What do you want to buy in the next three months? Android and BlackBerry by the looks of it…

comscoreComscore’s latest survey details a small, but significant change in the purchasing aspirations of US mobile purchaser. The iPhone is down by 1% which is a small drop, but surely we would expect it to be moving upwards, the BlackBerry Pearl is top (with all BlackBerry’s reaching over 50%) and Android phones are starting to have an impact. The Palm Pre is at 2%…

“Google’s Android platform has continued to gain awareness among U.S. consumers. In August 2009, just 22 percent of mobile users had heard of the Android, while in November 2009 this figure had reached 37 percent, largely prompted by the Verizon Droid advertising campaign launched in the fall. The comScore study found that not only is general awareness increasing about Android, but intent to purchase an Android-supported device is also increasing among mobile phone users.

When mobile users were asked in November which phone they planned to buy in the next three months, 17 percent of respondents in the market for a new smartphone said they planned to purchase an Android-supported device, with 8 percent of those planning to purchase a Verizon Droid, compared to 20 percent of respondents who said they planned to purchase an iPhone during that same time period. In comparison, when survey respondents answered this same question in August 2009, only 7 percent indicated an intent to purchase either the T-Mobile G1 or the T-Mobile MyTouch — which were the only Android-supported phones available at the time — while 21 percent of respondents planned to purchase an iPhone in the next three months.

Although Android’s share of the smartphone market is relatively small, it has quickly doubled in the past year to 3.5 percent in October 2009. Understanding the mobile media behavior of Android users highlights why operators and media companies might embrace the platform and fuel its growth. An analysis of mobile media consumption on smartphones revealed that users of both Apple and Android-supported devices were more likely to engage with mobile media than an average smartphone user. Users of the Apple iPhone were most likely to consume mobile media, with 94 percent of users doing so in September 2009, while 92 percent of Android device users, predominantly T-Mobile G1 users, engaged in mobile media activities, 12 percentage points higher than an average smartphone user.

Apple and Android users were equally likely to engage with news via their browser and nearly identical in their mobile application engagement. Email was the only major activity in which iPhone users (87 percent) were far more likely to participate than Android users (63 percent). Overall, these data suggest that Android users will behave more like iPhone users than other smartphone users.”

QOTD: Apps?

Is the multiple use smartphone just a myth?

shaunSmartphones are designed to undertake a variety of tasks from personal information management to music and video playback to taking photographs, but I do wonder how many people actually use, or need, all of these functions?

When I buy a smartphone I ‘need’ good battery life, top class PIM, adequate voice quality and not a lot else. I ‘want’ a good camera, GPS, HSDPA, games, customisation, lots of apps and so the list goes on. The difference between want and need is that the needed features will get used every day, but the desired features are ones that you will only dip into now and again.

It is all too easy to continually search in vain for the perfect smartphone, but we know by now that nothing is perfect and also that our definition of perfect is a device which does lots and lots of things which we ultimately won’t use.

The same thought process causes us to see a third party software base of 100,000 apps (iPhone) as a huge advantage and a software base of less than 1,000 (webOS) as a problem. The fact that 99% of us will only use 5 or 6 apps regularly doesn’t even figure in our thought process. I have purchased over 100 apps for my iPhone and use 2 of them on a regular basis- it’s an alarming waste of money and is the best example of how we perceive more as good and completely forget that the basics are by far the most important aspect of any smartphone.

I still want my smartphone to do multiple things, but when I really need something doing properly it is often the case that a dedicated piece of equipment is best equipped for the task i.e. digital camera, GPS system etc.

RIM Email Delays Again

boldSome North American BlackBerry users experienced delays in receiving email yesterday. No mention of us in the UK, but I had no emails for 3 hours yesterday and they were sat waiting on my MS Exchange account. Hmmm…

From WSJ- “Research In Motion Ltd. said Thursday some of its customers in North America are experiencing delays receiving emails on their BlackBerry devices.

In a statement, the smart-phone maker said customers “may be currently experiencing delays receiving email” but phone services and PIN-to-PIN messaging are not affected. The company apologized for any inconvenience and said technical teams are working to resolve the problem, but it didn’t say what caused the problem or when a resolution is expected.

The Toronto Star earlier reported that some BlackBerry customers in North America have been without email service since at least 3:15 a.m. The newspaper said one Canadian carrier, Rogers Communications, indicated that the outage affected consumers using RIM’s BlackBerry Internet Service but didn’t affect corporate customers whose a BlackBerry Enterprise Service.

Several U.S. carriers confirmed that their consumer customers were affected by the outage. A spokeswoman for Sprint Nextel Corp., said the outage started at 3 a.m. EST and only impacted email service to subscribers that use RIM’s BlackBerry Internet Service. She said RIM indicated the problem began when something went awry during a maintenance check of its system. She said RIM indicated it expected the issue to be resolved shortly.”

RIM rubs salt into Palm’s wounds

rimRIM has also announced its third quarter results today and what a contrast it makes to Palm. Again, the bits in bold are most important. WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Dec. 17, 2009) – Research In Motion Limited (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM), a world leader in the mobile communications market, today reported third quarter results for the three months ended November 28, 2009 (all figures in U.S. dollars and U.S. GAAP, except where indicated).

Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2010 was $3.92 billion, up 11% from $3.53 billion in the previous quarter and up 41% from $2.78 billion in the same quarter of last year. The revenue breakdown for the quarter was approximately 82% for devices, 14% for service, 2% for software and 2% for other revenue. During the quarter, RIM shipped approximately 10.1 million devices, including its 75 millionth BlackBerry smartphone.

Approximately 4.4 million net new BlackBerry(R) subscriber accounts were added in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base was approximately 36 million.

