QOTD: One change?
Is there a smartphone you would move to if it had one hardware or OS change? I would probably move to an iPhone if it had a hardware keyboard.

What do you want your smartphone to do next?
On a long drive with my boss this week we fell into a fascinating conversation about what we would like our smartphones to do in the future. No honestly, it was slightly interesting…
We didn’t discuss over the top advances like 3D videos and the like, but seemed to want the practical things that make life a little easier. Here is a list of what we came up with and it would be interesting to see what you want (need) in your next smartphone-
Conference calls: to be able to add a conference call to my agenda automatically when an invite received and have my smartphone prompt me at the right time to join the call. I would click ‘yes’ and then it would dial the number, insert the PIN code and play my pre-recorded announcement with no involvement from myself.
Voicemail: Visual voicemail is good, but I would like my smartphone to text me the words from a voicemail message immediately with no involvement from people translating the message and with no costs to use such a service.
Noise: Noise reduction included as standard on all smartphones, not just Bluetooth headsets.
Transferring data: the ability to easily transfer data between the main PIM apps; contacts, agenda, tasks, email etc. This worked well on Psions and the Clie TH55, but is not directly supported well on any platform currently.
Multiple email: Work and personal emails on one device would be nice- two MS Exchange accounts or BIS and BES on a BlackBerry.
Dual SIM: good battery life and a usable solution for people who need more than one number in the same phone.
Ridge Racer Accelerated for iPhone: race away from this one
Ridge Racer Accelerated has been released for the iPhone and could be used as an argument that standalone consoles like the PSP are much better. However, you could say that it is just a very poor piece of programming which is not ready for release yet.
Extra tracks can be bought from within the game and I am struggling to find one aspect of this version that I like.

Super Star Soldier for BlackBerry
Super Star Soldier for BlackBerry is a new game available for $8.99 which attempts to bring a superior arcade experience to the platform. I’m not convinced that it is great, but it is certainly good fun if you like the retro gaming style- “A vertically scrolling sci-fi-’em-up, Super Star Soldier is now available for BlackBerry. BlackBerry gamers will be able to play classic TurboGrafx-16 Game on BlackBerry!!
Super Star Soldier is a scrolling shooter videogame released in 1990 for the TurboGrafx-16 system. It is the sequel to Star Soldier, and part of a vertical-scrolling shooter series. Many people believed Super Star Soldier’s graphics were the best of any Turbo Chip game.
But what Super Star Soldier ultimately became known for is was for its sheer intense gameplay. The action in Super Star Soldier was much faster and, consequently, way more challenging than most other shooters released on the TurboGrafx. Thethe game called out to all the hardcore shooter pros, and became a cult hit in Japan, where they staged competitions with some of the best players to see who could rack up the highest scores, and who had the best patterns for beating the game.
Now, on BlackBerry, you can re-discover what made Super Star Soldier a cult favorite.
The game includes variety of weapons including flame throwers, electricity, spread guns and heat-seeking missiles. It consists of five levels.”

The Truth About The Ovi Store
The Truth About The Ovi Store is a new article at Symbian Guru which attempts to shed some light on how well it is doing and what it really stands for- “Since Nokia launched its Ovi Store earlier this year, we, along with most everyone else, have taken our share of pot-shots against it. When the store launched, it was pretty easy, as the store’s search function was busted, users couldn’t re-download purchases, and there were several other problems that plagued the store.”

Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Device Sales on Pace for Flat Growth in 2009
Flat growth is normally a negative, but in the current climate it is actually quite impressive. Egham, UK, December 15, 2009 – Stronger than expected sales in Western Europe and an acceleration in the grey market in the third quarter of this year will drive worldwide mobile device sales to end users to 1.214 billion units, a 0.67 per cent decline from 2008, according to the latest outlook by Gartner, Inc. In September, Gartner had forecast sales to decline 3.7 per cent in 2009. Gartner now predicts sales in 2010 will show a 9 per cent increase from 2009.
“Although the grey market or ‘white label’ is not a new phenomenon and has been generated by Chinese device manufacturers who do not have a licence to sell and manufacture devices without a valid international mobile equipment identity (IMEI), today grey-market sales are no longer limited to China,” said Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner. “All manufacturers will have to compete with grey-market players as they expand into emerging markets in Asia/Pacific, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America and bring a lower weighted average selling price (ASP). The grey market will affect Nokia’s market share the most.”
In 2009, overall market economic conditions impacted disposable income and extended replacement cycles in mature markets from 12 to 18 months. Gartner expects replacement cycles globally to return to normal within two years, with the introduction of more aggressively priced smartphones and shorter contracts. Gartner also expects second-hand sales in emerging markets and SIM-only sales globally to stabilise in 2010 and to start decreasing from 2011 as consumers feel less macro-economic pressure…” The full report is available from Gartner (registration needed).

You can now pause, play, and move to the next track or previous track even when FlipSide is in the background by using the audio playback keys on OS 5 devices. Beyond those very nice new features, a very exciting new development is its support for Bluetooth AVRCP and A2DP, which means you can also play it through and control it directly from your Bluetooth enabled Car Stereo, speakerphone (like the excellent Jabra CRUISER) or stereo headsets! MKM Partners has upgraded Palm’s stock to ‘Buy’ and is targetting a $20 share price. Nice to see things gong the other way for once. From MSN Money- “Palm upgraded to Buy at MKM Partners; tgt raised to $20 MKM Partners upgrades PALM to Buy from Neutral and raises their tgt to $20 from $11 because they believe that many of the risks they saw to the stock have subsided. First, the firm is much more confident about Palm’s chances to sell through Verizon and believe a Verizon relationship would mitigate the uncertainty of an AT&T relationship.”
HTC has released a couple of updates for the HD2 and Touch2. The HD2 update is for the reported SMS issues involving the lack of a proper notification for new messages. The Touch2 weather hotfix will allow you to see what the weather is like wherever you are at any time. Or you could just open your eyes…
Clove now has the Nokia E72 in stock for £327.75. It is the genuine UK version and surely the best Symbian device available today? “The Nokia E Series is without doubt one of the best mobile devices available today. The E71 was amongst one of the most popular. So what would you end up with if you improved the E71? The E72.
The Nokia E72 is the latest device from Nokia that offers un-complicated and simple mobile connectivity and communication. Using the Symbian operating system the most common functions and activities and tasks are easy to complete. The E72 retains the Nokia E71 form factor and styling.”
