t know if a determined item is a Calendar thing or a ToDo. But I’ve always used alot the Calendar/ToDo in the Palm. The fantastic thing I like is the ability to have all that archived in my computer. I can trace all my events ever since 2000!

I use the Calendar/ToDo in my smartphone for trivial matters – SPB Mobile Shell – and the Clié Organizer (great!) for the heavy PIM. As you know you can handwrite inthe Clié Organizer or stick icons, notes, etc… in addition you can simultaneously see the callendar entries and ToDo, or choose multimedia contents, expand calendar entries. – Why didn’t someone developed this idea further???

… BTW… can someone tell me if there’s a way to purge and archive calendar and tasks entries in the WinMob 6.1 system? I just don’t like all those entries in the calendar and I never found a delete to archive option. Maybe a 3rd party application?

I use the calendar for, events, appointments and items that absolutely MUST be done on a particular day; I also schedule blocks of time to work on particular projects.

However, I use a to do list for all the nitty gritty details, project plans, tasks and chores.

To me, they are two different things. The calendar is there to provide a bird’s-eye overview of your plans for the day or week; but the to do list is where you get stuff done, checking off completed items and pencilling in next steps.

I have an iPhone and use GalenGoo for a calendar and FocusPad as a todo list. I’ve tried many of the calendar and todo apps for the iPhone but none of them seem close to DateBK6 and CanDo on the Palm.

Having said that, I think CalenGoo is probably the best option for Google Calendar syncing and I like FocusPad as it’s really simple. At the moment, I keep todos with a due date in FocusPad and make them red. If required, I’ll also created an all day appointment in CalenGoo to remind me. A future release of CalenGoo will support dated todos.