“We are pleased to report record shipments of more than 10 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter with higher than expected revenue, earnings and subscriber growth,” said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America.”

Net income for the quarter was $628.4 million, or $1.10 per share diluted, compared with net income of $475.6 million, or $0.83 per share diluted, in the prior quarter and net income of $396.3 million, or $0.69 per share diluted, in the same quarter last year. The earnings per share in the quarter was not impacted by repurchases under RIM’s Common Share Repurchase program.

Revenue for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 ending February 27, 2010 is expected to be in the range of $4.2-$4.4 billion. Gross margin for Q4 is expected to be approximately 43.5%. Net subscriber account additions in the fourth quarter are expected to be in the range of 4.4-4.7 million. Earnings per share for the fourth quarter are expected to be in the range of $1.23-$1.31 per share diluted. This reflects a positive impact of approximately $0.03 per share related to the cancellation of 12.3 million shares repurchased under RIM’s share repurchase program during the third quarter.

The total of cash, cash equivalents, short-term and long-term investments was $2.41 billion as at November 28, 2009, compared to $2.50 billion at the end of the previous quarter, a decrease of $90 million over the prior quarter. Cash flow from operations in Q3 was approximately $1.07 billion. Uses of cash in the quarter included capital expenditures of approximately $196 million, intangible asset purchases of approximately $143 million and a common share repurchase pursuant to the share repurchase program of $775 million.

Palm Reports Q2 FY 2010 Results

palmHere follows a long financial statement from Palm- the bits in bold are most important. SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec 17, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ:PALM) today reported that total revenues in the second quarter of fiscal year 2010, ended Nov. 27, 2009, were $78.1 million. Gross profit was $5.5 million, and gross margin was 7.0 percent. These results include the effects of subscription accounting applied to Palm(R) webOS(TM) products as required by GAAP.(1) In accordance with this methodology, revenues and direct cost of revenues for Palm webOS products (currently Palm Pre(TM) and Palm Pixi(TM) smartphones) are deferred and recognized over the products’ estimated economic lives.

To facilitate comparisons to Palm’s historical results, Palm has included non-GAAP adjusted measures, which exclude the impact of subscription accounting, stock-based compensation and other items detailed later in this release. The company believes this information will help investors better evaluate its current period performance and trends in its business.

Non-GAAP Adjusted Revenues in the second quarter totaled $302.0 million, non-GAAP Adjusted Gross Profit was $77.3 million and non-GAAP Adjusted Gross Margin was 25.6 percent.

“We are continuing to execute strongly against our long-term strategy with the delivery of Palm Pixi, the new carrier launches completed this quarter, and the upcoming opening of Palm’s full developer program,” said Jon Rubinstein, Palm’s chairman and chief executive officer. “We’re still in the early stages of a long race, and we’re energized by the opportunity to compete in this exciting market. We remain confident that Palm’s innovative product design capabilities, integrated cloud services and the differentiated and delightful Palm webOS experience will provide the foundation for our sustained success.”

The company shipped a total of 783,000 smartphone units during the quarter, representing a 5 percent decrease from the first quarter of fiscal year 2010 and a year-over-year increase of 41 percent compared to the second quarter of fiscal year 2009. Smartphone sell-through for the second quarter was 573,000 units, down 29 percent from the first quarter of fiscal year 2010 and down 4 percent year-over-year.

On a GAAP basis, net loss applicable to common stockholders for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 was $(85.4) million, or $(0.54) per diluted common share. This compares to a net loss applicable to common stockholders for the second quarter of fiscal year 2009 of $(508.6) million or $(4.64) per diluted common share. The company’s second quarter of fiscal year 2009 results included a non-cash charge with a net impact of $396.7 million to the tax provision pertaining to the increase of the valuation allowance for the Company’s U.S. deferred tax assets.

The company’s net loss applicable to common stockholders on a GAAP basis reflects accounting guidance, effective in the first quarter of fiscal year 2010, which requires the anti-dilutive provisions of Palm’s series C preferred shares and related warrants to be treated as derivatives for financial reporting purposes. The fair value of the derivatives were estimated as of the first day of fiscal year 2010 and are marked to market on a quarterly basis, with any change in value reflected in the company’s financial results for the period. The series C derivatives balance was $178.7 million at the end of the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 compared to $235.0 million at the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2010. This reduction in fair value resulted in a $56.3 million non-cash gain on series C derivatives and was reflected in the company’s second quarter GAAP financial results. With regard to the series C derivatives, any future increases in Palm’s stock price from period to period will be reflected as a non-cash loss on these derivatives in the company’s financial results, and any future decreases will be reflected as a non-cash gain in the company’s financial results. Non-GAAP Net Loss for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 was $(59.6) million, or $(0.37) per diluted share. This compares to a non-GAAP Net Loss for the second quarter of fiscal year 2009 of $(80.2) million, or $(0.73) per diluted share.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 totaled $(70.1) million. EBITDA, adjusted to exclude the impact of subscription accounting, stock-based compensation, net other income (expense), restructuring charges and a gain on series C derivatives, or Adjusted EBITDA, totaled $(48.3) million. The company’s cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments balance was $590.0 million at the end of the second quarter of fiscal year 2010. This includes net proceeds of approximately $360 million from the company’s public equity offering, which closed on Sept. 23, 2009. Cash from operations for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 was $16.7 million.

Palm may periodically provide new software features free of charge to customers of its Palm webOS products and currently recognizes Palm webOS product revenues and related standard cost of revenues on a subscription basis based on the applicable product’s estimated economic life, which is currently 24 months. The company records deferred revenues and deferred cost of revenues on its balance sheet, and amortizes them into earnings on a straight-line basis over the estimated economic product life.
