QOTD: What do you miss?

2 November 2009 by Shaun 8 Comments

qotd25Of the smartphones and PDAs you have upgraded from in the past which one do you still miss occasionally? I must say that the Psion 3c and 5mx still haunt me from time to time and I want that feeling back again.

vboelema summed up my thoughts with a comment on 247 last week- “My Psion in fact my first computer!  I did EVERYTHING on it.  It took quite some time for me to be able to be able to use my Palm to that degree, and in many ways I never did again.”

The only advantage of the Psion over the Palm was the screen real-estate, DateBk or Contacts5 are fare more superior than any EPOC PIM. But that is something Psion fans wont acknowledge, ever. Since they are so small sighted in this area..

What I miss? A ‘Tap-Counter’: Palm had one employee only to count how many taps it would take the user to get things done. More than 3 and the UI had to be redesigned.
A Symbian phone exceeds this easily, touch or no touch. The 1st touch Blackberry as well. The so-called ‘Zen of Palm’ ( Inever heard that saying for a PSION device) is based on exact this employee.
I have turned back from a N97 / E71 to a T68i coupled with a Sony Clié. Still excels better than todays devices- sadly!

Nonsense. DateBk was clunky and hard to use and the Psion set up was simple and efficient.

“The only advantage of the Psion over the Palm was the screen real-estate”

Proper keyboards, adding info from each PIM app to all other PIM apps, long battery lives measured in weeks, no crashing………..

I miss little from my Sony TH55 except perhaps datebk6.
Everything else I did on the Th55 I now do on the iphone more easily and better than before (except datebk!)

I miss my CLIE NX80 – the PIM functions were so much better than my iPhone’s.

In the end I found the Psion to big to carry around as a pda, it was really more of a computer to me. But system as a whole was so well integrated, it really worked as ONE. Palm was different bits put together. E.g. In the agenda you could add docs, drawings, voice notes, spreadsheets etc. Which were all part of the whole, but could be use in conjunction with other programmes.

I really like my E71. But I miss having the nice Psion 5mx keyboard and being able to zoom in and out in any part of the OS, but I like the fact that I can carry my E71 in my pocket! I also liked my Palm TX screen, Snappermail and watching films on it.

I miss my Treo 650 – great keyboard, great battery life and so easy to navigate. Such a shame it was only 2.5G and dropped calls if it was accessing the internet!
