QOTD: What do you call your smartphone?

21 November 2009 by Shaun 8 Comments

qotd27From Rui. I was reading yesterday the smartphone QOTD and it struck me a thought that could be used for a QOTD, because sometimes I do have doubts about what to say:

About the term “smartphone” – I will suppose almost all of us have a smartphone, right? So, when you are having a conversation and you need to refer your device to someone else what term exactly do you use? “My… smartphone?, Phone?, Mobile phone?, iPhone?, HTC?, Blackberry? Nokia? And if you use terms like iPhone or HTC or Blackberry to refer to your “smartphone”, don’t you feel a bit of a “snob” or that it gives you more “status”?:)

I just use the term “phone”. I don’t feel the need to brag about the brand or type. Plus there’s less explaining to do.

I say BlackBerry because I figure most folks know what that is or else handheld usually. I may also just say calendar if I’m adding an event or address book if I’m adding a contact.

I was at a work industry dinner last night (with speeches lasting 1 hours 15 mins, shocking!! ) and had to show some pictures of where I live.

I took at my HTC HD2 and everyone wanted to know what it was. I said its a phone :) but it does a lot more. Everyone was fascinated. Could have sold 5 on the spot.

My family call it my Palm, even though I haven’t had a Palm for years. I call it my phone (bizarre !) or my diary if I’m asked to look up my availability, book an appointment etc.
